Sunvisor upgrade for New age Imprezas
I don't really check the dress up and style forum as I am into autocross and track days but I appreciate some functional upgrades for style. I like the interior of the WRX for the most part but the sunvisors had to go so in my search for better sunvisors I went straight to my wifes Ford Focus. The Focus sunvisors are almost the exact same size and shape of the WRX and I assume the RS but I have no idea as far as the old body style goes. These sunvisors are nicer quality and are finished in a carpet like material that is almost a perfect match for color and texture of the headliner. They have a much smaller airbag warning label and the mirror is covered with a plastic cover that flips up and stays up ( so it doesn't block more view ) They also both have a material strip for placing papers for easy access similar to the clear plastic one on the drivers side visor on the stock sunvisor.
Now for the install.
Remove both the stock sunvisors from the Impreza and from a Focus( unless you order them new from Ford ) by unscrewing 2 screws on each side mount.
Then unscrew the single screw that holds the clip that secures the end of the visor to the headliner ( the clip that is near the rearview mirror on the headliner ) on both the Focus and Impreza
Next pull firmly the tube out of the visors on both the stock visors and the Focus visors so that you have just the visor flap with a hole in the end. The mount has a 4-5" tube attached which will pull out with a good pull and some twisting ( no tools needed )
Take the stock Impreza mount with tube and push it firmly into the hole on the Focus visor. (twisting while pushing inward helps )
Next take the stock Focus clip and using wirecutters clip off the tips that keep the clip aligned ( otherwise it will stick out from the headliner and can break when tightening the screw for the mount )
Now take the new sunvisor with stock mount and re attach it using the stock impreza screws. Then using the stock impreza screw attach the Focus clip in the original clips location.
Thats it!! You now have two new carpeted sunvisors with vanity mirrors covered by a nicer plastic cover and an easy access paper strip with smaller airbag warning labels. This can be done in about 20 mins ( it took me 45 mins doing it the first time trying to figure it out and having to re fit my visors in my wifes Focus ) The only tools I used were a pair of wirecutters and a crosstip screwdriver. I don't have pics or a digital camera but if you can check out a Focus next to your new age Impreza you can tell right away that its a nice improvement and easy to do. Any questions feel free to PM me for more info or ask here but I don't check back too much so be aware.

My Subie would feel violated. The airbag warnings couldn't be any smaller than mine (removed them)!

Interesting. I wonder how much these parts cost?

sounds good to me... nothing wrong w/ using a Focus visor .. geez y'all are too anal in here. The stockers are crap... at least the Focus ones are an upgrade. Mike.. any idea on how much/where to get?

I find it humorous that someone would take the time to "upgrade" (no offense) their sunvisors.
Granted, they're not crushed velour, but they have a mirror, and a handy plastic strap.
Flame away,
Ed

Rebellion I have no idea on cost but I am sure they can found in a scrap yard as I don't think they are hot items and will be cheaper than at the dealer.
If you like the stock sunvisors and don't think they are cheap junk then keep them. I posted this for those people that realize how chincy the stock ones are a quick and easy way to upgrade. This is the reason I don't post or visit this section very often since there are too many people here that only care about looks over function. I thought that if people would have something constructive to say or add that would make things cheaper or easier that they would post it but I didn't expect a bunch of closed minded people would post just to see their words on the net.

Good info - the stock visors are a irritant and I've long wanted a replacement.

As much as I dislike FORD, the rex does have some pretty cheap sunvisors.

do you thinkit would work on a 2001 impreza (the older model)
i've seen the interior of a new age impreza but never noticed how the sunvisor were.
does anyone know if it would be possible to do this on a 2001 impreza

west... I'd imagine this would work just as well for a 2001 RS

MikeWRX - do the Focus ones have a light or anything in the vanity mirror?
| nqwan | 10-31-2001 10:38 PM |
so how does your wife like her new visors? hehehe :p
| MikeWRX | 11-01-2001 01:27 AM |
If the 2001 and older impreza's have similar size and shape visors as the new age imprezas I think it should work fine but I don't have access to one to compare. My wife drives 1.8 miles to work so she doesn't really mind but I will be buying a set of stock focus visors anyways for her car just because she deserves it.

Did your Ford model visors get recalled yet?
:D

i think it's cool that he's provided a good alternative for those who hate the visors in the impreza. thanks man!

I'm with you all the way. My daily round trip commute is nearly 140 miles. Nice visors would be a blessing, so I've taken matters into my own hands. I have the leather and needles now and I'm going to try to sew covers for the stock cheapies this weekend. Your instructions will be very useful. Thanks.

I think some pictures would clear this right up. How much better do they look, assuming they look better!? Can't say I have had any problems with the way they look. I guess I just fail to see the advantage of a pair of Focus visors that almost match the headliner and don't offer any other benefits.

Pictures, although after looking at them I should have moved back a bit...
It is a nicer cloth, and they fit reasonably well into the depression in the headliner.

Slidewrx Thanks again for taking the pics and posting them. It was nice meeting you last night and I hope to see you at our meetings and get togethers in the future. The lighting magnifys the color difference as it is hardly noticable in the shadow of the headliner unless it is in direct light shining on it you can't really see the difference.

wow... thanks Mike & SlideWRX! i'm getting sick and tired of my flimsy sunvisor as well. Mike, i don't think you've answered whether or not the focus sun visors have lighting for the mirror?
regarding ford parts... bah! whats wrong with it? if the Cobra's engine fits my car i'll be the first inline to get it :D

Sorry no lights for the vanity mirrors. Also there are 3 trim codes listed but they are all the same from the visors and headliner standpoint. Make sure you get these using the part numbers I listed or from a junk yard as Ford is supposed to be switching to the cheaper style plastic type visors in the future on the Focus.

SlideWRX, could you take a picture of the visors flipped down into the useful position?
Could someone else take pictures of the stock visors in the down position?
It would be nice to see a side-by-side comparison.
