okay so.... Who here has done an 05 STi Shifter Trim Ring install on a non STi?

Curious.
has anyone done this? with photos?
I mean... I know I've sold the trim ring kit
but, for the life of me I cannot find instructions (for a customer)
on how to install.
also....
when lining up the shifter trim ring on a non STi
it just looks odd
doesnt look like it's going to fit right....
looks like the ring wants to sit right on top of the boot itself.
Have you guys found this to be correct?
ahhh CLIFFNOTES:
so does it fit?
who's done it?
who has photos? the write up?
thanks!!!!

You have to cut your center console, near the shifter to make it fit. it's a PIA

Just added the STi ring on my 06 last night. Took about 10 minutes.
NOTE: The stock WRX boot will not work. You will need the STi boot as well as the ring for 05+ installs. The problem was the stock boot is raised so it is flush with the bezel. (Ware the boot and bezel meet up) On the STi boot its a little lower to allow the STi ring to sink in and become fulsh with the bezel. For the 05+ swaps there is no drilling required.

now THAT is the kind of info i'm looking for :)
THANK YOU
finally, someone who can read  :alien:
it's blatantly obvious
you DO NOT HAVE TO CUT your console to fit the 2005 trim
the sti boot must be the key to make the install "make sense"
I'll recommend that to my customers from now on.
thanks again :)

it's plug n' play.. the screws bolt into the holes on the shift boot and not your center console. i bought my shifter trim and boot used so i had to go to the dealer to get the right screws for it

Thanks for starting this thread, Jamie. Weird how I was just trying to figure this out.
Yes, using the STi boot is key. Dustin just swapped my rex boot out for an STi and the difference is that now there is a recessed place for the trim to settle into.
I bought the STi trim from a dealer but it looks like they gave me the '04 part whose bottom corners are more curved -- less squared off -- compared to the '05. On hold with them right now... .
Yup, they gave me the '04. I'll make the exchange this morning (OT: on my way to PdxT for a tune! after the 6spd etc, conversion). I'll post up later to confirm the plug 'n playness of this mod after the right boot is in.
Thanks for the pics, SubasaurusWrex and FWD WRX.

can someone put an 06 around an auto shifter to see if it will fit, i've tried an 04 and it wasn't even close.

These trim kits will not fit on AT's
they are not meant for AT's
you can probably make them work, somehow, but it will likely look
um... not so great :(

I did this on my '02 back when I first got it. It was one of the biggest PITA installs I've ever done, possibly as bad as the uppipe, and if I knew how bad I'd have to hack up the existing parts to get this simple trim ring to fit half-assed at best, I'd have never done it. It does look cool though!
I know that's not instructions but I just had to vent.

^^^ what he said, it's a PITA in the 02-04's. Done mine the day before I swapped interior, didnt think I was gonna make the deadline but it took me a while to figure out if I could do it without cutting the console, but u HAVE too, and it's not worth it IMO

okay one more time :)
this thread is not about the 2002-2004's
we're strictly talking about 2005 to 2006 installs
as the trim is completely different.... COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
thank you :)

You need the STi boot to do this... install the boot first. (Those marks near the AC control are photographic anomalies.)

If you've done that, you already know how to get behind the center console piece that surrounds the shifter and the ash tray. Just gently work your fingers under the aft lip of that part and lift.

(You don't need to remove the shifter knob. I did only to get a better view of the entire shifter trim.)
Install the shifter trim with the nuts and bolts that Jamie can provide you along with the trim... part # FE66244FE000. Hook the forward lip of the console piece under the bottom lip of the part above it and gently press down until it's seated. You're done.

If you haven't done the 6spd swap, the STi boot will leave you with a top collar that doesn't tuck into the notch on the 5spd knob like the WRX boot does (see FWD WRX's pic, above). I've seen different solutions to this, but o2sys has a cool take on it:
here is mine before the 6spd install....had it with the 5spd kb ss w/lgt knob
