What are you guys doing/using to prevent rock chips!
As most of you know, I recently painted my car, AGAIN. lol

Anyways, I drove it for about 2,000 miles tops, and it already started chipping on the sideskirts and rear lip, right behind the tires. When I had the car black and painted the first time, I put 3m clear stuff there, but took it off because it looked terrible. It still chipped up, but since it was black it was hard to notice. That's not the case on the white paint.

Well, needless to say, I took the car apart again and it went back to paint. The painter completely stripped all of the paint off the bumpers and lip kit, then used sealer and white primer. He offered to use this new flex clear stuff, almost like a rockguard clear just the parts of the lip kit that are right behind the tires. He said it may have a orangle peel look, but not sure. I don't know if I feel like painting this car every month because of chips from driving it, so I might do it. I mean, I could always just blue painter tape it up and just roll, but that might look kinda silly going to school and meets. lol

My question is, does anyone else have rock chips? How do you prevent them? Also, do you know anything about this flexiable clear?

I put some $3 autozone mudflaps on to prevent rock chips on teh sides. They work decently for now. for front bumper chips, I just make sure I stay behind traffic a bit and try not to cry when they happen.
yzracer758 01-29-2007 02:13 PM

If I were you I would just use the old blue painter's tape method(If I drove my car enough thats what I would do.) Your car is super sick and I don't think anybody is gonna make fun of you for trying to keep your car looking good. If they do, they need to get their head examined. Well there's my 2 cents anyways and I love your car.:D

d-money's car is gay.
IIdiceII 01-29-2007 02:20 PM

I would just save your money, and by a beater car.

I second the mudflap idea and the beater. I put the car away from Dec. to March and drive my truck...I know, I'm not much help.

Do you think the blue tape will mess up my fresh paint at all? Or do I have nothing to worry about?

Not the front of the car, the side skirts and rear lip, you know the spot right behind the front and rear tires.
gdbimpreza 01-29-2007 10:32 PM

I'm in the same situ, so I'm fitting a set of black mudflaps to stop this, we get alot more crap on the roads here in scotland tho.

Heh I just accepted the fact that the car is gonna get chipped no matter what if it is my daily driver. I live in the country so the roads are dirty as crap and sand everywhere. Its just a fact of life. However the clear RockBlocker stuff works wonders if it is installed correctly. Most of the time you can't even see it.

Ummmm ya i know. Its there too...and theres a 2" strip above the winshield...at the start of the roof.
Brainchild Customs 01-30-2007 12:15 PM

the problem with the clear bra on a show car is that you can see the lones where it stops. looks bad imo(although i guess rock chips look worse).

D...just rock the painters tape, it wont hurt the finish, but i wouldnt leave it on for more than a day or so just in case.
CoolRex 01-30-2007 12:32 PM

Over time the glue on the painters tape can be corrosive.

Well the problem with show cars is theyre not meant to be daily drivers...Pay too Play!! get a daily driver then. :o

If you are worried about chips from small rocks ect. consider not owning a car that you are affraid to drive or just leave it parked. Even if you leave it parked you will get scratches ect.
It's a fact of life that no matter what you do to protect your car it is always vulnerable. If you do to much to stop chips ect. someone will come along and screw it up somehow. Chips and scratches are not 100% preventable, never was never will be.

Plus 12345654321 blillionty on the Mud flaps. Much less side collateral damage from rocks with them on.
D Money 01-30-2007 01:47 PM

omg lol, im not afraid of rock chips! I just want to see if there are different ways to prevent it, that's all.

and I don't drive the car daily, that's what my hyundai is for.
D Money 01-30-2007 04:06 PM

Anyways, thanks for everyone input. I actually just got home from the body shop and they are going to put some type of rock chip clear on that particular section, he said it will blend in fine, and look 10x better than rock chips. Thanks again...
