Sylvania SilverStar or any headlight bulb for WRX? part 1

Sylvania SilverStar or any headlight bulb for WRX?

Anyone knows if these bulbs will fit the headlights of the WRX? If not, what bulb can I use that is white (not blueish) and give a bit more light than stock? same thing for the fog lights.

Not something that will melt my harness, etc. Just brighter, whiter if possible.

i use polarg VIP's they are pretty whitish purple....very good lights, although my understanding is they dont make 9007's....PIAA are also pretty bright, but short bulb life.....polargs are stock wattage....your fogs are never gonna really look white...teh reflectors are too big and will never match the heads..

Andres:

I was under Sylvania's web page, and checked their new SilverStar bulb...it comes in 9005/9006 and 9007 being 60/70 watts. I guess these works as headlight bulbs.

I have them in my car. Soooo much better than stock :D

Brian: Which bulb?
STI RDY 05-22-2002 12:39 PM

I have a friend that bought the Philips "cool blue" light (very reasonably priced at Walmart). I have not seen it personally but he told me it is much better than stock.

Another friend bought some Xenon-filled bulbs and absolutely loved them.

Julio,

I bought the Silverstars about 2 months ago and they work well. They are about 5 watts more than stock and have not "hurt" the wiring harness at all. The light is white with no tint towards another color just white. I have been very happy with them so far.

Thanks Brian: Just about to place the order right away. Now, all I need is a set of bulb for fog lights that goes along with the Silverstars.

Have anyone replaced the 194? With?
H8YNERS 05-22-2002 03:07 PM

Ok...so the WRX manual lists bulb #9007 as the one. My question is the Silverstar lists their 9007 as a 60/70 watt max. Would this be okay w/the WRX as in not burning up the wiring harness? Does the 60/70 rating mean its 60 watt low & 70 watt high (or vice versa), hence 5 watts more than stock (55 L/60 H)...or something like that?

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen: Just hanged up with a Sylvania customer rep, and asked the same question. Answer: This is the maximum safest wattage that the harness will allow without any damage at all. Despite being brighter, whiter. Very polite and knowledgeable.

Just ordered mine. Looking foward to get some Hella's 78140 (100 watts H3) for fog lights.
H8YNERS 05-22-2002 03:22 PM

Julio:

Great...thanks! So, it seems as though the 9007's will be okay then. One more question, how much do the bulbs cost? I'm assuming you ordered straight from Sylvania?

Thanks much,
Stephen

9007's are now available.

There are a number of Japanese 9007 bulbs that just recently came out. The older cars have H-4's and they are available everywhere.

I've been using Raybrig Zenon H-4 130/125 watt in Cherokee (with replacement Euro type lights that take H-4's)) and on a Triumph cycle and they are unbelievable. I checked lens temperatures with an infrared gun and they run cooler than stock bulbs. The Cherokee has had them for 4 years and 90,000 miles with no failures. Bike, no failures in 12,000 mi. (runs 2 bulbs). But they cost about $70 a pair.

Got PIAA 9007's in 130/125 watts for the WRX 12,000 miles ago. No failures. Far, far brighter than stock. Kind of a diamond white beam. Cost about $70 a pair also. Check PIAA web site. Your wiring harness won't fail.

My foglights have PIAA 100 watt H-3's. A blueish-white beam, real nice looking. Same price.
The 2002 WRX lights were improved with new lens and reflector design. But there's no reason why you can't make them a hell of a lot better, without having to go to the expense of Hella rally lighting.

Pagel:

You haven't had ANY problems with your connectors/harness or wires with that wattage. ?

Are you running any pulley(s) and radio+amps, etc?

i used to run these...after about 6months they began to melt my harness...they also are too blue for my taste and not anywhere near as effective as the polarg VIP's

I went to my neighborhood Schucks to get some Mobil 1 for my oil change. I decided to see if they had any SilverStars and, lo & behold, they did. I bought the last two 9007's they had. The price was $24.99 each or .04 more each than what you ordered. I installed them right there in there parking lot. I can't wait to test them when it's dark. :)

I didn't pay attention before but I see you live in Puerto Rico. I lived not too far away from you for about 3 1/2 years in Panama (former Canal Zone). I went to highschool and 1st semester of college ("our lady of the big ditch").:p

Anyhow, I get my WRX back from its 15k service today at 1pm. I will get a chance to test the lights tonight and let you know.

there is no way it can be 35W low beam....they make reverse lights with a higher wattage than that....check the owners manual...but i am 100% sure it is not 35....

Jaxx:

Check your WRX manual. It says the headlamp bulbs (#9007) are 55/60 watts. The SilverStars I got are 60/70 and should pose no problem. :)

So are they noticably brighter? Worth $50?
IggDawg 05-23-2002 06:09 PM

Who's running 100 fog bulbs? I can get 100W bulbs at my local autozone (or clone) for cheap. The wires are pretty thin on teh stock fog light harness. has anyone been running 100w without problems? on an MY02 (if the systems are in fact different)?

Madrex: Don't know yet as WRX was at dealer for 15k late afternoon yesterday and I picked her up today at 3:00pm. I will test tonight and report back. :)
