those big knobby things...

everytime i go to the subaru dealership and sit in the new WRXs and STi's, I can't help but wish I had the fancy big knobs for the AC and heater controls. As much as I love the 04-05 exterior, I  LOVE:banana: the 05+ interior, and I am really curious if it's possible to convert my 04 interior into an 05+ interior...
ie. going from this:
'
to this:

is that doable? i don't mind changing other aspects of the dashboard like the trim around the center console etc... if it turns into a full dashboard conversion i might even do that.
has anyone ever considered/done that before?

In my mind, everything is possible. It all depends on how much money and time you want to put into it.

don't meant to sound rude but are you sure it's even possible to do it??? those dials in the second pic have got climate control functions which i presume it's not just a matter of changing the dials and the surrounding facade

maybe instead of "search" it would be nice to have maybe, i don't know, useful keywords?
unless you want me to type out a full report on keywords i have used with the type of search results yielded, and in which forums i searched in along with possible leads that turned out to be not-so-closely related to my search topic?
you'd think a nasioc member of two years would know how to use the search tool on the website esp. after seeing n00bs get flamed by "veterans".
but hey i'll try searching again anyway, since that's the most help you found yourself capable of giving. thanks though. that really got me so much closer to finding any useful info.
----------edit-------
and sorry, that would be my disgruntled side talking. one of those days where you feel like you're 18 again and the whole world is against you. then you wake up after a nap and you're like, "wapce..." and it's all better.

good question, im curious if i could just swap out the a/c vents from an 05 to an 04.. i'm not a fan of the cupholder by the hazard button

rallyjiggz ... to answer your question...yes it is possible....and the '05 HVAC unit plugs straight into the original harness...works fine, assuming that the 04 pic. you show above is what you have :)

seems like alot of trouble to have auto-climate controls and "big knobby things." manual controls are better anyway IMO.

That might be true in the UK but not here. The older HVAC controls are manual/cable operated, the newer ones are automatic/electronically operated. Swapping them is not practical. Yes it may be possible but a lot of stuff would have to be changed, well beyond just the controls. Lots of time, labor and $$$.

...there we go, I see someone can take 1 minute out of their busy time on this site to give useful/helpful information to those in need.

you know, others... with correct information... did the same in this thread, before your post...
seriously, it can't be done without putting in a new HVAC system which will not be easy.

i know of a few sti's that have done this. the only trouble was moving the e-brake to the other side, which is fairly easy. and if you didn't want to do that, just get a rhd center console. you just need the trim peices, hvac, and center console. it is very do-able and not very hard. at least in sti's i don't know if wrx hvac controls are different. the new controls plug right in to the harness

i'd have to look at my friend's '06 impreza and compare it to mine (which is an '04) - we have the same style knobs (not the "big knobby things") but his might have his HVAC wired up different. is there a lot of splicing/wiring that would have to be involved with a newer hvac?
it sounds complicated enough... it'd be perfect for a winter project! so is it impossible then to just rewire and change the HVAC itself, and somehow 'retro' fit the newer knobs? just asking in case someone already has a definitive answer for that. i'm going to try to look at the '06 this weekend to see if what i think is a possibility is doable.

thanks anyway but as i already mentioned, he didn't touch the heating/ventilation/air-conditioner knobs and kept them the same.
maybe it's just too much of a PITA to do, for no particular reason other than to have something to do? i'm still curious as to whether it's even possible or not though.

The 05+ HVAC is electronic...the 02-04 is mechanical. You can do the console swap and keep the 04 knobs or swap the whole hvac system and use the 05+ auto controls.

well i guess sti's hvac are different, cuz i've seen guys do the swap. what'd be REALLY bad ass is someone find a way to use the tribeca hvac knobs, those are freakin sweet!
| SpDRcrWrex | 10-20-2006 11:58 AM |
it's possible.
you need the complete center console change.
the dash controls are different sized between -04 and +05.
because they are different, you need to swap in the whole center console.
this requires refitting the e-brake
the new parts (all inclusive can be found on ebay or at genuinesubaruparts.com ) https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html
under bodyparts 05 impreza, console, center console
of course, the hvac system has to be swapped from mechanical to electrical.
that requires purchasing the sensor unit and such......
oh i did this.........cuz i liked it better....it is now offered in the sti limited
