WRC 2001 (gasp) PS2 game part 1

WRC 2001 (gasp) PS2 game

OK,

I know this is the motorsports forum, but seeing as I can't take my wagon offroad yet (paints still too nice) I am REALLY looking forward to the FIA licensed game for the Playstation 2. I know someone out there likes games, so....

my question is: when will this game be available in the US. It goes on sale on Nov. 28 everywhere else in the world, but I guess since the US got no love for rallyin' we don't get to play?

:monkey: to whoevers responsible for this outrage
NoSaabs 11-19-2001 09:34 AM

gee...i'm not quite sure. but for those of us who have/will purchase the xbox, the collin mcrae rally game looks incredible...you can't really tell their models from the real thing side by side...scary! but i definitely can't wait for that to come out....
DLC 11-19-2001 10:07 AM

I've played through most of CMR 2.0 for the PC, and it's just incredible.

WRC 2001 is one of the many reasons i'm getting a PS2.
RaceCarRiot 11-19-2001 12:30 PM

umm, colin mccrae 3 is also coming out for PS2...
Scoobie Newbie 11-19-2001 09:52 PM

Any chance CM3 is coming out for the PC?
edkwon 11-20-2001 09:45 PM

I'm almost positive CM3 is coming out for the PC also.

CM3 web page
travmn 11-20-2001 10:57 PM

CM3 looks like it will be pretty good. haven't played any of the previous releases, but the new one is looking real promising.
according to http://ps2.ign.com/news/39748.html
the detail level will be extraordinary. should be good. just hope all these games come out for the xbox too ;)
after i got mine, my ps2 just doesn't look as good anymore.
Youngun 11-21-2001 12:38 AM

hopefully this time the multiplayer will be functional
Shik 11-21-2001 03:33 AM

CM3 doesn't look bad at all...

but fall of 2002? damn that's a long wait.

Talked to a fella at EB the other night and he could not find WRC 2001 in his books anywhere, and I believe it had what's coming out up to January of next year. Shouldn't be too hard to get it from across the pond though. Maybe a group buy
pio!pio! 11-21-2001 04:01 AM

I saw those pics of CM3, but I don't think that will actually be like that in the game. IT's too much to ask I think. Maybe they can render them like that realtime w/o having to render all the other stuff (the Stage, and all the physics modeling)

I will be pleasantly surprised, however, if it DOES look that good realtime.

Getting my PS2 tommorow, I hope. GT3 is sitting on the kitchen island waiting. tick tock tick tock. Hope it keeps me busy until CM3 and WRC hit our shores. Of course I'm hoping for a mod chip and a GB will happen before then.
Lafora 11-29-2001 04:17 AM

somehow i'm gonna wait till the release and review of Xbox's rallisport challenge before i jump on either platform.
hiro 11-29-2001 04:58 AM

Can US PS2 play UK version games? Or do we need gameshark/modchip like playing Japan versions?
Marquis 11-29-2001 06:49 AM

The UK uses PAL, so the answer is no. You need a version of the game that's NTSC, like a Japanese version would be.
TimStevens 11-29-2001 08:20 AM

Rallisport Challenge will feature SCCA Pro-Rally cars, so we should all go buy that game to support the US side of things ;)

Anyone notice the error in that posted pic? SWRT doesn't run on Michelins!
mykrrrr 11-29-2001 09:50 AM

JPN uses NTSC but it's different than NA NTSC. :(

elgorey 11-29-2001 12:04 PM

most european releases can be run in either PAL or NTSC since both formats are used in different areas of europe.

I bought the european version of Metropolis Street Racer and it worked fine on my US Dreamcast. It had a 50hz/60hz selector in the beginning.
elgorey 11-29-2001 12:13 PM

I read a not so great review of the game the other day, however the reviewer was obviously not into WRC and a lot of the "boring details" in the game WRC fans would enjoy.

The site I work for, www.consoledomain.com, has a review up, and the guy who wrote the review wasn't terribly fond of the game.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to review it as I'm in the US :(

My $0.02

I've been following the 2001 WRC game for a year or so hoping it would come out in the US at the same time it was shipped overseas. The graphics looked great, the stages were supposed to be the same ones run in the real WRC, but best of all it was supposed to be so real as to make it one of the most frustrating games ever released. I had heard there were difficulty settings that would allow you to crash out of the stage and out of the rally, or even have random failures that would take you out of the rally anyway. There were just so many little things that made this game sound so interesting that I knew it would be too good to be real. I haven't read reviews of its actual release overseas, but rumor has it they may never port it to the US now.

On the other hand, CM3 sounds like it will be plenty good on its own. I have the previous 2 versions and enjoyed each of them. I didn't know it was going to be released for PS2, but that makes me a very happy PS2 owner. It will take its place right next to GT3 as one of my fav PS2 games.

As for XBox titles: beware. I've noticed that almost all the XBox games that are being released will either be available on PC or PS2 as well. I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would buy an XBox just yet. I am disappointed MS got the Ferrari and Porsche license for Project Gotham Racing, but that should be out for PC in a month or so. I'd check to see if this other rally title for the XBox is slated to come out for the PC or PS2 before buying an XBox for it.

Ugh.. where do people get the idea that all Xbox games are ports?

Here's a bunch of the Xbox titles out now:

Xbox only titles:
Oddworld - Xbox exclusive
Project Gotham - Xbox exclusive
Halo - Xbox exclusive (rumors of PC in Q2-Q3 2002)
DOA3 - Xbox exclusive
Fusion Frenzy - Xbox exclusive
NFL Fever - Xbox exclusive
Air Force Delta Storm - Xbox exclusive
Amped - Xbox exclusive
Azurik - Xbox exclusive
Cell Damage - Xbox exclusive
Mad Dash Racing - Xbox exclusive
Rallisport - Probable Xbox exclusive

Ports:
Tony Hawk - All consoles
Nascar Thunder - PS2
Test Drive - Ps2
Madden 2002 - Every platform known to man
F1 2001 - PS2 & PC

You'll find a favorable ratio of ports to exclusive titles when you compare it to the PS2's own ratio of ports to exclusive titles. You saying that almost all xbox titles are ports is a little extreme.

RallyNavvie 11-30-2001 11:19 AM

Ooh, a Microsoft drone ;)

Are you buying one? I haven't even met anyone interested in that thing yet. I'm curious to know why you would? I admit, if Project Gotham Racing has as physics model somewhere between NFS:High Stakes and GT3 then I will be disappointed since I won't buy a platform for only a few games. I bought a PS2 for returning favorites like the GT series and Squaresoft titles. I think that's why a lot of people got one.

As for the games you listed there are only a few there I would really call "exclusive". I mean Oddworld is an old PSX title. And don't get me started on Halo; I used to work with Bungie back in the day when they were developing the Marathon series for the Mac. They promised that title would come out for the home computing crowd. I've previewed Air Force Delta and it's like the same game as Ace Combat 4 minus the cool plot.

No, they aren't all ports, but I'm comparing them to similar titles for PC and PS2. Of course many of them won't keep the same names. Now where are the similar titles on the MSBox for GT3 and the FF series?
TimStevens 11-30-2001 11:49 AM

I'm not an MS drone :p I'm a game reviewer, and if anything I'm a Sega drone ;)

Yes, I own one, and have been nothing short of impressed. This is from a guy who owns just about every console going back to the Atari days. I've never been this enamored with a console at launch. I've shown lots of friends, and all have been impressed. Lots of people are interested. MS sold somewhere between 350-650 thousand units in a weekend... that should tell you something. Not to mention the fact that more people are on GameSpy playing Halo than any of their other games ;)

Sega GT2002 looks to be a pretty decent GT clone. Sega GT wasn't as good as the GT series in many ways, but hopefully Sega will have learned from their mistakes there. We'll see. There won't ever be a GT game on the Xbox, but Square has pledged FF XI on the Xbox, and one could imagine that they'd continue the series after that (if they're still in business by then).

And what's your complaint about the physics in Project Gotham?

-tim

p.s. I get many of my games for free, so please don't think I'm biased because I'm trying to justify my purchase ;)

No plans...

Sorry ladies and gentlemen... those of you waiting for a US release of WRC for PS2 will have alot of waiting to do... I emailed SCEA (Sony America) regarding the subject and the refered me to the SCEE (Sony Europe). Here is the reply email I got...
Dear Mike
Thank you for your recent email regarding World Rally Championship.

Regrettably, I do not have any information as to a possible release of this game in the US.
Please keep an eye out in the official Playstation 2 magazines for possible future developments.

Subject: World Rally Championship Release info request.

To Whom It Concerns,

I tried contacting SCEA regarding this game and any future release in the US Market, they reported to me they had no information on the game except that SCEE is the listed publisher. Can you pass me any information about future releases of this game in markets outside the UK... I would like to try to compete in the WRC Challenge in Jan/Feb of 2002, but it appears this is closed to North American players.

Any information would be greatly appriciated...

Looks like it's time for a chip.
meebs 12-01-2001 11:08 AM

xbox?

Mr. Stevens... mmm hmm, how about those GameCube sales? :)
TimStevens 12-01-2001 12:41 PM

MS still hasn't announced official sales. Nintendo said they sold around 700,000 or so in the first weekend, whereas TRST numbers say it's around 600,000 or so in reality.

Besides, the important number is number shipped before Christmas, and I think Xbox will win on that front, with 125,000 a week coming up from Mexico.

Will the Gameshark let u play it?

I have a gameshark for my PS2, will it let me play the UK version of WRC 2001 challenge?

JGard 01-15-2002 11:42 AM

I've heard bad things about WRC2001. Like, the graphics are great, but the gameplay and physics aren't (again, hearsay).

I'm waiting for CM3. I love CM2, and 3 can only be better. And it sounds like it'll be out on all major systems (XBox, PS2, PC).
Scoobie Newbie 01-15-2002 12:19 PM

Yes but WHEN will it be out for PC.
TimStevens 01-15-2002 01:32 PM

Official release date is apparently August... but I'd be surprised if we saw it before the Fall... which is probably about when Sony will release WRC in the us :)

And as far as I know, you can't play PAL games with the GameShark, as it wouldn't convert the video signal, but I could be wrong!

-tim
roninscar 01-15-2002 03:52 PM

Nope, you are right, gameshark won't do a thing. It is all about the video out, in fact, you can't use gameshark on the PAL versions, you have to use Advanced Replay or something like that. NTSC is good in that the US and Japan are on the same standard, the PAL folks get rooked a lot more than we do on release stuff, but I am hoping it gets released here.

Cheers,
scotto

FYI in this months EVO There is a writeup on WRC - apparently being a bunch of math heads - they ended up knowing more about the car handling than prodrive ;-)

The game physics where so real no-one could drive the bloody thing so they toned it down a bit.

Cracking looking game - will pre-order it ;-)
jesse370 01-15-2002 08:02 PM

By the end of this year there will be THREE rally titles for the xbox. Rallispec, race of champions, and the Mcrae game. All with graphics that are far better than the ps2.
And about halo. The game is wicked. The ai is some of the best I've played against.
JamesC 01-16-2002 11:39 AM

Look here at PAL4U for conversion from PAL games to NTSC. It's not been certified with WRC yet but I've heard it works. If someone goes this route let me know!!

DuckWRX 01-16-2002 01:37 PM

I got a chance to play the WRC game while I was in the UK last month. It was only for about 5 minutes at a game store demo thought. I have CMR 2 for the PC and in the WRC game it seemed a lot more difficult to control the car. Like I said I only played it for 5 minutes so I don't know if it was that I was just used to the gameplay and controls of CMR2 ot that the WRC is more difficult. The graphics were really nice. My brother lives in the UK and plans on buying the game. I'll try and let you guy know what he thinks.
iceweazel 01-16-2002 11:16 PM

>you can't really tell their models from the real thing side by side...scary

As someone whos been both gaming since long before DOS
had rally games (and imported them _all_) and rallying since
the mid eighties, let me just say this:

Dude, get your eyes checked!

They might be cool, but the real thing is WAY better. Well pricier too, but thats not the point
