Where to buy Carbon Fiber dash?
I´m looking for a reliable online place to buy carbon fiber sheets (or imitation) to make a custom dash for my impreza. Like the ones foliatec had.
| brickdawg | 09-04-2001 10:33 PM |
The best Carbon Fiber kit!
DON'T get the factory kit! The factory kit is made out of imitation carbon fiber as is the folia tec kit. There is a HUGE difference between real and fake carbon fiber. I know becuase I have the real thing. You can get the kit from Tora Sport. Their number is 310-451-2133. They have been in the business of making carbon fiber kits for over 5 years and are extremly high quality. You can find an example of an Integra kit in the August Super Street.
I ordered my WRX and while I waited for the car to come for a month I was in touch with Tora Sport. Steve was very helpful becuase at that time the kit had not even been made yet. He kept me in the loop and once the kit was designed, I was the first to order it for the WRX. It looks PHAT!!! I am not sure if they have the kit for your car but they make it if you ask.
The WRX kit is a 21 piece real carbon fiber kit and costs $246.40. No, I don't work for Tora Sport, I just get excited when I spend my hard earned money on a product that actually lives up to its expectations.
Steve will send you decals in whatever color you want to match your car. He will also send you a schematic of the kit which details each piece you receive.
One thing I did that I think was smart is I got the kit professionaly installed at Custom Soft Trim in Austin. They charged me $55 for the install. It would have taken me all day with a heat gun and I probably would have broken one of the beautiful pieces. Worth the money unless you are an expert. Face it, you don't want to learn on you tight ride.
By the way, if anybody orders the kit, let them know you got it because of me, Steven Bricker in Austin. Steve knows who I am and that would be cool because I want him to hook me up for a kit for my sister's Integra. I know, I have to work on her to get a Scooby.
E-mail me or whatever if you have any questions and good luck with your ride!

only interior pic so far
This is the only pic I have right now. I know it is a bad angle and the light sucks. You can see that the CF goes all around the shift knob and up to the arm rest. Trust me, get the real stuff and you will not regret it. When it is dark at night and you drive under a street light the light will catch the dark CF and make it look 3D. Suppa Dope Trick.

bark4all was doing a group buy on them, you could get almost anything you wanted. complete trim for all the inside too (not only dash), however i am not sure if the 97 L is compatible with the RS

Thats not a real CF dash kit this is:

Real CF, you got to be kidding?!?
Brickdawg Said "There is a HUGE difference between real and fake carbon fiber. I know becuase I have the real thing."
Brickdawg - I have no doubt that the kit offered by Tora Sport or Challenger deep is better than the OEM CF. But I think you are spreading a great deal of disinformation when you say those kits are REAL CF and the OEM isn't. I must also admit to never seeing one of these ''Real" CF kits in person, but it can not be real CF if it is templated decals or vinyl sheets. Besides a REAL CF dash would be way more expensive than $250. Real CF is just that, carbon fiber weave material similar to fiberglass that gets laminated in epoxy (like fiberglass) and then is baked or autoclaved under very high temps and very high levels of vacum. Its the autoclaving process that gives CF its strength. That is what real CF is for race cars. It is a very difficult and expensive process. All these kits you speak of are simply a better decal. That's it, it isn't anymore real or less real, just more realistic, and that is probably subjective at best.
Not that this is a bad thing. The kits are templated, which make them easy to apply and probably a lot better looking and cheaper than the OEM option. Who can afford or who is making real CF. Not many at all. Sometimes the only real option is 'fake' CF. I used vinyl sheets on my defi gauge pod. The sheets I got were from www.tapeworks.com. Check them out. If you do a search for my user name you will find my defi gauge pod install with pics of the pod in CF.
I do however have the Zero sports wing adapters which are REAL CF. Real CF material laid up in epoxy. I don't think, however, that they have gone the next step with CF which would be to autoclave it. My guess is, as well, that the majority if not all of the CF hoods we see are the same thing. Real CF weave material laid up in fiberglass epoxy but not baked.

Not true!
jjameson,
Wrong... you can buy REAL CF for a reasonable price and there is a HUGE difference. I got mine for less $260 shipped and it is not a tape or look. It is precut to the exact dash. That is why they have to make the kit for your specific car. It is woven carbon fiber (all CF is) that has a thick clear coat epoxy over it.
Example: momo's shift knobs use fake carbon and razo's use real.
I am not trying to prove anything or start an argument over the site. I just know that you CAN get the real thing for your WRX and other Scoobys.
Just call Tora Sport.
Peace playas!

You can also get real CF trim (21 pieces) from woodtrim.com (joshua tree). I've seen the real aluminum kit and the synthetic aluminum kits on the passat and the quality is really nice. My girlfriend and I are considering getting these for her 02 RS. Right now, 15% off plus free shipping... I think the total is like $218 or something like that.

Also, brickdawg is right... these are real carbon fiber trim. They are not tape or like foliatec.... the joshua tree kit has 3M adhesive backing on the pieces. Also, there are differences between cheap kits on ebay and quality kits. A lot of the cheap kits are just cut without the edges beveled. The joshua kits have beveled edges so it looks more finished and oem.

Talk to steve(bark4all) he is doing a group buy for my98-01 rs dash kits from challenger deep. They make good stuff!!! See if you can get in on it, it's really close to going down. Its also only $150 + shipping!
| aov | 09-06-2001 02:19 PM |
From what I understand the kits you guys are talking about do not replace the stock parts, they just glue/tape on?! I agree the optional cf kit from Subaru doesn't look as good as real cf, but I would really like to see some pictures of how they look in the car.
Could someone post some pics, please!
Thanks,
-Anders

I decided to go with the OEM CF, because I didn't want to deal with sticking parts on, or installing things that may or may not look right. I did notice that it is faux CF, but at 2 feet away, you honestly cannot tell. The silver, although nice, especially on silver and red WRX's, stood out too much IMO. Plus, stuff heats up in the interior on hot day's, I wanted something that has been tested by the factory, and is warrantied by subaru for a few years. Enough with peeling/warping dash parts with Mitsubishi... hehe!

let me ask...did you trim that piece or did it come like that? See the kit I did the g/b has a piece that borders the shift boot, but I don't know how I'm gonna bend it just right to fit right in there. I am thinking about just cutting it but I don't wanna risk botching the job.
| Wedge | 10-16-2001 08:06 PM |
Yup! Had to trim mine. The kit I received was for the Automatic, :(
Don't know if they make one for the manual.
Are you going to the RaceRock meet in Nov. 17th in O-Town? I'll be there if you wanna check it out. :)

I hear ya
yeah man I'll probably go. I'm pretty sure I'll be in the midst of job hunting so I can probably make it. I pulled my post because I wasn't sure if I was gonna go. Yeah for some reason they are all for the automatic in form. I guess I'll figure out a way to trim it just right so it doesn't look like I went at it with a jigsaw.
Thanks man,
Steve

brickdawg,
I think jjameson was trying to say that the CF kits offered by Tora sports is not a real CF dash in the sense that the pieces are only stick-ons. They don't replace any parts; they actually add weight to the car. A real CF dash is made entirely of CF like in rally cars, F1 cars, etc. As such, they are very expensive to make.

Brickdwag's kit is sweet, I have seen it. Plus he has a leather interior which really makes it look like a car that costs 20K more. Anyway, the only prob I have with his kit is that the AC vent shroud is not covered (still silver). Don't know why really, but just looks kinda odd. Brick's setup is sweet though. Really nice with the black leather. I'll try to snap soem pics at our next meet.

yeah
I'd like to see pics of it too. I haven't seen that kit you are guys are describing. be sure to post them on here so we can check it out. and I didn't mean to kick up old dirt or anything, just thought this discussion was rather interesting.
Hell if I could find a company that would have replacement interior parts made out of real c/f for a reasonable price, I would probably be all over it...then when I think about it...if I had that kinda money to blow, I'd be driving an Ruff C2 on the weekends and a WRX STi-Type RA to MY office or to my corner to sell that crack , know what I mean? hehe
later,
Steve

That looks dope...what kit is that?? OEM?!?!?
| Code-7 | 04-18-2002 09:56 PM |
Yes that's OEM. I have the OEM carbon fiber on my dash as well, and I don't know what the hell these people are smoking. The OEM kit looks better than ANY stick on crap available out there. Go to your local dealer, see if they have any WRX's with carbon fiber in their dash, and/or order the OEM kit from the factory. You don't have to pay for it til it gets there, so when you go to pick it up, you can take a look at it to see if you like it. If you don't, simply tell them you changed your mind. No harm done.
Stay away from that stick on crap.
