Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 15

xxscaxx 04-03-2011 11:57 PM

here you go D..let me know how i did

I only got to finish my driver brake line, and I was a retard and was showing my bro how to use the flaring tool and i forgot to put the goddamn tube nut on :unamused: thank god I had some slack in the line and made it longer than i needed, or i would have been pretty pissed!

i also bought some rubber grommets for the line, but they ended up being too tight to squeeze in after i fed the line through. For some reason i only made a hole slightly bigger than the line. I ended up putting some shrink tube there and wire loom around it to protect the lines from rubbing against the metal. I know now for my other lines to make a bigger hole.
D Money 04-04-2011 12:39 AM

PERFECT FLARES! Good **** bro.

Those 45 degree double flares are the hardest too! 37 degree single flare and bubble flare is easy!

Make sure your tube nuts have beveled edges and aren't flat. The flat ones are for bubble flares and if you use them with the 45 degree double flare will get crushed. I can't tell by the pictures. lol
xxscaxx 04-04-2011 08:52 AM

Haha thanks dude, yeah this hydraulic flare tool is awesome. I'm glad I don't have to worry about the flares since that seems to be the biggest concern with moving the abs.

Those tube nuts are the ones you posted in this thread a few pages back from anplumbing. So they better be the right ones
D Money 04-04-2011 11:22 AM

They're wrong! I found out the hardway after I ordered them. Originally that part number was for a inverted flare. When I got mine I called and said the edge is flat and he said they're for bubble flare only. :(

You can get them from inline tube, but they're $2.00 each.
xxscaxx 04-04-2011 12:02 PM

I'm going to compare them when i get home to the ones on my stock lines, but that sucks ******* if thats true. I will have to redo my line i just put in! damn you D  at least i only did one line so far.. and i had to pay 13 dollar shipping on those bitches! (for 6 bucks worth of tube nuts :unamused:)

can you link me to the correct ones? so i need ones that arent for bubble flare? I think i am just going to get them locally. I dont wan't to wait for the shipping and i need to get my lines done.
D Money 04-04-2011 04:52 PM

dude im so sorry! I found out last week when I had to order one for myself. :(

Bubble flare has a flat edge. Inverted double flare has a bevel for the flare to seal on.

see the difference?

xxscaxx 04-04-2011 11:10 PM

yep i noticed right away when i looked at the stock tube nuts and the ones i ordered.

its all good man, i'm just happy i only finished one line

I'm just going to reuse my stock ones for now and i'll grab some at the store for a few extra. Plus i need at least one because i mauled one of them trying to get it off.

I saw this when you posted in the clean engine bay thread, it looks amazing! I wish i had a chance to do a full shave and everything like this, but I will have to live with what I have  Can't wait to see the motor in that beast!

My bay looks ugly as **** right now because its all beat up, but when my friend paints it (hopefully this weekend) i will post some photos up.
Token-Negro 04-06-2011 10:00 PM

D, why did you use adapters all over the place? you could have went directly into everything with the right flare and tube nut, seems you added one more place to have a leak on every joint.

Yes our cars use inverted flare not bubble flare, looks like you guys have figured that out.

The tube nuts subaru uses are m10x1.0 and you can even do a banjo to 3an for the tight spaces if you have to run 3an all over the place.

Example of banjo picture.

Token-Negro 04-06-2011 10:04 PM
NO! You cannot use a tube cutter as you will NEVER get the lines to flare. You need to use a cut off wheel. Also, make sure your flare tool is setup for 45 degree SAE double flares and CAN FLARE STAINLESS STEEL. I'll guarnatee your tool will not flare, but rather push it to the side. I bought the special flare tool for stainless line for 37 degree flares on the -an fittings, however for the one I needed the 45 degree double flare on the tool wouldn't work. I had to take it to my local fitting store to have him do it, because I wasn't about to pay another $125+ for a flare tool. haha
Buy the mastercool hydro unit it does all the flares

Token-Negro 04-06-2011 10:09 PM

BTW if ur not going to use rivets at least use rivet nuts, so you can use lock tite, self tapper screws in sheet metal only hold for so long, they like to back out.
Token-Negro 04-06-2011 10:17 PM
ah gotcha! Thats a good idea to use the rubber gromments for each line and run them separate. I just didn't want to make more holes than i already have

what did your friend use to cut your ss lines? I ended up buying the stainless lines haha but now I was told not to use a tube cutter...and the one thing i don't have tool wise is a vice so i can't use a hacksaw to cut the lines. i don't know what to do now!
High tooth hack saw blade will work perfect for the SS just cut straight, make sure you have a debur tool and something to check your cut. If its not square a file and a vice you sould be able to square it up, the trick is to not go back and forth very fast, as that puts heat into the end, with SS when you heat it up you WORK harden the area thats what makes it hard to flare!

the flare tool you posted is the one sitting in my garage :D

yeah i suck apparently at cutting straight with the hacksaw haha, i dont have a vice, but i ended up lightly sanding it down and making it straight. I havent had an issue yet (I think at least). thanks for the informal post. i posted a pic of my flare on the previous page. does it look like i did ok to you?

i asked this before but what did you guys do with the 8 gauge power wire coming out of the fuse box? just want to see where people are routing it. I was thinking of going up along the fender wire loom and then going through the wiper cowl and to the back of the starter. any other ideas please let me know.

also, where did you guys run the passenger side main harness wires? (the two big plugs) how did you run that part of the harness? to make it easy for my tuner i'm going to wait on the harness tucking part. I will do it when i get my car back together and assembled.

also, what about the harness above the ac line? i know most of you probably pulled the harness back through the firewall or something along that lines, but i think i am just going to go up and through the wiper cowl too with that line, and then run the two wires out for the master cylinder and starter either out a hole and back into the bay from the cowl area or maybe separate them from that wire loom and keep them within the bay and just try to hide them.

If i'm not making sense, i will take pictures haha.

My friend is coming by tomorrow that welds and i think he is going to weld all the holes shut for me and do some sheet metal work :banana:

I didn't want to use the factory style m10x1.0 tube nuts. I decided to do my brake lines like hot-rod builders/honda owners do theirs. It's more expensive this way however to me it looks better. You know I am all about the "bling" but that's not to say my brake lines aren't up to spec. Yes, I did add more connections however with them all tight there wasn't any leaks. The fittings are rated to around 9,000 psi so I know for sure I won't have any issues with the fittings themselves as brakes will never see that kind of pressure.

Also, nitrous hardlines use these same types of -an tube nuts/sleeves and they don't have any issues either.

I do get your point and yes it would have been more simple, but i'm never simple. haha As for the brake flare tool, I did buy a really nice one for 37 degree flares for the -an fittings. I just didn't want to buy one for 45 degree double flare for 1 line so I had my fitting store do it for me.

Also, I did think about the banjo like you showed but in the end decided against it because I thought it wouldn't look good. I did do that exact banjo on the custom clutch line I made. Now after seeing what you posted, I wish I did it on my brake master also. :(

On the Celaru I ran all the wiring over the tranny and when into the firewall just under the heater core lines. I took the wiring from the fuse box and separated it is far as I could to turn it the other way befoer I extended it. Same this with the 4ga wire I ran from the batt to the starter but I had that poke through the firewall under the Brake Booster.

On the Lego I ran all the wiring over tranny and tucked it up in the tranny tunnel and came out just behind my shifter were the fuse box, batt, and starter wires went to the trunk. The engine Pigtails went into the fire wall in the stock location because the intercooler piping covered it up pretty good so I saw no reason to move it. Just removed the stock bulky loom and redid it so it was much smaller and less noticeable.

You should make all pigtails that are needed for anything easily accessible and try to consolidate them all in one spot. 90% of your wiring you can hid and forgot about until there is a problem. But IMO nothing that is needed on a regular basis should be put in a place that is a PITA to access. Your car needs to be easy to work on and efficient. You should also be able to remove your wiring in a semi easy way if you ever do need to trace back your work since your cutting and splicing. It also need to make some form of sense if you ever take your car into a shop or if you sell the car. Having to pay extra because the shop has to spend more time just figuring out what you did it a waste. I took a print out of the stock diagram that shows the stock wiring of my car and imported it into paint and re-did it to how I have it now so I others and I could reference to it if need be. Form is important to me and I love a clean setup but if it takes you an hour to do something that should take 15mins then your not doing it right. Hiding important wires in the cowl so you have to pull your wipers and cowl every time you need to access them is dumb. Instead mount them under your pitch mount or if you have a top mount put them in the little pocket behind your strut tower and firewall and make a nice cover.
