flaming tailpipes

Hi - I saw this: http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?ThreadID=191846 over at scoobynet. I thought it looked like a pretty insane idea. I'm guessing flaming tailpipes are illegal in the US, correct? Would this circuit even work with a Legacy? Or are they too efficient? So, anyone have anything like this? Thanks!

Another way for a tail pipe to flame is when unburnt gasoline is in the exhuast and the car backfires. I think thats how it works but Im not too sure.

Myself, Boostup, and Hondaslayer all spit flames without any extra gizmos (with or without cats). :D

This was just on the show Super2ner on TNN yesterday. Wierd. Anyways there is a kit you can buy for really cheap, and are very easy to install. The problem is you can have no cats on tou exhaust.

mbiker97 on a side note I have a question. I too have no cats and spit a little flame when it backfires, but this got me thinking. Because I have no cats only a straight pipe from the start of the down pipe out how can I pass emmisions?

I agree. However, I was remembering back some years ago (when most cars in the parking lot were Nova's, Mustangs, GTO's, and stuff) that the "flames" were a cool item. Would it have been called "rice" back then? -idle thoughts before falling asleep:lol:

If most of the exhaust is on hangers (?) then you should be able to have a muffler shop make you two exhausts :-)
I've heard of this being done in Nashville, where smog tests are mandatory. You have them cut the pipe before the cat, and put a flange on there. then you have one exhaust with a decent cat, and a crappy cat-back, all on hangers, and possibly utilizing another flange or two.
Then, you have your mac-daddy "test pipe" that you put in downstream from the first flange. voila! everything could be changed over easily before an autocross or drag race, and you would be perfectly street legal other times :-)
I hope this helps.......

Over the weekend Trucks! on TNN did an install of a flame kit. The kit was made by autoloc based out of hillsboro, Oregon. Don't know if they havea website. Anyways it invloved a spark plug in the exhaust, and soiem wiring up front so that gas would get exhausted wihtout being lit. You cant have cats to do this setup. There is a swithc you mount in the cabin to enable the falmes. It looked really good on the hot rod truck he installed it in. The show should be in reruns if you want to catch it. I think this mod looks badass on old hot rods, but other than fast and furious, ive never seen them on a newer car.

The easy way to find out if you can spit flames on your car is this:
Have your buddy take a propane torch and put it under your muffler tip and rev your car in neutral. It work when I tried it, just for curiosity's sake, but then again I am also catless. It was pretty cool though cause my car shoots a flame out about 4'. So I guess if i ever dicided to I could put this kit on my car. I would make a DIY kit from junkyard parts, it would be w/o the autoloc kit cause Truckin' even said that it stops the fuel from being ignited by pausing the ignition(or something like that) and if used for long enuff would wash down the cylinder walls after awhile and cause engine damage. If you dont have any cats I bet your car can be a flamethrower like mine w/o the autoloc kit.
Parts needed:
coil
plug/plug wire
wiring
switch
slight installation knowledge

I guess I didn't mention this in my original post - but I would be doing this merely as a joke. I have a legacy L wagon. It isn't any super cool car. I just think it would look hilarious to have flames coming out the back of a wagon. Anyways, what is this cat thing you talk about? and how hard is it to remove? And would this make my care pollute more?

please tell me your joking.
if not it is a catalitic converter. It is between your header and muffler. its about a foot or so long attached to the header and mid pipe. unbolt to remove (you may want a pie to go in the gap that you make in the exhaust) also your CEL will light up for a faulty cat you need to get a fix for that. Yes your car will pollute a lot more and if you live in an emmissions zone then you can't do it and pass.
Lucky for me I have no emissions here and for 50 bucks I had a custome header back 2.25" exhaust made(not including muffler). I shoot flames naturally when hard driving shifts. So does my brother in his rx7 accept he has two duel mufflers and he gits 4 4" flames.
