dude good question I would like to do the same thing
kellygnsd 07-17-2006 09:36 PM

your looking for an aftermarket headliner? A good custom shop should be able to make you one
patriot1136 07-17-2006 10:25 PM

yeah, how much do you think something like that would run?
NewSTI 07-17-2006 10:37 PM

i did that with my integra type R b4, and mostly it's about the material, and it cost me like 150 or 200 total, don't remember excatly, but wat they did was wrap another layer over stock, and that was including the whole roof and pillars as well.

why buy one? just DIY.. its very simple... you take all the pillars off... the dome lights and drop the headliner... Pick out what fabric you want and get a good bomding glue that can withstand heat...3M doesnt work well.. trust me. Lay the new fabric over the headliner and glue as you go so you can get all the corners.... thats it... its easy
ekw 07-18-2006 10:15 AM

yeah, that would be the easy part.
now - what will you do abt the grey visors, grey visor hardware,
grey grab handles . . .
the dome light, map light & seat belt hangers will probably take paint,
but what abt the rest of it?

btw - my local upholstery shop will recover my roof piece for $100.
but they won't touch the visors.
LathanM 07-18-2006 10:35 AM

Die the visors with fabric paint to match the headliner. It is really easy since it just sprays on. Do the same with the pilar covers, grab handles, etc. For the plastic pieces hit them with a coat of the Krylon plastikote primer then with color. No flaking or cracking. In less than a day you could have the whole thing done.
ekw 07-18-2006 11:42 AM

LathanM -
i have done my pillars w/ the SEM 'bumper coater' in Medium Smoke.
(over duplicolor adhesion promoter / clear primer)

i am worried abt the durability on the visors and visor hardware
(where it snaps in)
anything you put on the seat belt piece that the belt runs thru will wear thru the second time you use the seat belt.

i have bad feelings abt how the vinyl/fabric dye will wear on the grab handles,
as well as any part of the visor handled regularly.
i just doubt the (dye) penetration is significant.
(i'd love to be wrong)

how long ago did you do your visors, etc?
how are they holding up?
any pictures?

Metal?????? I didn't think they'd put a headliner or non essential stuff in a full blown racecar. Got pics?
flankgent 07-18-2006 06:08 PM

can u even take the headliner outta the car w/o taking either the front window out or the rear window???
BoostorLose 07-18-2006 06:25 PM

Yeah a headliner is a simple DIY. You can get it out without having to remove the rear or front windshield. The visors and and such are the difficult part.
Ghosthound 07-18-2006 06:57 PM

you should be able to dye the plastic parts. just add some dye to some boiling water, then drop the parts in the boiling water for 5-10 minutes. it penetrates deep enough that normal rubbing will not cause the original color to shine through.
altezza2impreza 07-19-2006 03:29 AM

why not cover over the holes for the visors than buy a cusco 6 point rollcage so even if you wanted to you couldnt use the visors and there are no holes from when they were there. i might consider this 1/2 DIY mod......
MannyMohawk#5 07-19-2006 05:29 AM

This thread makes me want to cry. Most rally cars are stripped of the factory interior except for a dash and door panels, and that's only because they are usually required. They don't worry about having a sweet suede head liner in their race car. Sometimes the dash is wrapped in suede or some other fabric because it eliminates the glare. As far as putting your plastic pieces in boiling water, you try it first and let us know how it turns out. I can't imagine that it wouldn't damage or melt something. It is possible to dye plastics a different color and have it last, but it isn't via a rattle can of duplicolor vinyl paint. I would leave it to professionals.

This Is what I ment. I wanted the cool fabric that they put on the dash so I can put it on my headliner and pillars, but I didn't know what it was called so I asked.
MannyMohawk#5 07-19-2006 05:38 PM

^^^They either suede or alcantara, but you can wrap it whatever you like. Just remember, to do it right is gonna cost money!
ekw 07-20-2006 08:08 AM

fwiw - i showed the guy at my local auto upholstery shop my A, B & C pillars (out of the car) and a spare clock pod, and asked him if he could cover the pillars in a material that was a close match for the pod.
he said no, because it would not conform well to the curves near the ends of the A & B pillars, or to the depressions (for seat belt mount track) in B & C pillars.
he felt that it could be done w/ fabric but it would not wear well.
(we did not, however specifically discuss suede / micro suede / escaine / alcantara)

i am not saying that you should not try (hopefully on a spare piece).
just adding another data point.
bigworm 07-20-2006 08:36 AM

are there any other subaru seat belt sliders or oh sh** handles that will work that are black this would be the hard part out of everything.
ekw 07-20-2006 10:50 AM

that's what i've been saying/trying to find out.
same for visors.
btw - the seat belt sliders are not going to come off quietly.
there is a plastic disc/rivet that keeps them from sliding down to the anchor end.
if you cut the plastic 'stopper' off, you will need something to replace it, or the buckle will go to the floor at every opportunity.
