Ugly rusted rotors?
I finally got tired of looking at them:

Wow, that's clean. Care to tell us how you did it?

(and I hope that whatever you cleaned it with didn't leave a nice, slick residue  )
Rally1 04-10-2003 01:17 AM

I'll post the pictoral step by step tomorrow, as I am still working on the front ones, and want to go to bed!

Wirebrush
Wirewheel and drill
High Temp Silver paint
An oven to cure the paint

Hopefully it will last, from what i have read the method works on manifolds and headers.
Hyper 04-10-2003 02:59 AM

you put paint on rotors??
I don't think that's a good idea
Rally1 04-10-2003 03:06 AM

any reason?

If it isn't involved in any contact with any part of the car, and the paint can stand and disipate enough heat, there really isn't any reason why not. The reason they probally don't come like that is because its a bitch to do on every pair.

Looks sw33t.
Rally1 04-10-2003 03:24 AM

Just got the fronts done, and seem fine after one drive. Let's hope it lasts.

I am very happy with how it looks now, with my Rota wheels the rust was easy to see.
Cincy-Rex 04-10-2003 12:05 PM

If you are willing to pull em off, a bucket of Coke for about 20 min or so should eat that rust right off, rinse, repeat.:)
2.5RSMatt 04-10-2003 01:07 PM

Yay Coke!

I dont seem to have a powdercoater in my garage ;)

$5 can of paint works for me!
dubX1 04-10-2003 06:47 PM

I wonder if rusted rotors are covered on warranty...mine look horrible.
WRX03 05-01-2003 04:41 PM

Will you rims stick to the paint after being on the car for a while?
CirrusWRX 08-03-2003 04:15 PM

Sent you a PM from Scoobymods Rally1 re: a long term update. Care to share your opinions on how your work has held up over the last few months?!
Tobey 08-03-2003 06:07 PM

i did the same thing only i used plasti-kote high temp wood stove paint, it's flat black. i have used this stuff on all my rortors for about the last 5 years.

the stuff seals great and rust will come back every couple of months (but it is a very light rust). you can just quickly hit the spot with scotchbrite and a quick spray of the paint and it's fine again for another couple months.
99WRXEJ20 08-03-2003 07:07 PM

why not just by the rotors with a zinc plating.
Rally1 08-03-2003 07:17 PM

No problems with my Rota wheels sticking to the paint.

The only place rust looks to be creeping back through is on the outside ends of the rotors, but you have to look close.

Why buy new zinc plated rotors when you can use these perfectly functional stock rotors?

I painted stock rotors, with regular spray paint. lasted around 5k now...

Heres a pick. the flash is on, so its hard to tell im sure. they are black.

I like the racing look of no centercap, but it would be nice to hide the rust on that setup.

The Ru 08-03-2003 07:46 PM

too bad i cant find buddy club centercaps that fit....MAYBE the gaudy rota ones that stick out do. but the hub sticks out pretty far...

ian
The Ru 08-03-2003 07:47 PM

maybe i could take teh wheel off and spray paint the hub....lol. I dunno bout that. rust would prolly get back there.

ian
Rally1 08-03-2003 08:09 PM

I used these on my Rota's , no idea if they would fit on the real deal wheels like yours.

i have a set of buddy club centers i got, they are like that. the hub sticks too far out of the wheel for them to fit. i even sawed off the attachment tabs and they still wont go. maybe ill find some eventually.

Thanks much Rally1!! Those look damned spiffy, and I believe you're right off the ocean, correct? So you sorta got to try em out in the equivalent of a summertime new england winter

Those look great, and you have convinced me that I need to do the same. (ps. got the same center caps and think they're fantastic-- much better than the "CF" ones that come standard IMHO)

Also appears that the rust is coming back in the most "difficult" to keep clean area - not a huge surprise, but it is amazing to see how clean they are vs. my orange+brown mess. :o
Rally1 08-03-2003 09:33 PM

Yes I am one block from the beach, and my garage has filled up with crap, so it's parked outside at night, in the sea fog.

I think I would have no new signs of rust at all had I painted them when I first bought the car, or if I had cleaned even better.

When I look at the rotors on my Talon, I see what would have ultimatly happened, and it aint pretty. It looks like the '04 WRX models come painted from the factory.

Also I used to live in PA myself, Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA).
The Ru 08-03-2003 09:53 PM

Im about 45 mins from bethlehem allentown area. salty ****ty winter here..lol

How much did it cost to get them powdercoated?
