Unused OBS Hood Scoops + Cold Cathodes = TEH WIN! [Updated]
okay so i will probably be kicked out of nasoic for perpetrating this abomination-in-taste upon my subie, but goddammit i had to use those vents on my OBS for something. besides, it's pretty.

items: (1) blue 12" cold cathode computer case light
(2) green circular cold cathode computer fan light
(3) cold cathode power supply
(na) misc. wiring, wire nuts, 3m tape, adhesive velcro.

tools: (1) dremel type tool and/or wire nips [dykes]
(1) hot-glue gun
(1) 10mm wrench

front view. 12'' blue up inside the main scoop with adhesive velcro. EDIT: i moved it from its previous postion and eliminated the 2nd light; now the tube is only visible from an extreme angle. updated pic reflects this:

i nibbled out channels in the side vents to allow the circular cathodes to sit between them and the backing plate. dabs of hot glue to secure.

heres a full view of the system. the 3 blue boxes are the power supplies. the two side vent supplies are secured to the hood using 3m, the 12" cathode supply is secured to the firewall behind the engine air intake using adhesive velcro. all of the connetions into and out of the supplies unplug easily for maintenance. the switching wire runs into the cabin through the conveniently placed through-hole just to the right of the 12" supply. power is switched ground to a bolt up under the dash. the bundle of wires coming off the negative battery terminal and the red wire coming off the front of the positive terminal have nothing to do with the cathodes; that's my grounding and the driving lights, respectively. the wires leading from the 12" cathode supply up into the scoop are seperated purposely; the high frequency/voltage used for cathodes cannot be run through normal wires if they are side-by-side, and i didn't have any special silicone/insulated wire on hand, hence seperated wires. i wasn't just being messy. EDIT: note that now only one light is used in the main scoop, however these pics shoe two pairs of wires going in...)

side vent supply.

here's my switch. i'm soon going to add a second switch+circuit that will pulse the cathodes in synch with whatever is playing through the stereo. oh yes.

EDIT: i'm still not quite happy with the main scoop light.. gonna play around with it some more... maybe buff or remove the scoop backing plate... updates to come.

Nice friggen toaster!
Lunis 02-18-2006 11:51 AM

looks ok but it would be better if you could set it up without being able to see the tubes from the lights through the vents...

yes i've been thinking about that too actually. i'm probably going to move the 12'' cathodes up into the top of the scoop so that you can't actually see them. as for the side vent ones i'll probably just leave them as they're really not very noticeable unless you're looking for them.

rice but well done...good job...the toaster is P I M P
sneefy 02-18-2006 08:21 PM

I always thought it would have been cool to mount tiny projector driving lights in the scoop of my old RS...
