Clear Side Markers (revisited)

Please excuse me for asking this age old question, because I know it has been asked and answered before, but I'm tired of trying to find the post I saw yesterday, which had the information I wanted.
I want to replace the stock orange side markers on my '03 2.5 RS with the clear Euro-Style markers. I want a set that uses the stock bulb socket and I don't really want the bargain basement assortment, unless they look good and fit properly.
Does anybody know where I can purchase a set of these?
Thanks,
_Scott

You could buy the STI lights.
Subydude has the genuine JDM ones for $145 a set, including the fronts.

If not there are tons of companys that sell the clear ones.

Scott,
I have the www.procarparts.com clear side markers and could not be more pleased. Fitment is excellent, they use stock plugs with included orange bulbs.
$25.95 + shipping
http://www.procarparts.com/store/displaydetails.cfm?pid=DCBL-02IMPZA
IMO JDM's are WAY over priced and aren't as good looking (too white) especially on a silver car.
Checkout page 3 on the official "Silver" thread in the gallery. PhatheadWRX has a couple of good photos of them.

jagcars26,
A: Calling product A. junk while trying to sell product B. doesn't qualify as an honest opinion.
B: Calling them junk implies that there are something wrong with them . Mine
and others experiences have been that fitment is excellent, as good as stock IMO. If you have had a different experience please let us know. If it's the "clearer" look your not fond of than certainly to each his own.
PhillyScott and anyone else that is in the market for clear markers,
I too read through every post with "clear side marker" in it before my purchase. I came to the conclusion that there are two choices:
1. JDM's ( subydude, etc.)
- JDM look (less clear)
- comes with side repeater
- $145 shipped from subydude.com
2. Procarparts.com euro diamond
clear side lights
- clearer
- $25.95 = shipping
There are certainly other vendors that sell clear markers but as you may have read in other threads, fitment seems to be an issue. I am NOT saying that all other vendors are selling inferior side markers but in my search I found it difficult to come to any conclusions about fitment of any other vendors side markers other than the vendors posted above.
Now, which one should you choose?
That of course is entirely up to you. If you NEED to have the authentic JDM look than go for it but keep in mind the side repeaters require drilling holes in the sides of your fenders... me 'neither . You don't have put the side repeaters on of course but I hope you can justify spending $145 ( nothing wrong with subydude's prices BTW. He's a great vendor It's just the going rate for those pieces) for a couple pieces of plastic. I couldn't.

Well jpm, thank you for the update on the particular lites sold by procarparts.Im very happy that you are so pleased with your purchase. But i think if you had done a thorough search you would have seen that last year around this time and before many of our regular vendors were selling lites very similar to what you mention. The results were rather disapointing,,ie:extemely loose or poor fit,, they melted, they turned orange, wire it in your self(no plug and play)and i believe some may have even almost caught fire turning the lamp to black and burning your allready hacked wiring. Many vendors had many returns and one even recalled all that he sold which was considerable. And let me add this,Procarparts has been making replica parts fr many years,I purchased from Procarparts some bumper lites fr my old RS a few years back, very reasonable too.Result, poor fit, white clear look that matches nothing in the automotive market other then Alteeza''s and just poor overall quality. If thats what you want,so be it.But your tyring to compare apples to oranges here and it just wont fly.
Bottom line ,,"you get what you pay for"
Im glad that procarparts has finally come up with a lite that works fr $29.95 but in IMHO they look like $29.95.,,,As far as your A.above is concerned, read the title to the thread and the guys question,he states he really doesnt want the cheap lites hence my response.
And to end this debate,suby_ dudes a great vendor, ive bought many things from him in the past and will continue to do so but,his price is not the only one out there fr the JDM set,I certainly didnt pay $145 fr my set,,,hell,,Vivid wants $169 I think. When you have thoroughly done your homework get back to me with more good info.
Thanks
Rudy;)

Look Rudy,
I'm trying to assist people with making a decision on two products that we can safely say FIT.
PhillyScott had written that he didn't want to go cheap UNLESS they fit AND looked good. Well the procarparts ones (bargain basement assortment) fit. As far as looks, it is entirely up to him. You and I have different opinions on them I'm sure he does too.
As far as the apples to oranges... I read about all that as I stated before but everything you posted before that statement has nothing to do with the procarparts pieces I am referring to.
One (several in this case) vendors ***** for 30 bucks doesn't always mean everyone is selling ***** for 30 bucks.
***** in this case means poor fitment, catching on fire, etc. Looks again are subjective.
Rudy, if I'm coming across as beating this topic to death or riding you that is not my intention. I am just trying let folks know that if you want a clear side marker that fits and works as advertised than here are two good options. one just happens to cost 3,4,5 times as much.
:)

It all boils down to what you want. The ones from subydude aren't really clear, they are a smoky/hazy/filmy sort of white. The Procarparts ones are clear, use the stock wiring, include an orange bulb, and fit great (mine fit as well as stock).
Its your decision, I'm sure pics have been posted of both.

Thanks to all who have replied, especially jpm and jagcars26!
But let me ask you a few more questions on this subject!
1) What does JDM mean?
2) jpm, you say the JDM "side repeaters" reqiure drilling holes in the fender. Where would they be installed? I'm just curious really, because I wouldn't want to drill any holes in my new Subie!
3) And if I decide to go with the expensive JDM markers, would they fit in to the slots where the stock orange markers are? Would they accept the stock bulb socket?
Thanks again,
_Scott

JDM = japanese domestic market
USDM = U.S. domestic market
EDM = european domestic market.
It's the stuff that come stock with the car. In japan they have different side markers and a repeater, the US doesnt.
The side repeaters are those small blinkers that are a foot or so under the side mirrors. They REPEAT the blinker in the front, so people can see your signal better from the side. Very cool but you have to drill into the fender just in front of the door seam. I wouldn't do it, only if i knew a REALLY good body shop.
I too would like to know about the JDM side markers. They would fit in where the orange markers fit now, but i don't know about the lights. I've read that you have to drill the back of the marker b/c it's really just a reflector... I'm planning on wiring my side markers to be blinkers when i put my morettes in. Anyone have info on this?

The JDM front sidemarkers fit exactly as stock, takes the same socket and bulb.It is a duplicate of the stock with the exception of the color. No drilling involved, one comes out,one goes in.
The rear sidemarkers require drilling, they are very similar to the ones on the MY98-01 RS.
Hope that helps

So who has actually performed the side repeater mod?
How much drilling is involved?
Any pictures? I tried searching to no avail.

I bought the JDM set from Subydude last summer and they fit great. As stated before, they are not transparent, they are more milky hazzy white. But the side markers are indeed just reflectors with no lights inside them. If you look at the back of them carefully with a light, you can see the outprint of where the hole "should" have been. I just used a dremel and followed the imprint to replicate the hole and then used the stock wiring and harness. It fits perfectly and the fit is much better than the cheap transparent ones i had b4 that. I didnt use the side repeaters, but i was able to sell them for 55$ on ebay, so it paid for part of the sidemarkers.

Sorry for the stupid question, but what is a dremel?
I assume it's a type of drill bit. Is there a particular size I need?
Why didn't you install the side repeater lights?
What is actually involved in the installation- Drilling a hole in the fender, I assume? And wiring?
Has anyone out there done this?
TIA

I have installed the side repeaters on my car. They are not the JDM ones that come with the set, but aside from the shape of the hole to be cut, installation would be similar. Mine are the small square ones from an Audi A4, smoked to match my other lights. I would not recomend doing this if you are not completely confident in your mechanical abilities. You should also be aware that if you screw up badly, you will either have to buy new fenders or drive around with funny shaped holes in yours. You could get some sort of emblem to cover them up I suppose. Here you go.
Step #1 (Most important and most difficult)
Somehow convince yourself that drilling and cutting up the fenders on your car is no problem and that you have big enough cajones to finish this project. I had already cut a hole in my hood with a Sawzall (I wanted a functional hood scoop), so this was easy in comparison.
Step #2
Measure very precisely where you want your light to be. I made a template out of cardboard so the lights on both sides would be even.
Step #3
Use a drill, Dremel, or whatever works best for you to cut the appropriate shaped hole in your fender. Mine was a circle with a notch on top of it and a longer slit on the bottom. For drilling the initial hole I suggest buying a Unibit, which makes nice clean holes without distorting the sheet metal. You can find them at Home Depot or Lowe's. Start small, and slowly cut the hole bigger until it is the right size and shape. Keep test fitting the light after every enlargement until it fits snugly.
Step #4
When you have the hole finished, use some paint to cover the bare metal around the edge of the hole. Let the paint dry while you do the wiring.
Step #5
You will need a positive and negative extension from your front turn signal bulbs. Run the two wires per side through the large grommet that goes into the fenderwell. If you want this to be easier, jack up the front of the car and remove the wheels. Take off the fender liner so you can run the wires to the hole you made. Make the wires long enough so you can pull out the lights to change bulbs if they burn out. Hook up the wires to bulb socket. Test the lights and make sure they work with the turn signals.
Step #6
Install the bulb socket in the light if they are separate (mine weren't). Then install the sidemarker light to the fender. I'm not sure how the JDM ones stay on, but mine just had a plastic clip that snaps into the notch on the top of the hole. Most universal ones I've seen use two screws to hold the back to the fender and then the lens just snaps on over it. If your lights don't use a gasket around them, you can use some clear silicone to seal them, although this might make them harder to remove later. Then put everything else back together.
Step #7
Stand back, admire your work, and promise yourself you will never attempt to do any sort of body work on your car again.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. If you would like to see the results on my car, just e-mail me and I will send you some pics. Good luck and don't screw up.

ps for suparex - A dremel is a small rotary power tool that is good for cutting odd shapes. It can also be used to sand, grind, drill, buff, polish, engrave, and whatever else you can think of to do with it. It's very handy, I would be lost without mine.

Measure 3 times and cut once or take it to a body shop and have them cut the holes...

I bought the kit and did not have the guts to cut the fenders. Shortly after that I was it in a parking lot and the body shop did the install free when they fixed the fender for me.

I think the finished product is well worth it.

Obviuosly there are two different types of JDMs out there.Either way mine are still for sale $90 bucks shipped;)

Hey PhillyScott, my .02...

Just got the replica clear side markers (Procarparts, Gruppe-S, etc), and frankly I'm a little disappointed in them, EVEN IF they only cost $25 shipped.
1- Not even the same shape. So do not conform to body indentation correctly.
2- From above notes, makes sense to use Factory wiring harness, right? It doesn't fit properly and must do some additional 'engineering' to fit them in place.
I guess it depends on what your expectations are. I expected OEM fit, if not quality, and didn't get it (I guess I should have read this thread first...). The opaque JDM side markers would be more to my liking, HOWEVER...
I do like the crystal clear lenses. I lightly sprayed high temp silver paint on the amber bulbs and like the clean look on my Alpine White wagon (plus they shine bright amber when on). But I am definitely disappointed in the quality and extra work it took to get them to fit correctly.
Like I said, just my .02.

But I am definitely disappointed in the quality and extra work it took to get them to fit correctly.

thanks to ebay, i got myself a pair of CLEAR side markers from the seller: redlinezone.com
19.99 + shipping and i coudln't be happier.

Easy install, factory fit, uses stock bulb and harness without any "engineering" needed. Only thing next is getting rid of the orange bulb. contemplating the 'DIY' silver paint job. and my car is a Silver '03 sedan. couldn't look much better.

There are several "clear corner markers" on the market. The "diamond clear corners"(on top of picture) available on Ebay come with orange lights but the lights do not come out and you have to splice the wires to install them. The ones below in the picture are from www.importvision.com I like the way they match the lines on the headlights better than the diamond clears. They do not come with bulbs but the stock bulbs fit into them and you can buy orange bulbs.
