WRX Front Fenders, Indention for Sidemarkers? part 1

WRX Front Fenders, Indention for Sidemarkers?

This might be a little vague and/or confusion, but i'm not referring to the sidemarker lights next to the headlights, but i'm referring to the sidemarkers that go under the rear-view mirrors. We didn't get these lights in the US, but they are standard for WRXs in other countries. Anyhow, does anybody know if the actual fender has an indention already there for the placement of the lights? I guess what i'm saying is do you need JDM/Euro fenders to install the sidemarkers? Or will drilling holes achieve the same thing?

Anybody have a close up of the sidemarkers (factory installed)?

you have to drill
Rebellion 08-09-2002 10:32 AM

there's no indentation on any WRX... they're just drilled...
mvstype 08-09-2002 11:42 AM

All that is needed

two options, order fenders from japan or the UK or just cut holes into your fender.
Diversion 08-09-2002 10:24 PM

Ok does anybody have a clear close up shot of the fender on a JDM/Euro WRX so I know exactly where the hole needs to be drilled? Thanks.

Ahh, and the hole has a special shape to it, not round nor oval. Dremel time ir required. Adrian128 here sent me an outline (template of the hole) from his fenders in Australia. Another option I have is to go to the neighboring island and get them as they get the Euro version.

The thing I'm most concerned with is getting the wire harness cuz if I just hack into the front turn signal, they might blink out of sync with the factory ones.

I got a set of the original ambers and a set of the OEM clears (w/ gray plastic) and never installed them.

You interested in selling your extra set ? Hehe.

Can you send me the template you have for the sidemarkers? I'm planning on ordering them.. wonder who sells the harness? I'm sure there's a relay that's in line with the sidemarkers that makes it blink perfectly with the front blinkers.

Im in the same boat,,ive got the smoked sidemarkers just sitten in the box,,im real leary of drillen and dremeling the fenders.Im not too concerned if they lite up right away,, but getting them on would be a start!!
Ok,,who wants to be the crash dummy on this project ??? Leo???? lol your a moderator and all.

May I ask where you got the smoked lenses? Those are the ones i'm specifically looking for.

Jay,,TaiChi(Steve),,he posts in the Mid-Atlantic forum, good private vendor.Came in a set with JDM smoked front sidemarkers.I think Vivid sells this set too.Shoot Steve a pm,,good dude.
Rudy:D
Edit,,the rear sidemarkers like the fronts did not come with any wiring. They are setup fr the push in and turn type bulb holder.
I too would like a template!! Maybe ill go for it.Gotta figure you do have some wiggle room,,you cant look at both sides of the car at the same time to see if the y match up exactly;)
Diversion 08-11-2002 12:44 AM

Hmmm, wonder how hard it would be to order the harnesses for the sidemarkers then?

Jay
jagcars26 08-11-2002 11:16 PM

Ya know,,,,lookin at these,, just drillen holes, IMHO doesnt look like the answer. It seems to me like there should be indents for these,,just mounting them flush to the fender is gonna look like hell. They need to sit in some like the front sidemarkers.Maybe one of our Australian or European cohorts could chime in here.
I think after the hole is drilled you would need to roll under or in the metal so the lite doesnt sit flush.
Im thinken body shop.Ill check and get back to you guys.

That's why I need a close up shot the sidemarkers so I can see if the fenders were rolled for that indented look to match the front running lights.. Either that or i'm going to start making searches in Japanese junkyards for some MY02 fenders to order over here!

There is just a hole in the fender no indent! How do I know? When I saw the US rally car at the RIM rally in Palmdale CA it had the fenders from the JDM cars on it. It had been rolled so one side had the light on & the other just had a hole. A round with a notch just like Leonardo said.

I have also seen the Tommy Kiara car no indent.

I have a picture of the wheel and side maker somewhere.

Yeah that Tommy Kaira car doesn't have an indent.. well that's good, it's cheaper for me to drill my own holes and install them myself! Now I need to find someone who can order me the harnesses! Thanks for the pic.

Jay

Well,,,guess they sit flush then..Thanks fr the pic:D

No need to find a harness. You can make one yourself. It takes two wires, 1 ground & 1 live put some insulation around it connecters on the ends and your done. Just wire them in to the headlamp signal.

You can use the RS ones if you feel like buying some though.

But that won't make the light flash out of sync?

No. All you do is make a basic circuit. Light on light off.

The standard fenders look as if they have a hole with a notch in it and the rally car looks as if it's indented. Look at these pics.

Hmm that is strange the rally car has the indent, but not the Marketed WRX. Oh well, atleast those pics show me exactly where the sidemarker is supposed to go. A big hole i'll be drilling soon.

Are yours functional? If so, how did you wire them up?

Jay
subaruracerx 08-15-2002 01:39 PM

yes they are functional, spliced the wires on the signal bulb on the head lights
Diversion 08-15-2002 10:17 PM

Do they blink together in synch? Or out of synch?
