5/07/2006 Monterey, CA- The Grand Am Cup 200 at the 2006 US Sports Car Invitational can be characterized by many things: seam-busting field sizes, numerous cautions, and intense green flag action. But for Subaru and GOTO:Racing, it brought a series debut, and the marques first Top 10 finish.
I had only dreamed about a debut like this, said Brian Lock after stepping from the car to the cheers of a crowd Subaru fans waiting for him in the paddock, To finally run a Subaru in a series like this, with cars and drivers like this, and be competitive; it was amazing. I had a smile on my face the whole time.

Starting in 22nd position, the Lock brothers managed to quickly move the Legacy through the pack, in a race where green flag laps were at a premium. Multiple incidents in the GS category brought out a total of 7 cautions, making opportunities for pit strategies numerous, but confusing. Good racecraft, on track and in the pits, was key to a good finish.
Considering our practice times were only par for the field, we werent expecting to find ourselves so high so early, said Chris Lock, I was presented the chance to take 4 positions into the first turn, and took it. Then I just started passing people. Looking at my MOTEC, I determined I was not going faster than I had been. The race pace was just slower, so I just kept driving around people.

Take off anything that made it go faster :)... Seriously though, in Grand-Am the car must be Stock. 100% absolutely stock except for sways bars, coilovers, and saftey gear. USTCC allowed us an aero package, open exhaust rules, and about 200 less lbs.
So for Grand-Am we put the stock glass back in and added a 50lb ballast box. We took off our cusco wing and custom front splitter, and replace the Helix exhaust from Gruppe-S with the stock exhaust and mufflers.

The only set in stone date is Phoenix this weekend because the rig is already there :). We plan at least two more events unless we land a decent sponsor that would facilitate more. Our top choices for events, in order of concreteness, are: Miller Motorsports Park, Mid-Ohio, 3 Rivers, Barber, the 12 Hour at VIR.
Pick two(maybe three) from that list and you would have our remaining 06 schedule.

I got to take a decent look at the car in the tech line, and it looked great. It got the attention of everyone on our team, being the first Subaru we've seen in GAC.
A top 10 finish for a car and team new to Grand-Am Cup is a HUGE accomplishment with the size and depth of the field as it is now.
Would you mind if I came over and took a closer look at the car this weekend at Phoenix?

Of course, we won't mind. Come on over. We have a little white 26' trailer and a 38' greenish coach. Of course you will probably notice the car too.
Thanks for the compliments, BTW. We are extremely optomistic for more good showings. We think the car and the team is capable of this and more.

Hello,
Congrats on the debut!
My TiVo is giving me grief right now (freezing up, wah!). Is the race still going to be televised on Speed, May 13 (1PM) and May 15 (noon)?
It's incredible! For years, we all pined for a Subaru in professional road racing. Gary and I started the process in USTCC, you guys picked up that ball, and this year, two teams are debuting in televised national level pro-road racing circuits! Add to that the potential with Irish Mike's efforts, and we're (Subaru racing fans) lucky as heck so far...
and next year, if ESX and/or GOTO can step up their programs to full season efforts, Subaru fans will be plain old spoiled rotten! :D
Great showing!
Joel

I think I saw the Legacy's back end once during the whole 2 hour boardcast ...

Yeah, I cant believe that. Brian running in sixth most of the race all I get to see is stupid cobalts. At least Gary and the Sti got some mention the LBGP race.
