A/C begins to stink, what to do? part 1

A/C begins to stink, what to do?
Not sure if I post in correct forum, but my question is:

My air conditioning begins to stink, what kind of treatment can eliminate 99.99% of the bad smell from mold, dirt, etc?

I had been using Lysol on my previous car to kill the mold, which is kinda effective, but bad smell comes back after like 1000 miles x_x

Consider my car has been driven for 45,000 miles before the A/C begins to stink, I think I was doing my best to keep it clean enuff....

Dealerships advertise some sort of total "A/C shampooing/deodor" treatment, how good is it? Anyone tried? It's not cheap though...

not a solution, but more about prevention.

i remember a while back someone told me if youre going to turn off the AC, let the fan run for a bit after to get the moisture out of the system. never had a car w/ stinky AC. :)

Also, don't leave it on recirc all the time.

There are some tips here:

Check to see if the AC drain hose is clogged. A clog can cause water to sit in the system and begin to mold. The cleaning stuff the dealership offers is designed to clear this mold. It is a foaming spray that is put into the air intake and covers everything with an anitbacterial agent. I had it done once on a car and it made a big difference. You may be able to buy the stuff at your local parts store.

what about a brand new in cabin air filter? i heard that helps.
dcwrx2 08-03-2006 04:17 PM

ctechnik and picard, I was doing the exact same guidelines as to keep my A/C smell fresh, but...prevention is prevention, it is not 100% stink-proof. If I wasn't following those guidelines, my A/C would become stinky since 20k miles ago, heh.. ;)
what about a brand new in cabin air filter? i heard that helps.
Cabin filter helps trapping the pollutants like allergens, dust, etc...but it doesn't help much fighting the mold...

Like... under the glovebox of the passenger side (for re-circ), or below the windshield wipers (for non re-circ)? etc etc?

Our cars have A/C??? oh yeah thats right im in AK
LathanM 08-03-2006 04:37 PM

The dealer will squirt it in under the winshield wipers with the vent set to non re-circ. Depending on the design of the evaporator box they will us a long snorkle to get the spray all the way into the box. They let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes then the run the fan on high to blow out any residue. If the system really dirty they may do this a couple of times.

If they are doing a real through job the will also spray the stuff in all the vents. Since Subbies have a replaceable cabin fitlers they will likely spray it directly into the blower.

They will also back flush the evaporator tray by using compressed air to make sure there isn't anything stuck in it.

Well, A/C doesn't necessary mean I want it cold. It is useful for me as a defroster on the windshield when I get off to work in the early cold morning. ;)

usually right after i run the ac, i'll set the fan to full blast, turn off recirc and let it sit for a minute. so far it's been working to avoid getting that musty smell.
gotsol 08-03-2006 04:45 PM

B&G makes it it is called Fridgie Free (foam) and a spray Fridgie Fresh

there's an old man trick...open all the window, and turn on the heater on for 10 minutes(while engine is hot), and let the warmer air will kill the stink smell instantly...but make sure you don't sit it the car while the heat blowing out!! ;) I did that once in a while to kill the stink smell...I hope it helps...

Basically, I have tried all but the evaporator foamy spray methods listed here. Looks like I really need to try those foamy spray and see it does the job well...

Fridgie Free, Frigi Fresh, similar.... Did anyone actually try these products on their cars and able to share us the results?

we use frigi fresh at the shop i work at...also volvo dealer uses it up here...it works!
dcwrx2 08-04-2006 07:44 PM

Great, I may give it a try then! Is it difficult to use? What kind of special tools I need, such as compress air hose and t-connector like the others?!
dbarnblatt 08-05-2006 12:13 PM
Cabin filter helps trapping the pollutants like allergens, dust, etc...but it doesn't help much fighting the mold...
Actually it does help... if the filter is packed with material then it will lessen the airflow. Also moisture will get trapped in the filter as well... a great place for mold to grow. Check the drainage and replace the filter.
