Where to mount the Cobb AP?!? part 1

nxwrxfx 01-27-2006 10:35 AM

Where to mount the Cobb AP?!?
Hey everyone,
So I finally went to a tuned Stage II with the Cobb AP yesterday, but now I have a bit of a problem.

Basically, where do you guys mount your Cobb AP for flashing real-time maps when you are on the go??
And also I want to keep it stealth (like everything else i've done in the interior) so I don't get my **** stolen.

I was thinking about relocating the OBD-II port somewhere behind the dash and make a custom tray/mount in the glovebox for the Cobb AP unit.
That way, when I leave the car I could flash the real-time Security map and lock my glove box when I go.
That way it's still very stealth looking but I get the benefit of not having to unpack and setup my Cobb everytime I want to use it.

Has anyone tried this?
Or something similar?

I believe most people just keep the main unit in the box. Someone else posted a question like this a little while back and the consensus was that it wasn't all that beneficial to have it mounted since it wasn't used that often. I had mine in my trunk for a little while in the cargo net but found that I never used it.

another idea (another member did this and worked out great) was to rig it into the cup holder above the radio. That might be a spot..other than that just keep it with you and plug it in when you need it..only takes a few seconds to set it up, thats what I do :o

There isn't really any benefit to mounting it anywhere in the cabin that I can really think of. The AP is a rather big unit, so mounting it would take up a fair amount of space. It would be a lot of trouble to relocate the OBD-II port somewhere where you can plug the AP in and leave it. The only time it can be used 100% of the time, would be if you left it on Read Live Boost setting... and then you just have a big, complicated boost gauge. I keep mine in my glove box with the cord attached to it, and when I need to I just plug it into the OBD-II port... it takes about 10 seconds.

Bah... yeah that seems to be the general concensus is to just keep it in the box somewhere in your car... But to me that kind of defeats the whole "anti-theft" idea of the cobb AP.

I mean, honestly, if a car jacker knows about Subarus and the Cobb and finds it in the car out in the open, he'll either take it (leaving you with a married ECU and no AP!) or he'll use it to undo your security map settings.

That's why I was thinking about making some kind of a custom mount in the glovebox so that I could lock the Cobb in there when I'm away from my car for long periods of time.

I have to admit, if I made a custom mount id probably just leave the cable in the glove box too. I looked at the plate the OBD-II port was hooked onto and don't feel like moving that thing somewhere else.

The live boost feature was kind of neat since it reads in PSI, but I have a Blitz DCII turbo timer w/ a built in boost gauge mounted next to the cupholder that I use for boost readings.
I also wonder if reading boost from the ECU is as reliable as the Blitz unit that's actually tapped into a vaccuum line.
Any thoughts on this?

Learning to convert HKPA to PSI on the Blitz unit was a PITA though, but I've got it down more or less.

i keep mine ultra stealth by keeping it in it's box under my dresser in my room! but really, i don't see any need to keep it in the car. i flash the map i want, and never see it again for months until i have a long trip and i flash the economy map. on a long trip i might throw it in the glove box just so i can switch while i'm away from home...if i need the power for some reason...but there's no need to keep it plugged in
psyber_0ptix 01-27-2006 11:39 AM

its a shame it isnt as easy as UTEC's map selector switch, but then again, HOW many maps are there to choose from.

maybe about 3 per setup?

stage map/protune, economy, anti theft.

AP doesnt need to have many different maps for rain, snow, dry, humid, underwater, hyperdrive

Neither does the UTEC if you know how to use it.

<<Ran 1 map for 18+ months with no problem. 100deg summer, -5 winter. 1 map.

 funnay.
nxwrxfx 01-27-2006 01:02 PM

Besides.... with the UTEC you really should tune every single map you do...
I know Cobb OTS maps aren't that great, but at least they work without having to pay a dynotuner.

Although i'm definitely getting a Protune in the next month or so after I get a new turbo.

So bah to you all... I guess i'll just keep the Cobb AP in the box for now, but I still think I might try that mount idea. ;)
turbo tecnica 01-27-2006 01:29 PM

I have used the Anti-theft maybe 2 or 3 times, and when I do... I take the AP with me. I have been with my girlfriend when I do this, so I just have her put it in her bag. To switch maps you have to have the key in the "ON" position I believe, so unless a thief has your keys I don't think he could really reflash the ECU.
sonicsuby 01-27-2006 01:31 PM

I grabbed the styrofoam out of the original box and found it to be a perfect fit in the underfloor tray in the back of my wagon :D
parker/slc/gc8fan 01-27-2006 02:46 PM

Mikkito hard wired here AP to the diagport, that way she could just lock the AP in the Glove box and hook it up in a jiffy.

The AP reads boost directly from the ECU, if that isnt accurate I dont know what is.
toekneeyo 01-27-2006 03:05 PM

the last time someone asked where to mount the ap...

people submitted pictures of the AP resting in various positions in the car...

basically that person got flamed with a whole bunch of smart a$$e$
toekneeyo 01-27-2006 03:06 PM

i like that idea. im gonna try that in my sedan.

WHAT????!!! COBB finally released their hyperdrive map? Jeez. I guess that's what I get for living under a damn rock lately.

Seriously though, if you feel that you'll be switching maps that frequently, put the thing in your glovebox, locked, and pull it out and flash when the feeling hits you.

mmmm, hyperdrive.

DeKaP 01-27-2006 03:55 PM

i leave mines in my house in the box unless im going out of town than the ap comes for the ride for antitheft
EmsTrauma 01-27-2006 04:05 PM

i use the valet and anit theft alot. Mine just sits in the glove box. until needed. As do most of the guys who have it around here.
enewtabie 01-27-2006 04:11 PM

mmm,the hyperdrive map is old..I just got the new time travel map v.1.

AP 2.0 mounting location ideas
AP 2.0 brings back this thread to life. Added functionallity warrants a permanent install, post here your future mounting ideas.
BlackWorks 11-17-2006 02:45 PM

AP 2.0 looks to be about the same size as an Ipod. If I upgrade to the 2.0, I would probably fab-up something like the i pod charger.

Cobb is working on a mounting solution for 2.0. since it has so much more realtime content and a decent size.
007WRX 11-17-2006 03:33 PM

thats a good idea...i guess you would just romove it when you leave the car or what. I would not like to keep it sitting there though for the amount of people that notice these cars and like to peak in it.

Will exsisting ap users be able to upgrade or no?
swift2fly 07-06-2009 01:56 PM

bump from the dead.
anyone do a creative mount for the AP v2 yet? i was thinking about mounting mine on the steering where's it's easy access for the left or right thumb as you normally hold the wheel at about 10 & 2. just don't know how i would go about it yet since i like my installs to be clean.
