My Painted Intake Manifold part 1

D-Speed 2.5 08-30-2005 03:47 PM

My Painted Intake Manifold
I used Krylon Wrinkle Red spray paint. I left the intake manifold on and removed a couple of hoses, etc. to ease painting. I sprayed the paint into a cup and then hand painted the manifold with a paint brush (make sure to lay it on thick!). It took me about an hour. It is identicle in color to the STi intake manifold and texture. I had the chance to compare the two cars side by side the other day and you can't really tell a difference. This is my favorite mod so far and really goes with my theme of poor man's STi wagon. So far the paint has held perfect for about 500 miles.

Nice! It still crinkled up even if you didn't spray it?
D-Speed 2.5 08-30-2005 04:02 PM

Yup. The paint is so wierd, it goes on glossy then dries to a crinkle finish. I don't know how it does it, but its really cool! You can see I painted part of my HKS intake too.
SpDRcrWrex 08-30-2005 04:13 PM

hah...saw the B-52 and said...that's lowry...then I looked back to see where you live. I work at 24 hour.

oh and looks good...gonna have to try it on my 05 sedan....'cept in blue
D-Speed 2.5 08-30-2005 04:16 PM

They make a blue wrinkle finish too but it is hard to find.
enewtabie 08-30-2005 05:03 PM

Didn't think about brushing it..thanks for the idear..
wvallwheeldrive 08-30-2005 06:05 PM

where can you get this paint at
D-Speed 2.5 08-30-2005 06:09 PM

I got mine at autozone. Most auto parts stores should have this in their spray paint section. It is a red can the says "KRYLON Wrinkle Red." It should be the only wrinkle red paint available.
joeyb7 08-30-2005 08:31 PM

how long will this last though. It looks great, but I would hate to do it and then have it look like crap once it starts flaking off.
D-Speed 2.5 08-30-2005 09:53 PM

I think that if it would have flaked off, it would have done it already. I sit in a lot of stop and go rush hour traffic here in Denver. In stop and go situations, that is when the intake manifold and under hood temps are the hottest. The paint won't see water, sun, or grease so I think it should be fine.

Still around 500 miles. I don't have any more pics for now. Paint was around $5 for those who are interested.
enewtabie 08-31-2005 12:48 PM

I painted mine the same way,but I sprayed it on..It's still on two months later..no flaking.Krylon red wrinkle finish for teh win.

thats a great idea. Ive been wanting to do this for a while, but i didn't want all the hassle of removing the manifold. Looks like you picked the perfect color.
scubyslacker 09-01-2005 12:14 AM

that looks sweet, u weren't kiddin when u said it was dead on, can't wait to see once i get out to denver, this might have to be somethin i try but in blue, as someone else stated, cars lookin good darren
neuspeed 09-01-2005 12:44 AM

Wait 05's have plastic coolant resivoirs for the turbo?
Lachlan 09-01-2005 12:49 AM

Hmm, this may save me $50 for powdercoating...
chris-man 09-01-2005 01:02 AM

nice job looks like a sti.
D-Speed 2.5 09-01-2005 02:35 AM

Thanks for the compliments guys. Taking the manifold off would have been a huge undertaking that I didn't feel like dealing with. I couldn't get the underside of the manifold but all visible areas are painted. I used three different brush sizes to do the job. Yeah that reservoir is plastic but I think the 05 STi still has the metal reservoir.
tvieira24 09-01-2005 10:49 AM

Looks great and definitely makes a huge noticable difference in appearance. Good job.
RALLYT-WRX 09-01-2005 11:10 AM

Looks great!
I have also done something similiar to my wrx, but I used VHT's version which is made for high temp applications.

Here are the results: (It matched the APS pipes perfectly)

I plan on also doing the intake manifold this winter when I install my turbo and fuel rails.
D-Speed 2.5 09-01-2005 04:57 PM

^^That looks nice. Painting this thing would only take about 2 minutes if you had the manifold off of the car.
04Interceptor 09-02-2005 06:37 PM

you should tell us what needs to be done for this to work prperly like what needs to come off of the mani

bwco 09-02-2005 07:11 PM

Was there any special prep work involved? and does it adhere to the mainfold well?
o2sys 09-02-2005 07:38 PM

WOW thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u saved me my headache from this wondering if this woudl work!!! i really didnt want to remove my manifold....and bought paint...and was wondering if a brush would work!!! looks good!
o2sys 09-02-2005 07:39 PM

but how u manage to paint the bottom w/o removing it?
D-Speed 2.5 09-03-2005 01:55 AM

The bottom is not painted at all. Only the visible parts are painted. I only removed a couple of breather hoses. That's it. I used three different brush sizes. 1/2 inch was the biggest and was the one I used the most. The two smaller brushes were necessary to get into the harder to reach places. Just be patient and take your time and it will be easy.
thisisbrock 09-03-2005 07:27 AM

Thanks man. I have my next mod now! wohoo!! and itll only cost 5$, gotta love that!
