Grist to help with Rally New York WRC bid.

Colin McRae's former co-driver, Nicky Grist has confirmed that he will help Rally New York USA in their bid to attain a place in the FIA World Rally Championship.

A statement from the organisers issued on Tuesday, added that Grist will serve as advisor for Rally New York USA, as well as acting as one of the stewards on the event that will take place in Monticello, New York in April this year.

"I am looking forward to assisting this experienced promoter as well as US rallying in their efforts to attain World Rally Championship status for their rally. It has been a long time since the World Rally Championship visited these shores and as long as the organisers can meet the FIA standards, then I am sure they stand a very good chance of achieving their goal," said Grist, before departing for this weekend's Rally Norway - an event he also works for and which is a candidate event for being included in the WRC in 2007....

Surely Subaru, Mitsubishi and Ford could team up and add some fuel to the fire and get this thing done!

Here's to hoping!

Wow good luck with that New York. It was hard enough to bring F1 back with it's "limited fan base", WRC + ZERO television presence in the US = hell freezing over? Color me skeptical.

That would be nice seeing I am close enough to go but I also have my doubts.

Grist is all about bringing the WRC to the US. Why not? You have a large population base in the area. I say try it!

Not in NYC.

It needs to be more in the gegraphical center of the country enableing more fans to get to the rally.

i heard the Grand CAnyon was being discussed.

Maybe yellowstone, or south dakota. Geography is very important.

Are we thinking gravel or tarmac?
PRODRIVEN 02-09-2006 06:49 PM

Tarmac rally in canyons around SoCal would be sweet!
SubaruImpreza_power 02-09-2006 08:47 PM

Oh ****.... Something very close to home!!

If you want to see a WRC event in NY... COME SEE THE RALLY THAT IS THERE NOW! It happens twice a year, and it's a big event with lots of cool cars going very fast, so why not? If the FIA doesn't see you out there, they won't be impressed with the rally and they'll pick somewhere else. Better yet, volunteer to work as a marshall, it's a lot more effective than crossing your fingers!

Are you kidding me? New York City IS the center of the country! If you think more people will go to South Dakota you are out of your mind. Can you imagine how many European fans would want to come to see Rally New York, and get to take their wives shopping in the city? Well, some guys might not find that ideal, but you get the point! ;) You'll get a heck of a lot more people coming to one of the most important cities in the world, with major transit hubs, than you would in Yellowstone.

Besides, "we" are not thinking anything - Ivan organizes Rally NY and he wants to see his rally go WRC, it's not a board of directors sitting around trying to get WRC anywhere in the US.

I'll be there for both.

I don't think a 'heartland' WRC event would really work though personally. The population masses are on the coasts, so putting the rally in the center of the nation would do nothing but increase the travel distance for most (not all) of us. An east coast and west coast rally would be cool though (New York and California... drool), but I don't honestly see that as even remotely feasable.
kevinsUBARU 02-10-2006 02:26 PM

RNY is a very "central" location. If this gets big, they could easily spill some of it over in Ulster County and experience even more roads in the Catskill Park. Potential is there....definately there. That being said, I look forward to viewing my 4th RNY this spring. See you there :)
parker/slc/gc8fan 02-10-2006 04:25 PM

Actually I think you guys have point.

One rally would be enough, We'd need east/west in my opinion.

Tarmac in the east, gravel in the wild west. Now that sounds good in my head.

I know alot of WRC cliber dirt roads in Utah, Especially around the moab are, just outside Colorado. (two of the biggest subaru states)
solo2wrx 02-10-2006 08:38 PM

Well the Rally New York is both a gravel and tarmac event so that covers both bases. As for two events I think we need to take what we can get to start with. I understand the need for one on each coast but if it does happen and I hope it does the event will be in the location that offers the best roads and facilities to base the event from. The service base for Rally New York is at a horseracing track that has plenty of room for big rigs and cars. No matter where in the country it ends up being if it happens I will be there.
jpsimon 02-10-2006 08:44 PM

yeah as nice as rally new york would be location wize for me... i'll end up going where ever it is in the US
Howl 02-10-2006 08:57 PM

Ya, you Southwest/California guys can just pop down to Mexico already. We need something up on this side of the continent.
