Re-stitched STI shifter / e-brake boots part 1

Re-stitched STI shifter / e-brake boots
Again, not happy with plain stock B.S.

Ordered "perfect match to the OEM STI red / pink stitching" thread from an online upholstery shop. It's really thick polyester upholstery thread, and a dead-on match to the stock steering wheel, shift knob, and steering wheel stitching.

Anyhoo, 9 hours in front of the TV later, here it is. Ripped out all the original double flat stiching from both boots with a seam ripper, re-stitched it with new thread with a heavy gauge upholstery needle (in the original thread holes). Matches perfectly, especially next to the shift knob / e-brake handles.

Cost me like $14.00 and a few bandaids.....LOL

I think it looks haaaawt! What do you guys think? (No Martha Stewart jokes, please).

Pix of original, please... (too lazy to walk out to garage and look).

Is there a difference?

I'm assuming so, but I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish.

Regardless, you've still earned an "E" for effort for working 9 hours at this. Well done.

P.S.------Why,yes! I DID paint in the STI logo on the shifter trim (in pic #2)

Cause I'm good like that.......

I was trying to accomplish total USDM hawtness. And be somewhat original.

The old boots were black with black stitching. BLAH.

The STI reddish-pink stitching makes it POP! (Said with a queer eye lisp) LOL

P.S. Props to the other NASIOC member who helped me by giving me the internet link and thread color number. I can't remember his screen name.

BIGSKYWRX 10-07-2005 11:04 PM

Nice job- way beyond my skill level- can't even sew a button on :(

I might be able to paint the little STi logo on my shifter trim though- how did you do that?
ekw 10-08-2005 09:03 AM

the easiest way to paint something that is 'etched' or recessed into a surface like the STi logo on the shift trim is to get the paint nice & thin so it will flow, dip the brush (or toothpick, thin wire, whatever) in the paint, and then touch the tip in the recess. if the paint is properly thinned, it will flow into the recess and self level.

another way would be to "wax" the raised surround area w/ something flat similar in concept to the wax bars for skis or snowboards, or even a small flat piece of 1x2.
anything that will let you wax the raised area but not the recess.
then you can paint in the recess. any paint you get on the raised area should rub off w/ a cloth, as it will be sitting on a layer of wax.

i am sure there are abt 100 other ways, and 96 of them might be better.
but those are the 1st two i could think of.
the first one is a standard plastic modeling technique for doing recessed detail.
you might not even have to get the paint 'real thin' as it is a pretty big recess compared to what the technique is normally used on. BUT, it has to be thin enough to flow out, or you will just end up w/ a drop of paint sitting where you touched the brush.

edit - how rude of me!
great job on the stitching and thanks for the link to the thread!
next time, borrow a thimble!
:-)

Check this out. I have the shift boot, the ebrake boot, and the center console cover. They all rule and use a much better feeling leather material. Feels much MUCH better than that check vinyl feeling junk.

spree768 06-23-2008 09:10 PM

it looks really good, how'd you paint the sti
TimeAtk 02-24-2009 07:38 PM

How do you take off the ebrake boot?
ScoobaSTieve 02-24-2009 09:05 PM

You got to take the center console out. Once you get it out, flip it over and you will see how to separate the boot from the inside of the center console.
