Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 3

D Money 01-30-2009 12:18 PM
because you fail at counting?
:D
I editted the post. Originally I had just the one teaser shot, but then posted the stock photos so you would see how much work went into it. I believe it's a 40hr job to do the engine bay...
i love it i can appreciate this especially the way my motor looks lol
haha you better *****. Where is my hood dampers. If you ignore my text ever again im fighting you.
WAYGONE1 01-30-2009 12:21 PM

Nice work reminds me of the VW's I used to do, sounds like alot of shaving and tucking, no abs, no ps, but 600whp? NASA show car?
05Scooby 01-30-2009 12:22 PM
Why did someone have to bump this thread? Now Im going to be worried about tucking wires instead of just getting my car back together haha

whats wrong with having a super clean 400-500awhp engine bay AND have it be your daily driver?
Exactly.

Race car! With nice parts to make it look nice.

There is nothing about this engine bay that will not scream fast. Seriously, its built to be badass at everything. Looks, jdm, hellaflush, low, and fast. REAL fast.

Thats hot, what classes do you plan on competing in? Lots of NASA classes, and events on that side of the country. Been a few years since trucking has taken me that far east, nice place tho lots of sweet tracks.

dRAG or road coarse racing?

You need to snap more pics of this thing! Please?

Is that metal filler (welding), or bondo?

They made metal plates for each side of the engine bay. All the recessed bumps were cut out and re-welded in, all holes were first welded. The body filler is just to smooth the final welds and body work, not used as a filler.

No more pics. I'm keeping the rest secret, just thought this was a good teaser.

My bad.

I would look pretty dumb on the track with a daily driver hyundai elantra. I haven't driven this car in like a year and a half.

Well one things for sure, you won't be able to get around the track being "helladumped and hellaflush".

Labor, tuning, fabrication was all sponsored, so what are you talking about? I've got 25k just in drivetrain PARTS. ;)

Then if you want to talk about jdm parts, wheels, interior, paint, body work, etc...

Sure you do the work yourself, that's why your **** looks terrible. My work is done by professionals. I want to see you show me a nicer engine bay when it's all said and done.

MixeD_MenacE 01-30-2009 03:17 PM

Wow D, the car is looking real good. It's inspired me to rethink the bay set up on the RSTi. Was looking to pull the motor out and redo the 2 toned bay, but after seeing a serious tuck/shave on a subaru, outside of the Aussies, I really like what you've done.

An ABS tuck would have been redic, but you just yanked the whole thing out! Looking forward to seeing the final results.

Way to think outside the standard NASIOC box.

As you can see, it's alot of work. First welding all the holes, getting rid of the bumps, brackets, battery tray, all that stuff. Then doing body work, smoothing with body filler, sanding, etc. Making sure it's smooth and not odd shaped is probably the hardest...

Good thing it's getting done by a professional that builds hot-rods and custom cars.

Jeff, if you're keeping the car gold, paint the bay gold again. I would definately re-do the body work on the bay. I think Danny did a terrible job as it looks sloppy and not smooth. You're a DIY'er, im sure you could handle it in a week or so. Get rid of those bumps and holes, smooth everything out, etc.

I would get rid of the boost selonoid on the passenger shock tower, relocate it somewhere. Maybe a reverse mount pedal assembly to delete the brake boost and master cylinders. They're soooo expensive though!

I don't want to drop $$$ on painting the whole car, and the exterior of the car is great. Danny didn't remove the engine when they painted it so thats why it looks that way in certain places and why its white behind the turbo. The wheel arches and Shock towers look great in person its all the tight and buried places that look sloppy.

If I had the money to burn I would do it all over I would ditch the Cwest front bumper and sideskirts. Paint it white, Stock front bumper with fog covers/Lip and a rear diffuser.

Im a DIY for mechanical stuff, but automotive painting scares me haha :D

Keep us posted on your setup!
That would be so bad ass! Any ideas where to put the solinoid stuff?
Well, I know a certain someone who is doing this as we speak. I will keep them un-named for now. He's taught me everything I know about it so if he wants to chime in, i'll let him.

You could get tilton or wilwood pedal assembly. Both come with the master cylinders on the brake pedals, OR you could get seperate billet resoviors for your fluid and mount that anywhere.

Looks interesting so far dude. I'm definitely waiting to see how this works out. Glad you got rid of all the stupid S8IT like ABS, PS, and washer fluid. If only I could've convinced a certain someone to do that with their flipped mani... oh well. . But I think you should hurry and finish so I know what size snail to put on the mach.... *devil*
mannslayer 01-30-2009 08:21 PM

the only way to do a PROPER tuck is to run a wire in standalone like an autronic or motec. the stock harness can only be tucked so much. and having fuses in the fender, while it looks "good", what good is it if you blow a fuse?

function > form.

The fuse box will be fully functional in the fender. We will have it mounted and water proofed so that I can access it by pulling the fender liner back, or by taking off the wheel. No biggie, i've never blown a fuse ever.

I went with what could make me the most power and was easiest to tune, and that's Hydra v2.6

You used to.... Now it sits in the garage!! lol wink wink. I'm not worried about handing you a big bottle of whoop ass tho... Plus, if it looked like you could win, I'd just short something and blow your fuses... Then what:p:diaf:

Angry Toaster 01-31-2009 01:35 AM

I'm sure it's going to look nice. D has a good eye for detail.

The "tucked" look of a real race prepped car is just a byproduct of not needing all that extra stuff. The only major caveat of D's build is removing the power steering. If this car is going on any track that isn't a straight line, it's going to need power steering.

Keep up the good work.

I know I know. You can hardly even see the pump, no worries. Plus it's on top of the engine. To me, the resovior bothers me more because I wanted both sides cleaned up and nothing over there.
is there any report of the bondo cracking/splitting due to stress?
I guess if you use cheap autozone body filler and that's ALL you use. Again this was all metal work and the body filler was applied very thin and just used to give it that smooth look.

 comparing hydra to the likes of autronic and motec... their not even in the same league. you've got the best of everything, why skimp on engine control?

unless you're sponsored by hydra or one of their suppliers it doesnt seem too late to make a switch, and it doesnt seem like cash is much of an issue. you'll have much better engine management and a much cleaner engine bay.

D -
did you ever look into the pros/cons of having sheet metal or aluminum "covers" made and then welded in over the existing panels?

then it would be "perfect" w/ no filler.

just curious. I have no actual practical experience w/ this, and I am not going to pretend to be an internet expert.
but it strikes me as a viable option.
