My reasons for painting:
1: It's a 93 Impreza in that fugly mint green.
2: It's a 93 Impreza, so it has some rust under the mud flaps, and above the bumpers.
3: I'm not willing to pay someone to put the same color back on when they do the rust repair.
How much it's going to cost:
Most shops I went to were looking at about $2400-$3000. I was willing to pay that much, since I want to do all sorts of cool things to my car. But, I was talking to the owner of a collision shop near my work, and he had no interest in doing rust repair. He suggested that I go to a place down the road, where that's all the guy does. And he does it cheap. Turns out this guy haas been a bodyman for 35 years, his 5 sons are also bodymen, and he gave me some references. He'll do the job for $1500 :disco:
It will take about 2 weeks to get it done. That includes the engine compartment, door jambs, and trunk.

Damn! For that price I'd consider driving to Maine for a full respray. Have you seen his work on any customer's cars?
For those who haven't seen, here is a S4 in Nogaro Blue:

Yeah, i've seen his work. He has a mid 60's Chevy pick-up that a customer never picked up sitting outside his shop. It looks very good. He said that when he got it, it had a half dozen rust holes on it, but there's no way any one would know now. Thanks for tossing up a pic of the color. I will post before and after shots when it gets done.

That will look tight

Oh, did I also mention that I'm putting on a 98' RS hood, lights and grille? Or clear corners? I also want to do a front bumper, but I'll probably go with an aftermarket later on. I just need to find an RS coupe spoiler.

that does seem like a great deal. what kind of paint is he using? i was thinking of repainting my entire car (i can get ppg paint and clearcoat for under $100 for the entire car) but i like the famous WRB. maybe i'll get a custom job in a few years. good luck to ya and im waiting for pics...

| 2002pete | 03-21-2005 05:25 AM |
great looking color Nogaro Blue :D After monday pics please
| russd32 | 03-21-2005 09:15 AM |
The stock paint sux because it's not clear coated. It's a single stage acrylic. I don't know what brand of paint subie uses. I'm sure it's not PPG since they are in Japan. Probably Sikkens or something, who knows. Keep in mind that just because you are getting PPG doesn't mean it's great. PPG has several lines of paint, from inexpensive shade tree mechanic MTK which will fade in a couple of years to DBC or Global which will last forever. You can usually tell a difference by the $$$.

Subie Paint Most Definatly DOES have a clearcoat.
Unless there is 1 color or unless they didn't have it before 2002. I know subie paint has a clearcoat for 2 quick reasons:
1. When I buff my car if there was no clearcoat all my pads would turn black from my paint which they dont and
2. Every time my car has been repaired they have used a clearcoat and they don't just arbitrarily use clear, they use it when it already has clear on it. Without the clear i think the Blue metallic flakes would be hard have an effect.

He will be using Martin Senour paints. (NAPA) Just the paint is $200, the clear is another $150. To clarify, the car isn't getting painted until NEXT Monday (a week from now) and I will definately post pics.
| AirForge | 03-21-2005 01:42 PM |
Ive heard some horror stories about that Martin Senours paint. It is pricy and difficult to spray. Id recommend Crossfire or Omni, both are cheaper and well known for producing great paintjobs on a budget. I hope it turns out well. Post pics!
