And rallying a 2.5L Impreza is cheap?
Quite a few folks on this forum drive rally cars. Hey, even I wrecked one in October. If you ask for it, you'll get advice, but be realistic. Here are some basic thoughts for stage rally:
It will cost you AT LEAST $6k to prep a road worthy Impreza into a rally car.
DO NOT rally a car that you can't afford to write off.
Be prepared to spend $1k per weekend, even at small regionals.
Rally takes way more balls than you think.
No matter how fast you think you are, you're not fast.
Andy Howe <--- autocrosses because he can afford it, rallies when he forgets what it costs

I would swap the $6000 for $10-$15 for a proper prepped car that will last more than one event
and the $1000 rally weekend is more like $2000-$4000 in most cases

Rallying a 2.5L Impreza IS cheap, if you do it right.
I don't think there's anything better.
While I'm at it, screw all you "2wd first" guys.
betguy, a 2.5RS is legal in a couple classes and does OK.

and running a 2.2 impreza is even cheaper and just as fun when starting out.
betguy, a lot of the stuff that makes a rally car last a long time isnt very expensive as far as materials and equipment are concerned, however, they do require a pretty significant labor investment and that can cost more money if you cant do it yourself.

You can build a legal Impreza rally car for about $6K. Grassroots Motorsports did it... I did it... I'm sure others have done it as well. Early Impreza shells are getting cheap folks. This is with out proper gravel rally struts though. Not counting my time either. If you factor my time the cost would be in the $15k range though... maybe more... probably more... Rally car prep is very time consuming...
Gravel Rally Struts and Turbos (diffs too) can cost you big money though the parts are "off the shelf".
My $6K Impreza rally car is arguably way more capable, sturdy and upgradable than any other available rally car platforms with a $6K investment.
Thank you SOA for my $200 start money at Oregon Trail Rally this year. :)

First pick a sanctioning body you wanna run in. Either Rally America or United States Rally Championship.
You must first rally and finish so many rallies in a 2wd vehicle. I know that is a rule for sure in RA don't know for sure about USRC.
Then go from there. If you are set on building a Subaru rallycross and see if you will like it.
Oh and expect to spend at least $1000 per race weekend.
Peace out

"How about a rock-crawling Impreza?"
Well, mine was the first-ever CAR to compete in any event at Gravelrama (in its 35 year history).
http://www.gravelrama.com/
I'll tell you right now, the overhangs in the front and behind the rear wheels are murder.
Seriously tho, (and everyone here at a Subaru site should have this tatooed on them already) Subie 4wd makes everything so much better and cheaper(!) because the power is shared between all the wheels.
Tires last, axles last, diffs can be open and never fail.
With an NA motor, even transmissions can last if you watch yourself.
2wd guys are ripping up front tires, breaking axles and are always looking for the right diff.
I think a 2.2 could last forever (and since Greg's is still at O'Neil's doing school service, probably do).
Need a part? Buy an old rusted out Legacy and get a whole car full.
Being Subarus, all the mechanicals are still good.
You may think the turbo guys are running up the costs, but most blow up and run out of money, I've outlasted a whole generation of them. With 11 entries at WW last weekend as a hint, the only way anyone will be able to run this sport a full season is with a NA car or a large fortune. Points in every event next year will guarantee a top 10 maybe top 5.

Sorry about the picture, that was my EZPass that I forgot about - right in front of the lens.
The one of the Jeep shows what it looked like but imagine sloppy ooze and me stuck in 1st gear barely moving.
The only exciting part is that I was the first one to make it more than 1/2 way.
The bulldozer pulled 4 jeeps out before me!
No one got past the biege colored crossover part right after the 90 right around the tree.
The next one after me got stuck too!
The tabletops had very sharp edges from the bulldozer and was very hard on the front end of my car, but I made the ramps very nice for the following Jeeps.

And top 9 after 5 events go to X Games! There you go - follow Randy's plan to get to LA. I think a good driver in a NA Impreza could definitely do it.
(Top 8, really, but prior year's winner gets a free invite, and we expect to be in the top 8).

Their car was ok, but the cage left a lot to be desired - I wouldn't rally it. The welding was a work of art, but the fit looked as if it was for the wrong car - a pillars tubes meeting the halo 4 inches away from the a-pillar, etc.
I bought my rally car for $6,000 ($7,000CDN at the time) and put a few more grand into it before doing two events. In the end I spent $10,000 on the car, upgrades, and all safety gear, then $4,000 to run two events. I sold my old rally-x car for $4,000 so I call it at $10,000 for the whole deal, which I think is cheap.
