Gauge Install with eBay Autometer Replica part 1

Gauge Install with eBay Autometer Replica
I know alot of people have been curious about installing gauges with the eBay autometer replica bezel. SubieGal installed hers and shared. Well, I've now installed mine on my '05, and I think it looks even better than hers. The '05 doesn't have such a prominent gap between the column and the dash. So, without further delay, here it is, with mechanical Defi boost gauge and EGT:

Installation is about as easy as it gets (for the bezel). Just remove two screws from the top of the existing bezel, and pull it out. Run all of your gauge wiring/hoses at this time. A convinient place for power is the dash clock. The EGT requires accessory, constant 12V, ground and lights-on 12V, which the clock harness conviniently has, and well labeled even.

I removed the black bezels from the D-Gauges (they slip right off). With those off, the silver surround on the D-Gauges perfectly matches the WRX silver accents, as does the font on gauges. Unfortunately, the nighttime glow doesn't match (mine are amber), but I'm not complaining.

The only thing on the gauge cluster that they block is the low fuel light and the 140MPH marker.

looks great. why does the bezel have screw holes near the gauge cups? which ebay seller did you buy this from? thanks.
mcowger 01-30-2005 10:23 PM

It has screw holes because the Autometer one does too. I have no idea what they are for, as theres nothing to screw into behind them.

I bought it from 'performance-r' on eBay, for $8.88.
mmorningstar 01-31-2005 01:01 PM

think a 60mm can get in there?
chewbakarox 01-31-2005 01:10 PM

hard to tell from the pics, but does the bezel match the interior? thanks.
mcowger 01-31-2005 01:26 PM

The cups are mostly the width depth all the way back - I doubt you could get a 60mm in there.

As for matching the interior - not sure what you mean? It doesn't have the same texture or color as teh rest of the interior, but neither did the stock piece. It does, however, match the stock piece.

odered mine, going Greddy fifty two mm

just thought of something....could the screw holes (or at least one of them) perhaps be meant for relocation of the low-fuel warning light? has anyone tried it?

that's one thing that's always bugged me about the bezel, since i always seem to be running low on gas..... :p

Looks good, however, it looks like the top of the tach is slightly cut off due to the bezel. I know it doesn't matter since it doesn't block anything technically, but the Autometer one I got didn't do that. The first batch that came from Autometer did block the tach pretty badly though IIRC.

The '05-'04 cluster trumps over the '02-'03 ones.

No, it is for a pair of brackets that come with the Autometer bezel to secure it at the bottom. You remove a screw behind the bezel, re-attach with the bracket, and there are black screws that go into the bracket from the front of the bezel.

Just wondering what gauges are those and did you buy them on ebay?

yeah i have my autometer and decided not to install those screws. more or less just there to make it more secure

Never mind, realized which gauges those were, my bad.
mcowger 02-01-2005 12:35 PM

For those who don't realize, those are Defi D-Gauge w/ black face. I bought them from a local NASIOCer.

As far as the holes - interesting, I haven't throught of that. I'd say its pretty damn secure without them. I see no evidence of them moving around. I didn't, however, proerply screw down the brackets on the gauges, and now I can hear the nuts rattling a little bit, so I get to pull it out and put some locktite on there.

As far as blockthing the cluster - it doesn't block it anymore than the stock one did (at the top I mean). Perhaps the 05 and 02 have slightly different shapes...?

[emailprotected] but its $20 for shipping. thats where he's making his $.... like all eBayer's
mcowger 02-09-2005 07:32 PM

Yeah, I fully realized it was $20 in shipping. But $28 is still FAR less than the real autometer pod.
kinkinhood 02-09-2005 07:58 PM

Your boost gauge is crooked.

i'll put $5 down that it's a portable dvd player.... :)
migs76 02-09-2005 08:47 PM

looks like satellite radio to me. i could be wrong. nice gauge set up.
mcowger 02-09-2005 08:53 PM

chewbaka, you owe me $5 :).

Its a Navman iCN 510 GPS unit. Pretty much one of the best vehicle navigation systems out there due its use of the SirF 3 chipset. It holds onto satellites EXTREMELY well, which is important for those of us who use it to navigate big cities (like SF!).

Good price too - only about $400.

I hadn't noticed. But now I do, and its going to piss me off until I fix it. Damn you!

:) You're welcome
JM530 02-09-2005 11:31 PM

Looks pretty nice!! Are those the only gauges that you run? what about oil pressure? Most people seem to run all three?
mcowger 02-09-2005 11:56 PM

Funds do not allow for Oil Press. or Temp yet :). But they are next on the list. Those I will install in the dash pod.

For my current mods, however, boost and EGT were the most important.

looks great
mmorningstar 02-11-2005 10:01 PM

Finally got mine in
Finally got my gauges in, Ebay autometer replica pod, painted black with VDO boost 30-25 and Greddy 52mm EGT. Think they came out pretty good.
