Swappimg gauge clusters?

I was thinking about putting an '05 STi cluster in my car.
a) can it be done, is it plug-n-play?
b) with the whole mileage thing, how does that work? My car has almost 70K, the STi only had about 30K. Is the mileage info. kept by the cars computer or inside the cluster?

1.) your can do an 05 but its not plug and play, an 04 sti cluster is a lot easier and is basically plug and play
2.) mileage is kept in your ecu and cluster. the mileage displayed is what is on the cluster so doing a swap will change the mileage to whats on the new cluster.

swapping out that horrible guage cluster is a great idea. Im assumig your doing it bc of the tach placement. If so you could get an sti guage or an aftermarket one, like somthing from zerosports. Guage clusters are plug and play. Im not sure about the mileage thing bc i dont care. Im planning on doing the swap too once i find a cheap guage.

like i said above the 05 STI cluster is NOT plug and play, it will work but you have to do some modifications to the plug above the gas/temp side, it will not plug right in.

So, in other words My new cluster in My car would read 30K instead of the 70K that is actually on the car. If that's the case are there any legal issues with doing this?

Yes if you dont get it properly documented, its HIGHLY illegal.

Federal law requires that if the odometer does not indicate the true mileage of the vehicle, a sticker must be placed on the drivers doorpost indicating this and stating the actual mileage.
Also bear in mind that you will probably be losing any mileage-based warranties by doing the cluster swap.

I assume You mean the sticker goes there in the event of a sale? As for the warranty, mine are all up now anyways.

No, not just when you are selling it. The sticker is supposed to be attached as soon as the discrepancy occurs, so that would mean at the time you do the swap.
This is also an issue for annual inspections, when the mileage would be checked and recorded.

The "worth it" part is up to you. A lot of folks have done this conversion and are very happy with it. You just need to be fully aware of the legal issues and consequences ahead of time.

Are you sure thats a federal law? When i had to title my rx-7 the dmv never said a word about the missmatched mileage and needing a federal sticker. I just checked the box saying the mileage on the odometer was not correct and that was the end of it.

Coming from a group that 99% remove a cat from their car (Illegal in all 50 states) and you are worried about changing you gauge cluster? Just change it out once a year for inspection or find one with close to the same miles.

'05 gauge clusters DO NOT FIT the 02-03-04 harnesses.
It will not work unless you are willing to change the circuit board inside the gauge cluster.
04 Works fine.. 05 does not.

I tried searching. Any chance there is a write up on how to put an 05 cluster in an 02-04? I have a 05 sti cluster by the way. thanks

You don't want to do it.
Sell the 05 cluster
Buy an 04 cluster
The ONLY way to make it work is to either cut n splice wires or change your circuit board.
BTW if you mess up anything during this process, you will be out 2 gauge clusters, because you have to swap stuff from the 02 to the 05.
