What do you guys check before Auto-x?

Usually I just check my belts, tires, tire pressures and fluids before auto-xing (DS, pure stock :p ). You guys have any other suggestions as precaution?

I usually check lugnuts, inspect wheels/tires for damage, inspect brakes/lines, verify swaybar mounts and endlinks are tight. I also glance at the struts to make sure everything looks fine.
Don't forget to check your fuel level!

i check the lugs with a torque wrench (new wheels/lugs moved at lrp). check what there gonna check in tech and make sure your all set (mainly wheel berrings, batt tightness)

all the stuff they said and...

every time:
boost controller (if appl.)
every other race I checked:
vacuum hoses (had one come off mid-way through a run, car almost died)
intake hoses
intercooler hoses

Lugs is a good one :) But even more important is to check the tq wrench you're using to tighten the lugs. I must have accidentally clicked my wrench down to 45 ft/lbs or something during use... suffice it to say I almost hit myself w/ the wrench when I noticed one of my RF lugs was loose! I *only* use it for tightening the lugs so I figured it would be just where I left it...

Add to the above:
-that I've removed floor mats, anything else "floating" around in the interior
-empty the trunk- spare/tools/jack
-clean window
-numbers on
You want to lower the torque setting in your torque wrench after everytime you use it. Leaving it set will eventually cause it to loose accuracy.

i unwind my t/w all the way to the lowest setting after using it. it takes the tension off the spring inside and helps proplng teh life of the tool

Helmet - CHECK!
Ummmm.... I guess that's it.

good thread and helpful, what few autocrosses i've gone to i've checked my tire pressures, my lugnut torque (i didn't know the torque wrench tip, thanks :) ), remove all loose things, and then its race time :disco:

Is that right? Good to know. I'll adopt that practice. Thanks for the tip.

[/B][/QUOTE] The instructions for my Craftsman 1/2" drive Digi Torque (or whatever it is called) wrench say something about setting torque below a certain percentage of max...I don't recall exactly. I just keep mine at 30 ft/lbs when it is stored as it satisfied the directions and that is what it was set at originally.
Also, I'm pretty sure that I read that it doesn't take more than a few minutes to skew the torque settings, after which you are supposed to set it at a low setting (around 30) for several minutes to reset...I wish I had the instructions in front of me right now - this is from memory of reading them a couple years ago.

I never checked anything... I drive on the street very nearly as hard as on the course, so I know whether or not the car is in decent shape even before I get there. :)
Oh, forgot... I checked fuel level, damn fuel starvation!

I was just going to post a fuel level question for AutoX ... how low can I be before I have to worry about fuel starvation in my '03 WRX Wgn ...

I like to arrive w/ as close to 1/4 tank as possible, less and I get little concerned (I'm fortunate as we are a small club and average 12-15 runs).
One other thing I forgot to mention that goes along w/ cleaning my window is I fold the rear view mirror up and out of the way.
One other little tip I picked up from someone here, is in hot conditions I pull the AC fuse (under the hood) and turn on the AC between runs- it activates the additional fans w/o running the AC.

Good question on fuel level. After hearing of starvation being and issue in RS's, I've had my tank at 3/4 full every time. Does anyone know how low we can go?
| BIGSKYWRX | 01-08-2004 02:46 PM |
Don't know how different it would be NA vs turbo, but I've been smidge below an 1/8th of a tank w/ no problems- I don't like to get below that however. Starting w/ 1/4th of tank (vs full), nets me ~ 70 lbs in savings.

I have all my stuff like helmet, magnetic numbers, jack, chocks, etc. sitting all together and generally I just throw everything in the car and go when it's time for an event. I do tend to get it all packed the night before so I can just wake up and leave. I've seen some people keep everything in a plastic storage bin and have it all contained and ready to go, I might do that in the future, we'll see.
I also like to have as little gas as possible, at my last event the fuel light actually came on before my last run and I never had a problem with fuel starvation.
I'm fairly fanatical about having a clean window whether there's an autocross or not, my car may get dirty and there might be food stuck in the back seat from the kids, but the windshield will be clean!

The only problem is when you lend numbers to people and forget to check em first :)

Things to check on a subie...
TRanny fluid
Tranny mount bolts
Strut top nuts
driver's seat bolts
sway bar mounts
lugs
brake fluid color
Tires (wear and pressure)
Waste gate control line
oil level
coolent level
anything else that moves around or loosens up!

Yah ... oil level shouldn't be too high since heat expansion can give you too much oil ...
AWMIII - What should one be looking at vis a vis "brake fluid color?"

When the brake fluid is bled it should be the correct color... IE like the fluid in the resevoir. If it is clear mustard yellow at the master cylander and the fluid in the caliper is black change it! Of if it is milky then change it.

I like to wait until SpeedAbsolute is done checking his car and then lower his front tire pressure about 10 psi. Then, I have someone distract him while I set his rear sway bar on the softest setting:devil:
