What % Tint? part 1

snwborder5 08-25-2005 04:42 PM

What % Tint?
I am looking at tinting my red Volvo S40 and am having a tough time decided what percentage tint. I am thinking between 20 and 10, but what do you guys think I should get? Also does anyone know any websites where I could see different percentage tints?

Thanks in advance

You'll have to see it in person to decide. Go to a tint shop and ask to see some examples to compare.

Oh... and 10% is really dark. I think most people get 20-40.

I got 50% tint on my WRX so that I wouldn't get hassled by cops. :) I had 20% on my previous car and it was too dark at night to even reverse.

Thanks

Is 50% even noticable, save UV protection? I am considering trading up to an STI at some point. I love the 35% I have on my WRX now, but I'd prefer not to give cops another thing to cite me for with the big pull-me-over wing on the STI.

I just got 35% all-around yesterday...if I were to do it again, I'd do 35% on the fronts and 20% on the rear and hatch, or maybe even 20% all-around. I mean, I really like the way they look, just maybe a tad bit darker and I doubt I'd get hassled. See all the gangstas rolling around with limo-tint on their windshields, so a Subaru wagon wouldn't be much of a target for cops.

I'd go 20% if I were you. 10 is too dark, 35 maybe a tad light (although it seems to maybe be darkening a bit as it dries?).

I didn't think it was...I used to have 50% on my old car on just the fronts (hand-me-down...parents got it for UV protection only) and you couldn't really tell without looking closely. I dunno, I'm sure its slightly darker than stock, but I've never heard of someone getting hassled w/ 35%. If you get pulled over for speeding or something and they decide to check it, then maybe, but getting pulled over jsut for having 35% would be a bit ridiculous.

Yes, it is noticable :) I'll take some pics when I get home.

Thanks

I had 20% all around on my old car, never hassled.. but i also live in an area where every joe on the block has a killer bee mad syck JDM grapefruit shootin' exhaust..

At night it was impossible to back up.. I got used to it but it was tough.. annnnd

as far as headlights go and UV transmission.. one night i was bombing down RT3 with my buddy and I see him pull over outta the travel lane and I was wondering ***.. so I look out my rear view and i see lights like flashin or something but it looks just like bumps in the road.. nope 2 mins later i look again and its a statey with his headlights flashing so I pull over to the travel lane and he goes flying by.. wasnt after me phew.. but my tint was so dark his strobes looked like normal headlights ... haha 20% is illegal for a reason..

as far as functionality and looks and such I'd go with 35% and if you're worried about cops then get the legal limit..

Also you get what you pay for..

Some things to ask when looking at tint shops -

Single rear windshield rather than 3-4 strips of tint
door windows microedged.. this means no gap or a very small one around the window..

If you find a shop that will do it for $200 including supplies verify those 2 details.. if they say "oh yea we do that" then it turns out they didn't microedge your windows and your rear windshield is in 4 pieces.. demand a refund for the labor and the entire job.. lots of tint places with the $200 special do very professional HOME installs.. meaning the guy doing it is a good vinyl installer but he probably doesnt have the equipment to do a job that is very clean and doesnt leave ricetastic gaps all over ur windows..

Also if you don't care about the 4 piece rear windshield or the gap around the doors then DEFINATELY DO NOT GET ANYTHING UNDER 35%.. the overlap of the rear windshield is really noticeable if your tint is dark because the overlap makes the tint obviously darker.. so you have horizontal lines.. GROSS.. and as far as the gaps on the doors go.. when you roll your window down the darker the tint the more noticeable the gap.. if you hold tinted 20% window next to nontinted factory window the difference is very noticeable from inside and out... and it looks like Shyt with a gap.. 35% is less noticeable and 50% is even less but.. why worry about all this fuss when you could pay $400 and get it done right the first time most times with a lifetime warranty for purpling, bubbling, peeling, and any other defects that are common with "Cheap tint specials"

roger that. i used to have 20% as well and i had a hard time taking left turns. i could never see the island!! i would recommend 35% as the darkest you should go.
Subie Gal 08-25-2005 05:20 PM

5% rear
20% front

took some getting used to but i love it :)

So what do you guys think of maybe 20 percent on back windows and 30 on the front?
live- 08-25-2005 05:58 PM

I doubt you'll find 30...normally it goes from 35% to 20%. But that is the exact setup I'd recommend after going 35% all-around just yesterday...20% on the rears and back and 35% on the fronts is what I'd do.
Blazin 08-25-2005 06:26 PM

Brave souls. lol I have these odds to find myself in the most randomly designed wooded driveway at night with the only solution to be backing out.. i'd never go with 20% again.. its bad enough now with my wing blocking some view.. but then again.. some Superbright reverse lights and mirrors do wonders for backup nightmares
alpinev12 08-25-2005 06:30 PM

limo (5%) shoulders back and 35% in the front...very nice in my opinion

Blazin - how much was your tint job from TintKing? I'm actually looking to get this done soon.
02SilverRex 08-25-2005 06:48 PM

well i have 5% all the way around and i love it. no one can see in during the day and one one can see in or out at night but me for somereason. i think that samw % all the way around looks better than 10% on front and 20% on back or what have you
DJ_STI 08-25-2005 06:51 PM

I had 20% on my wrx, at first I thought it was way too dark, but now i love it. My next car will also be tinted 20% all around (except windshield)
sregger 08-25-2005 07:07 PM

i have 20% all around on a black car and love it. It is just right imo. I can still see fine at night, but it looks really good. I also think it looks better to go the same percentage on all windows instead of different in the front and back, but that's just my opinion.
musee13 08-25-2005 07:12 PM

I have 15% all around. I love it, sometimes at night I have issues but my eyes are going too.
survive autodafe 08-25-2005 07:12 PM

the best combos imo are 15% all around OR 20% rear 35% front.

My old car was a 3 door 2002 SC2.. so they charged me $375.. they moved shop i guess to Billerica..

Call them up and tell them what year, model, and make of your car and they tell you.. and what you get quoted is what it costs.. no bull****.

If you are deabting between 20 and 10....get 15!!!!! Thats what i have, i love it.
DrD 08-25-2005 08:57 PM

around here, most people get 35% front (max legal tint) and 20% rear (max legal tint) - 20% is a little too dark for me at night, so I went 35% all around - really made a big difference in the sun!
Sun Burn 08-25-2005 09:39 PM

I've had 13% all around on my last 3 cars and I love it. Not too dark no too light. I had 4 on my old civic. That was like trying to look through construction paper!

I have 35% in front and 25% in back 3. I wish it was a little darker but its fine.
How do you like your s40? Is it a T5, AWD or FWD? My brother just ordered an 06 s40 T5, should be here in a month or so. I test drove one and they r extreamly nice cars. The torque makes it very drivable.
MinimaG71 08-25-2005 09:50 PM

limo in the rear, and 15% in the front

Holy ****, I just paid $200 for 35% all around on my wagon and it looks great...why would you pay $375 for a tint-job on a 3-door car?
