Where to buy hydraulic handbrake? part 1

Where to buy hydraulic handbrake?
I just did a search and didn't come up with what I was looking for. I am trying to find out where I can buy a Hydraulic Handbrake conversion for my 04 STi. I don't really care if it retains the stock cable function or not. If you know of more than one manufacturer of said kit who would you reccomend? Oh and has anybody heard of someone making any type of shift lever extension so that the shifter is a little closer to the wheel? I am really not interested in the short throw kits if they just shorten the darn lever, I would much prefer to have it up higher. Of course if I could raise it up and shorten the throw that would be the best.

Maybe someday Cobb will make an adjustable length shift lever for the STI like that one you linked to for the WRX. No longer options available now though.

As for the handbrake, Rally Design has a couple of options: http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=562_599

Be prepared to scrap your ABS and re-plumb your brakes for F/R circuits.

Oops - didn't notice it was WRX only. What is different about the STI lever?
Chaste Automotive 03-10-2005 08:47 AM

Well you have several options, Group N homologated version with a cam lock to lock it for super $$$, a WRC one that looks cool but also not cheap, or the above mentioned. THose are really your only option.
patr 03-10-2005 10:51 PM

actually, there are other options

there are people that make a hydraulic group N compatible crossover circuit handbrake, this is before the "new school" hydraulic hbrake in the latest Group N soob homologations

even as per the "homologated' one there are also copies around

keep hunting, guys who have already done this to their cars can fab one for you (but I dont know of too any in the states). I dont' usually send stuff to people but if you really really want one (I would ask why first and foremost, but its none of my business) PM me.

we also have 'fly off' handbrake conversion kits for the stocker cable one for the less hardcore, this comes with a Group N legal handbrake extension, plus a thumb button at the end setup in reverse operation (push to lock), perfect for probably what you want, without going hydraulic (but then again, I dont know what you want)

Or, if you want a crazy "happy handle" look for a handbrake for a sand rail racer. We've put one in our rally car.

I have seen a kit a while back made just for the Impreza. It replaces the cables with a hydrulic cylinder like you would have in a regular drum brake setup. This would force the e-brake pads out like the cable system would and still keep the locking feature like stock. The kit has the master cylinder setup for the brake handle, lines and the cylinders to go in the rear brakes. From what I saw, you would never know the difference unless you crawled in the car or pulled up the center console to look at the linkage.
Patrick L 03-11-2005 08:15 PM

BTW, I did find this. STI seems to make a kit and is homologated in FIA Group N in 2005.

thats the grp n kit

you can't just plug in a cylinder to the diagonal system...
ANZAC_1915 03-11-2005 11:11 PM

Whatever you do, make sure you retain a microswitch to feed the ebrake signal into the DCCD TCU to open the center diff when you use the ebrake.

In terms of adapting the GroupN kit to the USDM STi....

From the diagrams in the GroupN catalog, it looks like the Spec-C has two lines going back to the rear calipers and of course, no ABS. In the tunnel about where the handbrake would go is a ~6" piece of the line that can be taken out so the handbrake can be put right in-line. I'm guessing the USDM model doesn't have this, can anyone confirm this? According to the information I've found, is seems like the handbrake can handle both lines running to the rear. Is there any reason this couldn't handle the diagnol lines leading from the ABS system to the calipers?

I would say, make your own...look up a tilton or wilwood single master cylinder bracket and attach your own lever...really simple and cheap

The Forrester shift lever is two inches higher than the stock WRX lever. I used that, and a Perrin short throw adapter and I love it! My throws are as short as or shorter than stock, but two inches higher and very close to the wheel. The shift knob below is from hardbar.net; It is one of thier Corvette knobs they threaded for the Subaru 12x1.25 threads.

edit: huh, someone bumped a six month old thread. Oh well! :)

Anyone do this yet, for the 08+ STIs?

there's been a whole bunch done, both with the grp N cross over setup and a straight front/rear setup:

(click on "detailed pictures of 2010 deliveries") underneath the photos

Its a lot easier if its a real motorsports project.

if you really really want the cross over setup retained, and run a dual master handbrake (like the Grp N one) you have to cut and splice the lines on the tunnel. Not a big job, but not so easy either for the DIY guys who cant flare the fittings. Keep in mind the Grp N one ends up on the pax side of the tunnel

RR also has complete MY08+ brake line sets if you mess yours up - all take offs from teh cars pictured above.

To keep the interior semi-intact, you will need to trim the center console as well as the carpet on the pax side under the radio console area. There are a few cars hanging around with the full cross over setup (not any MY08+s, though, they've been delivered). Let me know if you want to see pics and I will post them up.

I think alcon or AP makes the same thing but with higher quality components.

I put one of those in a non-abs evo by switching to a an abs 2-port MC but ditched the diagonal system to do it. One port tees to the front brakes, the other goes to the rear, through a proportioning valve, through the handbrake, and to the rear wheels. it's pretty cool because we built a box to raise the shifter assembly 4" and incorporated the handbrake into it so the lever is right next to the shifter. Wish I'd taken a picture.

if you've ever ripped a drag racing staging brake off its mounts in a rally car - you'd know how/why they aren't ideal ...

the sti Group N one uses AP master cylinders... and has beefy mounts - I have three here right in front of me :-)

I can send you pics if you want.

As well, if you just want a SINGLE MASTER NON-CROSSOVER unit, there are many available in both vertical and horizontal configuration - but most importantly you need one with a tougher mount.

this pic here shows a vertical single master unit with a tough mount:

http://www.rocketrally.com/website/images/stories/pro-build/MY2010-red/RR-2010-STI-User-Manual%20012_sm.jpg

Remember, if you get a single master unit, it can only work if you dont need the dual master (to retain the horizontal circuit) - and again, if you do that, you need to route new lines (and normally ditch the abs)

MSI- DO you guys have a dual circut option or just a single like everyone else?
MSI 04-20-2010 08:32 AM

The dual circuit option depends on what cylinder you use. Our model is designed to accommodate both. As you see from the photos above, it works with any bearing mounted unit, or flange style. I believe we are the only company to offer both options in a single unit.

Mine came with the staging brake in it. I think I'll look at re-enforcing it a little tonight...
