What to use on the black plastic around the exterior?
What do you guys use as conditioner on the black plastic around the car? (i.e. side skirts, around the fog lights and grille)

Subie Gal..... it's not that bad, no worse than any other goo
04SubieWRX 03-11-2004 06:09 PM

Is it safe for tires, or does it dry them out?
Thanks
Ben

I don't think it's reccomended for rubber......

You really want to get Meguiars Endurance for your tires..... that is THE tire shine(but you can make it less shiney) Also, if your tires are getting that brown weathered look, but some Wesles Bleach White...... The brown just rolls off leaving nice fresh rubber..... just make sure to use it B4 you wash so you can rinse it.
riverarob 03-11-2004 06:46 PM

meguiars gold class trim detailer..........only occasionally. If I want to spoil the car a bit. A basic wash is fine usually.

i can't recommend this stuff enough.

Put it in a spray bottle & use a foam/cotton applicator pad. Works wonders on any plastic/vinyl interior or exterior bits. Great stuff.

That's the stuff I use also and it's da bomb!!!

I try to use as many Stoner's products as possible :)

I recommend paint on the sideskirts (then you just wax it!), painted sti replica fog-light covers for the fog lights (the black mesh seems to be ok untouched, and you just wax the painted part), and I leave the grill alone (hasn't seemed to change much over the past year and a half or so)

For tires, I have used a 3M product (renew or something like that - as well as a scotchgard gel product) which works well - makes them look nice, but not like the "wet look" products out there (which look horrible to me)

r1xliquid 05-29-2007 09:53 AM

breathing some new life into this old thread...

Is everyone who is conditioning their plastic exterior parts in aggreance that you should be using products that do not contain alcohol?

I am trying to find the best product to purchase and i found this thread. Does anyone know which of the above products contain/do not contain alcohol?

thanks for any info.

If the plastic trim has oxidized (started turning white, looking like an old car) use a Mr. Clean magic eraser to clean it up. The eraser leaves it's own white powder and film, however it wipes off very easily. Now you can treat the plastic with your favorite product of choice.

303 Aerospace is what I use.

i'm another fan of the stoner products, stoner's trim shine works great
JnJassociates 05-29-2007 04:41 PM

303 Protectant. Will work on all of the above and instead of just a temp coat of black, it will stay black and not fade. No greasy look or feel. Does not attract dust and makes future clean up easier.

Also, it will not harm your paint, in fact it can be used on paint. :)

turtle wax ice works well....
scarsofterror 05-29-2007 05:18 PM

+123 for all the Stoner's products!! the invisible glass works great as well!
neg_matnik 05-29-2007 05:20 PM

Try Plexus plastic cleaner. It's a very good anti-static surface protectant (will not attract dust/lint). I'm using it all over my motorcycles (painted plastic fairings and clear plastic parts).
For the Subie, I'm spraying it onto the bumbers, the side skirts, onto the black plastic around the side mirrors, onto the mirrors themselves, onto the doors rubber gasket, onto the dashboard, onto the alloy wheels, ...
I accidentally over-sprayed it onto the windshield inside the car and I've found out that it's also pretty good on it.
BigEars2303 05-29-2007 05:57 PM

anything mothers or megirues works well, stones only good product is the invisible glass there trim shine really isn't that great
Eyedoc Orlando 05-29-2007 06:02 PM

Turtle Wax ICE works wonderful on the black plastic (mirrors, front, etc)

+1 this stuff is great, but hard to find =)

it works wonders on the rubbers around the window/door seals too!
Rice Devil 05-30-2007 05:32 AM

Another trick is to hold a heat gun over the top moving it side to side so it doesnt burn/ melt the plastic and it comes out like new! last along time too.
