diy mod sneak peek...snowboarders rejoice

okay, so I've been obsessed with a folding rear seat in the sedan for a long time now (don't get too excited...i didn't make one)...but ...I did some measuring and found that the pass-thru is only an inch or so too narrow to fit my big ass snowboards. A few hours later, and I had this:

I still have to tighten the fabric around the pass-thru, and make something to fill in the 3/4 inch gap on either side of the it. but I can easily fit 4 snowboards through the pass-thru (I stacked em like that in the pic to see if 4 would fit...i would obviously alternate em upside down and rightside up in real life). next up is a modified snowboard bag that velcroes into the trunk-side opening for the pass thru to keep the seats from getting dripped on or cut.
when it was stock, I couldn't even get 1 board in, so im pretty happy with this. Once I'm done, I'll post some progress pix and instructions for anyone else out there that hates roof racks.

ugh...no love for the pass thru mod...oh well... i like it ;)
| andy | 09-20-2004 07:02 PM |
hey i like it its a good idea and i like your boards and you realy have 4 boards to your self???
| quest | 09-20-2004 07:30 PM |
I've got 4 boards, but only two with bindings right now. I just need enough room to take 2 boards easily. If I'm going up to Blackcomb (big-ass mountain) it would be nice to have room for my big board and my park board, as well as a board for anyone else that got a ride up.

Yeah, I've been looking for a good way to pull this off so I don't have to get a ski rack to put on and take off each winter.
Much love for the DIY

yea, once i get the seat fabric stuff pulled tight and re-attached, and pop the seats back in, I'll give a full scoobymod style walkthru of this one. Basically, you take the fabric off from around the pass though, cut about an inch of foam out of each side of the seat-back around the pass though, and reattach the fabric. You have to cut the plastic divider between the seat and the trunk as well, and file down the brackets holding it a bit.
I also put some 3 1/4 inch wide strips of styene (modeling plastic) inside the fabric to make a nice smooth edge where i had to cut. the foam doesn't like to cut very straight, so the styrene kind of idiot-proofs it.

yeah, i managed to put 2 155 cm boards thru that pass thru with no problems.

I've got big feet (I'm 6'4") so I can't even get one board through...my short board is a 159 burton dominant, and the long big board is a 164 ride yukon...both are really wide boards.
| andy | 09-21-2004 05:00 PM |
ya im the same i got a K2 spitfire wide my boots are size 11
| CoopsCustomz | 09-21-2004 06:20 PM |
I think its tight, and would do it if I didnt have a wagon :D I say good job! How much cutting did you have to do? Does the seat already have hinges?
| DOHCammin | 09-22-2004 02:11 AM |
good idea...I ride a 159 dominant. I gave up trying to make it fit and bought a yakima rack.

i had to cut about an inch off either side of the opening. My boards are 12" wide at the tips, and 10" around the middle. The stock pass through is 9" or so, and I cut it to 11"
I've got a rack too, but like the clean look and lack of whistling without a rack.

hmm, for some reason, i doubt this would work for a wakeboard... =(
board much wider.. bindings much taller... ideas?

stand the wakeboard up? like on the toe or heel edge? mabye you could fit 2 if you put em base to base. you could also probably get a snowboard into the stock passthru by standing them up like that.
but my car is a 96 impreza, with no folding anything in the back......... which is why i'm getting a rack. and i ski anyway, so the snowboarders can go hack up their own cars  ................. but whatever gets you on the hill, that's what matters!

man blackcomb is da sheeeet, i almost went to their summer class for freestyle riding, but then i realized i suck in comparison to some of the actual pros they bring down there
| chicago04wrx | 09-22-2004 04:36 PM |
Cant you fit four if you had them on their edges?
| quest | 09-22-2004 07:02 PM |

yea, it's pure heaven up there...it's nice and cheap for americans too, with the crappy value of the canadian dollar.
You totally should have gone to the summer camp too. tons of top pros up there and riders of all different levels. Even if you suck, you'll leave there a whooooole lot better.

i couldn't even fit one in without forcing it before. If the boards on an edge, it hits the end of the trunk and the tip of the pass through thing.

my wakeboard fits in the back of my trunk... and its a 142, are WRX's trunks smaller then the 2000's RS?
| subiekid | 09-22-2004 08:39 PM |
roof rack
| Laugh Damon | 09-22-2004 08:50 PM |
yeah, I would do a roof rack but its too expensive, and I have a 2 door and it would look like crap because there would be "support" bars all over the place.
so... I just take my rear seats out when I head up to the mountains.
