Thoughts on how to go scoopless... part 1

Thoughts on how to go scoopless...
Does anyone know if a carbon fiber Rs hood with no scoop is made that would fit an 04 Sti? If not, how much more does the Rs hood weigh then the STI hood. I'm afraid its a lot being the STI hood is aluminum.
I have to get rid of this breadbox of a scoop.

Thanks

Don

i am thinking about the same thing on my car. I want to get a RS hood and use it as a mold for fiberglass. I dont want any scoops or holes. I have holes now, but I dont want them.

as far as I know, there are no hoods w/o a scoop. I found one for a 02-03 but it was not of good quality.
markadopolus 09-28-2005 05:17 AM

Too bad you don't have an '06. All the '06 imprezas have aluminum hoods now.
ChrisL2 09-28-2005 06:22 AM

Why not just put the smaller WRX hoodscoop on? It is faily low profile compared to the STi one.

You could always pay a company to make you a carbon fiber hood based on the RS hood. You'll probably have to provide an RS hood though.
BLACK02WAGON 09-28-2005 09:35 AM

When I go to have my care repainted, I am thinking about having the scoop removed and welding an aluminum plate in its place
chaoticSTi 09-28-2005 10:46 AM

so the RS and STI hood are the shape though correct size wise and what not?
Master2192 09-28-2005 11:11 AM

Yes, 04-05 RS hood is going to be the same as the STi, minus the scoops and lightweight i guess.
piker28 09-28-2005 12:12 PM

but what you gain in weight you decrease in the drag that your scoop makes...you gotta give some to get some in most cases

rs hood weighs more i dont think THAT much to the power you have, no rs CF hood available, getting one made or fiberglassed or etc will cost a ton and in the end not be worth it

lightest option you got is just get a reverse scoop like from aqua for your hood, unless its aspen white then trade hoods with my rs haha
spooln04 09-28-2005 07:40 PM

yea i'm not sure a reverse scoop will work, altough I have thought about it. I beleive it will hit my BOV because of where it is mounted. With the aps 725 front mount, I have little clearance right now wiith the HKS and the hood.

Hey piker are you serious about trading hoods? My cars silver though. pm me if interested
piker28 09-28-2005 07:55 PM

not with a silver car

and if it can work with an rs hood id work with a reverse scoop is sits no lower than the stock scoop its just vents air instead of sucking it in
P-TownWRX 09-28-2005 08:05 PM

I wouldn't get rid of the hoodscoop an any WRX or STI unless you have a FMIC. In that case a reverse hood scoop or hood like an EVO is a good idea because once the air hits the FMIC it has noplace to go, but if you put a reverse hood scoop it creates a vacum and pulls out the air making your car more aerodynamic. Or is this not what you are talking about at all?
piker28 09-28-2005 08:07 PM

first off of course we are talking about cars with fmic's, no hood like the evo exists all have scoops

and no the vacum you are talking about does not exist the air is not going past the IC it hits it and thats it does not go through the intercooler, the hot air from the vent would be from the motor not air coming from the front of the car flyin magically through the engine bay
twizzstyle 09-28-2005 09:58 PM
and no the vacum you are talking about does not exist the air is not going past the IC it hits it and thats it does not go through the intercooler
Uh, the air most certainly does go through the intercooler, thats how it works. Unless I just misunderstood what you said.

If you've got the space and patience, it wouldn't be THAT hard to make your own fiberglass hood. Carbon fiber would even be easy, although a single piece that large is going to be expensive and if you've never worked with it before, it'll look like crap. If you got your hands on an RS hood, you could make a fiberglass mold, and then from that make a hood and paint it. It would be a LOT of work, so only if you're an avid DIY'er! :)
piker28 09-28-2005 10:12 PM

why not do what the person earlier said...just weld in a aluminum sheet in the scoop hole like bondo over and paint?
piker28 09-28-2005 10:13 PM

and last time i looked air does not go into the intercooler, the air from the car driving hits the fins on the intercooler and cools the air already IN the intercooler from the turbo, so no outside air really gets in if that makes sense
twizzstyle 09-28-2005 11:06 PM

I gotcha. Air doesnt ENTER the intercooler, but it passes through the fins. I thought you were saying the air just "hits" the intercooler, and goes around it. Then it wouldn't work. It passes through the fins taking the heat with it, exact same thing as a radiator or oil cooler. In other words, if you put a plate behind your intercooler, it would no longer work.

(sorry for the thread hijack, back on topic ;) )
spooln04 09-29-2005 01:26 AM

yea i'm thinking about shaving it but anyone who's welded aluminum knows the heat travels really fast across it, it is going to be difficult.

I'm also thinking of getting a wrx hoodscoop and mounting my oil cooler in there ;)

And obviously we are talking about cars with fmic. How is that even a question?
piker28 09-29-2005 11:06 AM

because youd be suprised on the amount of dumb people who would get rid of the hoodscoop with a TMIC, ive actually lost track counting em
Lexington 09-29-2005 11:23 AM

If you have a car with a TMI, you know what the scoop is for. If not, I'm not going to tell you. ;)
BrianJ1888 09-29-2005 11:42 AM

if you want light weight, get the RS hood, and cut out the support webs underneath. it'll probably flex like mad, but some dzus fasteners would hold it down.
chef2.5 09-30-2005 03:30 AM

The bottom line is that the hood scoop is really what definds this car as a subaru. It's a functional styling cue that is bold. I say stick with it.
Xhermes 09-30-2005 07:02 AM

A guy at our Dutch forums wants to get rid of his scoop on his MY04 STI to. You know how much drag that thing creates at 175 mph? Sounds like theres's a market for scoopless STI hoods ;)

+1 ... ;)

Reverse Scoops
In this forum some time ago, there were some tests done to compare FMIC systems with reverse scoops with a number of different setups including stock. If I remember correctly they seriously reduced under hood temps by going to the FMIC with reverse scoop. IMHO, top mounted intercoolers area a poor cooling design, that is done strictly for styling, and to protect the intercooler from road debris damage. So I guess it just depends what your priorities are. There is a company that sells an aftermarket reverse scoop. I have not been able to find it again though.
ofay 09-30-2005 01:54 PM

Why not just build a screen out of some mesh and sheet metal to have an evo like vent?

This is the way I am leaning too. But if you want something that is real low profile, I think this might look good...

(pic credits go to Bruce Chapman, from his awesome ride)

BTW I don't plan on going FMIC, but I am still ditching the scoop. Now let's see who jumps on me before thinking through the possibilities.

^^no offense that looks horrible, just get the normal aqua one its a ton smaller than that and least better fitment
