yet another location for aux. lights part 1

yet another location for aux. lights

If you have small aux lights you want to install, how about cutting a hole through the grille side pieces like this:

Just wanted to share the result here (It's not a photoshop; that's off my car). I've seen people post pics of where they put their aux lights, but haven't seen one on the grille side pieces like this. The aux passing lights I have there are PIAA002X. They're very small, about 2 inches diameter and 2 1/2 inches deep, which is why they fit on the grille side pieces.

:)

another angle:

just a little footnote:
Make sure you check with local laws when planning on using auxiliary lights. In California for example, I believe you can only run 4 lights at one time (not 4 pairs), and there are requirements on the beam pattern, etc.

wow

looks interesting.
is there a way you can post pics of the grill area closeup, with the lights on and one with them off? Did you wire them to your headlights, or your blinkers?

thanks!

Thanks :)

When the light is off, it looks puny and almost unnoticeable (because they're only 2 inches wide):

I'll see if I can get a closeup when they're on

They are wired separately. My interpretation of reading California's motor law says that you can have an auxiliary passing light alongside with regular driving lights. But you can also have an auxiliary driving light (I don't remember exactly whether it is called "driving") alongside with high beams. So, the way they are now, aux fogs and aux passing lights are wired separetely.

I suppose I could put some christmas tree stencil, fake snow, and red&green clear lens covers to match that theme

bahboy20, here's a closeup with all 4 pairs on:

wrxlvr is still working on them. Contact him to get information. He has a website with the progress pics of the prototypes, but I can't remember what it is.

I remember seeing that thread long ago. Imho, that is a much more ambitious goal, although of course it looks more "integrated" if done properly. My impresion was that the project was no longer continued. In any case, my initial reason for sharing my result was to point out one way to mount aux lights, although it is very limited to small lights. The gap between the grille side pieces and the headlight frame is only about 2 inches deep. So, I realize this is a very limited solution. But it works for me :)

reply to bahboy20's PM

I thought I'd reply bahboy20's PM here, to prevent answering the same questions to others :)

 so many questions :)

do you have a close up (real close up) of a straight on shot of the aux light?
Not at the moment, no. I'll see if I can get one this weekend. No guarantees tho.
did you drill or paint the grill side pieces first?
Drill first. Actually, it's a trial-and-error process. First, I made the mounting brackets for the lights and made sure I was happy with the fitment of the bracket. Then, I drill a small hole on the sides, about 1 cm wide, to make sure I find the center portion of the lights. I widened the hole using a 1 1/2 inch diameter cylindrical sander (this is not the exact name of the tool, but if you look around, you'll find what I'm talking about). Once the overall geometry of the hole is done, I sand the surface to even out the drill marks.
i really want to see the fit and finish of the drilled out holes.
Well, I suppose it's not relevant, since you can always make it fit really well and have a nice finish the more time you spend on it. Its just a matter of time. Mine came out ok, but not dress-up car show quality. I just don't have the time. I'll see if I can get a closeup pic.
what kinda drill did you use?
I used a regular steel drill bit (ACE Hardware brand, but just about any drill works on these soft ABS plastic). And then, there is the cylindrical 1 1/2 inch dia. sander (not sure what its called). I'll try to look up what they're called when I get home.
how much did the piass cost,
The 002X is quite pricey at about $140 new. There is a 001X, which is slightly larger, but instead of a mere 35W (the 002X), I believe it is 55W. The downside is that the 001X is slightly deeper, so you may need to drill a hole through the headlight frame (the black plastic part of the headlight that is hidden behind the grille sides).
and how did you mount them?
Since the 002X is small, I oriented them as if I am mounting them on the underside of the bumper, i.e. with the mounting bracket oriented towards the "ceiling". This is attached to a flat bracket with 2 bolts to each lights, and 2 bolts to each headlight frame. Again, I'll see if I can get pics of these this weekend.

Hey...what do you have covering the holes of your stock foglights?

It's a DIY job using Home Depot materials. Seeing the Erebuni fog trims gave me that idea.

looks good but do cops give you much trouble at all?

Thanks.
I'm almost sure that if all 4 pairs are lighted at the same time while on public roads & highways, they can stop me and issue a ticket. The max here is 2 pairs. At least in California. From reading a post a while back, I remember Subiegal said that in Washington, 2 pairs is also the max. I'd check the local laws before trying though.

But during inclement weather up the mountains & hills, it helps to have extra lighting. I've lighted 2 different pairs in different occasions (e.g. OEM low beam + PIAA002) and have not had cops say anything about it. I also made sure that the beam patterns do not light up upwards, which can hamper vision of drivers ahead of me (giving a valid reason for a cop to issue a ticket).

Thanks. I'm interested in how their effort turns out. It'll be interesting to see all the different options out there.

On a side note, this is the tool I used to make the holes on the side pieces (if anyone wants to attempt this):

Ace Hardware stores usually carry this. The one pictured is a "1-1/2 inch Drum Sander Kit" for wood, metal, fiberglass, and painted surfaces. Part # is 6085. Made by Abrasive Leaders & Innovators (ALi), Fairborn, OH 45324.

I assume you're talking about my DIY, not the erebuni's.

Hardware cost wise, you only need to spend about $20 for both sides (before painting cost). But time wise, I ended up spending about 5 hours trimming, cutting, and drilling. In retrospect, purchasing the erebuni trims are well worth it, especially since they don't cost that much, and you don't lose the potential use of the fog area as a cold air intake duct. :)

I basically used some part (I don't have the part number), which is intended for ventilation/hvac purpose (not sure exactly what), and trimmed it to fit. In Home Depot, I think it was in the plumbing / pipe aisle. I've seen it in 2 different Home Depots, so I imagine this should be easy to find. The trims are mounted the same way the Subaru foglight covers are, i.e. by two tabs on the top side, and by a bolt on the bottom, that attaches to a bracket. If I have time this weekend, I'll take pics.

Thanks. Yes, please do. I was interested in the progress when you initially tossed the idea, but thought that the project somehow got put aside indefinitely.
wrxlvr 10-28-2002 04:48 PM

Nope, it's just a really slow project. As you know, there isn't much room back there and finding good driving lights the size I needed was not easy. Couple that with a slacker for a partner and you get the long production times.

I agree. Have you considered drilling the plastic OEM headlight frame for additional clearance? I initially was interested in using Hella Micro DEs or their HID counterpart, but the depth of it required drilling the OEM headlight frames, which I was not ready to do. But If you sell them as a kit (modified OEM headlight + aux light + grille side piece), maybe that will work. Of course, that doesn't help price wise.
wrxlvr 10-28-2002 05:14 PM

It would be too expensive to do it that way. I also thought about doing a deposit and cutting out the stock pieces, but it would be too big of a pain, so we're just molding our own piece.

newsman, if you're referring to the erebuni's, my guess is they don't come painted. If you're referring to my (Home Depot) DIY, they came unpainted, untrimmed, undrilled, and unavailable for purchase :p
