zero to top speed

Hey guys I'm hoping that someone can help me out with the length of time it takes to go from zero to the limited top speed 155mph of the 2004 Sti and what's the top speed of the 2004 Sti without the limiter. I did search but the answer wasn't there. I have a friend with a Volvo S60R that believes the Sti takes approx 33 sec. to reach top speed (155) and the Volvo "R" takes 31 secs. to reach the same speed thanks.

I found the Sti info. I only need the Volvo info. I don't expect anyone here to have that thanks.

can you share the STi info?

So, I guess aero and last gear ratio make the difference from 100 on up.

Aero dominates weight at that speed surely. Really, over 80-100, weight isn't really a factor, within reason. Don't under estimate that Volvo, its one of my favorite non-subarus, its a beast....

The 2004 Model STi is speed limited to 147mph from the factory. When my car was stock, it took 33-35sec to reach 140mph right at 1 mile. The VF-39 is starting to run out of juice right around there, especially with the cats on board. With the aero load increasing, it's slow going at that point. Never had enough track to test the limiter with a stock car.

Starting from a dig, the STi would be way ahead by the time both cars reached 140 mph. That's the point where the Volvo would start catching up a little bit. If your friend thinks he can beat an STi in a race because he can reach 150 faster, he is wrong. All the way up to 140, the STi was walking away.

No, actually after 100, the Volvo starts closing the gap, not 140. Its just not until 140 that the STi falls behind, but it was getting reeled in at EDIT, some point over the 100 mark.
The Volvo is accelerating harder at 100 than the STi is (was)

So even though the STi is travelling at a faster speed as the Volvo reaches 100mph, the Volvo is gaining on the STi?
Set your cruise at 65mph and have someone else set theirs at 70mph and see if you can catch them. If you can, I'll give you one billion dollars. :)

I should have reworded that. You're right, it may never actually catch the Sti, distance wise. But it accelerates faster at 100 than the Sti does.
It takes the STi 3.39 seconds to go from 100-110, the Volvo takes 2.8. Its only a matter of time until it starts to overtake the Suby....If they don't run into their top speed first.
Start the roll on from 100 and guess who wins...a roll from 70, I bet the Volvo reels it in before its over too.
But your right, the STi has too big of a lead from a standing start to ever catch it.

So with the figures posted how many miles would it take for the Volvo to catch and pass the STi,can someone do the math thanks
| Cloaked | 11-12-2005 03:24 AM |
Here's what I found
Note: 150mph = 220 ft/s, 100mph = 146.667 ft/s
a(R) = (220 ft/s - 146.667 ft/s)/17.5s = 4.194 ft/s^2
a(STi) = (220 - 146.667)/20.95s = 3.5036 ft/s^2
So, for the R after 17.5s travels:
dist(R) = (220+146.66)/2 * 17.5s = 3208.3 ft
and at this time "t", the Sti is going about:
Vf(Sti) = 146.667ft/s + (3.5036ft/s^2*17.5s) = 207.98 ft/s = 141.8 mph
...where the R is going 150 mph
And so the STi has only traveled:
dist(Sti) = (207.98^2 - 146.667^2)/(2*3.5036) = 3103.2 ft
The difference being: 3208.3 - 3103.2 ~= 105 ft at 17.5 sec
Note: 150mph = 220 ft/s, 100mph = 146.667 ft/s
a(R) = (220 ft/s - 146.667 ft/s)/17.5s = 4.194 ft/s^2
a(STi) = (220 - 146.667)/20.95s = 3.5036 ft/s^2

You're assuming linear acceleration. If I'm not mistaken, you would need to plot the two curves (velocity vs. time). The area under the curve up to a certain time will be the distance traveled up to that time. Since there is no top speed published for the volvo, there is no telling when (if ever) it will catch the STi if they both start from 0 mph at the same point. Yes, you are correct...the volvo will win from a 100 mph roll...
Is that really useful?
Where'd you get the 150mph time for the volvo? Is it published elsewhere?

[QUOTE]Yes retard...look at the #'s. See the gap between the two cars. At 100, look at the gap, then a 110, look at the gap. IT GOT SMALLER. The Volvo went 100-110 FASTER THAN THE STi.
You're an idiot. It takes the STi 3.39 seconds to go from 100-110, the Volvo
takes 2.8. SEE THAT, the Volvo is accelerating FASTER. AT 100 THE VOLVO IS OUTRUNNING THE STI. ITS CLOSING THE GAP
The STI is still ahead, but the Volvo is closing, its not rocket science. Do
your roll on race from 100, and Volvo will win.

Dont forget the effect of the Impreza's aerodynamics, its like trying to throw an opened umbrella tied to a rock upwind in a very heavy storm LOL
Things like the scoop, spoiler and really butch front end all add up, and at speeds they add up fast.
So much so, that my Impreza does 3 mhp more (Gps measurements) with small things like mirrors folded in.

Yea acceleration isn't linear. Here's what I did that is very close to the truth. Plugging in the times and speeds of both vehicles on a graph the calculator came up with a best fit natural logarithm curve that is pretty accurate +- several mph.
The equations:
STI: y=36.8556ln(X) + 7.23194
VOLVO: y=40.068ln(X) - 3.9534
Taking the integral of STI equation from 12.49(100mph) to 50.05(150mph) we get 4943.09(dont feel like doing units on that)
Integral of Volvo from 13.9(100mph) to 47(approx 150mph) we get 4340.4
So from a roll 100mph to 150mph STI > Volvo
Taking integrals again from a dig we get 5765.68 for STI and 5225.8 for Volvo
Again STI > Volvo
There are of course slight errors in the above calculations due to there being no specific function for either velocity curve but they're close enough for us to see that the STI owns the Volvo either way.
