They're back for WRC '07 part 1

Weasel 555 12-14-2006 08:46 PM

They're back for WRC '07
from rally-live:
Mitsubishi Motors Motor Sports (MMSP) will make its return in the World Championship as an official team next year. MMSP will compete in all the European rounds of the championship, for a total of 12 events out of 16.

Toni Gardemeister and 2005 Middle East Rally Champion Khalid Al Qassimi will be the two drivers of the team. Mitsubishi will be entered in the Manufacturer Team class, which is the equivalent more or less to this season's M2 category.

MMSP will start its season at the Monte Carlo Rally, using the 2005-spec Lancer WRC. Later in the season, Mitsubishi will introduce the 2007 version of the Lancer, once the FIA homologation is completed and the car is ready for its debut.

This season, Mitsubishi supported privateers in a few WRC events. Jussi Valimaki had three top ten results at the wheel of the Lancer, including a fifth place in Rally d'Italia Sardegna. Gigi Galli retired at the Monte Carlo but finished fourth in Sweden driving the Lancer WRC. Daniel Carlsson retired in Finland but scored an impressive third place at the wheel of his Mitsubishi in Sweden.

:D

They did say that they would only bow out for a year.

bitterWRX 12-15-2006 04:45 AM

Next year is going to be very very good.
SlideWRX 12-15-2006 11:52 AM

Cool to see Toni Gardemeister driving; Driving for Ford partly this year, up until the last couple events, he was ahead of Petter, with only running in four or five events.

My cat was ahead of Petter, with the car failing him and him flying into rocks, it wasnt' very hard.
bjorn240 12-15-2006 12:18 PM

Toni didn't drive for Ford this year. He drove a Xsara for Astra Racing.
WagonMonster 12-15-2006 01:53 PM

Maybe not...
CirrusWRX 12-18-2006 11:32 AM

^so which is it?
katsimbris 12-18-2006 11:46 AM

Well, that would explain why they would have been running under the "M2" classification. A privateer team that would be running WRC-spec cars.

Mitsubishi wants the cars to be involved.

RalliArt Europe is supposedly putting up a big portion of the budget for the team after the Middle Eastern money. The head Mitsubishi offices just don't want to see there team get whomped on, because, lets face it, if they get mroe than 10 manufacturers points it will be a miracle, there will probably be as many as 5 Fords infront of them, as well as 4 year old Xsaras and Subies. If I was Mitsubishi I'd do the same thing, get the cars out there but do everything I could to make it look as un-official as possible. If they do well it is thanks to the awesome car and team on loan from Mitsubishi, if they do poorly it is an outdated car ran by privateers....
katsimbris 12-18-2006 02:19 PM

^^Well put, I couldn't agree more.
Weasel 555 12-20-2006 08:45 AM

hold on.......

Mitsubishi won't be back in '07 - but....

Mitsubishi have dismissed reports that they will return to FIA World Rally Championship in 2007, although a team will run with two Lancer WRC cars, as was leaked last week.

According to rallye-magazin.de, a spokesperson for Mitsubishi has said that nothing will change next season and that after having terminated their WRC programme at the end of 2005, they have no intention of coming back in an official capacity. What this effectively means is that the unnamed team will still compete in 2007, fielding two cars on 12 of the 16 events - one for ex-Ford works driver, Toni Gardemeister and the other for Khalid Al Qassimi, the 2005 Middle East Rally champion, but the outfit will not have 'Mitsubishi' in the team title.

Official confirmation of this teams' participation in the 2007 FIA World Rally Championship, as a 'Manufacturer Team', is expected very soon, possibly later today [Monday] or on Tuesday.

More to follow as we get it...
OBShahn 12-20-2006 11:31 AM

they are listed as a manufacturer team on the monte entry list so whatever...

It is just Mitsubishi bosses playing with semantics so when they are slow they can try to play it down and not take bad press from it...

I believe the provisional MC entry list came out a few weeks ago.

Monday...

The official deadline to register with the FIA for the JWRC, PCWRC and WRC for championships was last Friday...
bjorn240 12-22-2006 03:16 PM

Yeah, but Monte Carlo is neither a JWRC or PWRC event in 2007. And Manufacturer Team teams (nee M2) can register as late as March and don't have to run their first event until Sardinia.
