Seibon hood sucks. part 1

Matth3w 02-10-2007 03:38 PM

Seibon hood sucks.
This hood is garbage. The total price of the hood is going up another $200 to have it clear coated. I know other people have had clouding issues with their Seibon hoods and seemed to be satisfied with the results after clear coating. The person is going to charge me $190 for three layers of clear coat with prep work. Is there anything special I should ask them to do?

Also, just to further hopefully steer people away from this hood, it developed a crack near the hood scoop for no reason (I never slam my hood, abuse it, etc etc) about an inch long.

I wouldn't wish this piece of crap hood on anyone. The sad part is, I also have a Seibon carbon fiber trunk which is immaculate.

Just to give an idea, I have spent over $70 in different buffing, polishing, compounds, etc etc in attempts at fixing this hood without clearcoating it. I have used a deliberate process of rubbing compound, polish, wax, etc and it lasts about ten days before you have to do it all over again. Maybe some people would be happy but I prefer good parts when you are paying good money for parts.

The sad part is, this hood was bought last April/May. It was exposed for two weeks while I was on leave and received three coats of wax. It was then covered for 9 months. In that time of zero exposure to the sun or use or exposure to heat, it became cloudy.

What crap.

EDIT: Here are the before pictures (I am taking it in tomorrow to have it clearcoated). Obviously the ****ty crack and bubbles are not going to be fixed by the clearcoating. I wish I could capture the hazing better but you have to see it in person.

My VIS isn't much better. I have stress cracks in the resin of the scoop. Then some asshat keyed the top 10" so it got a shot of clear coat for added protection. Then about 2 weeks ago I noticed a new crack forming in the hood right where the scoop is. The next morning I went to leave for work and noticed the crack grew from the scoop all of the way across the hood diagonally to the drivers side headlight. :furious:

I'm beginning to think that if VIS and Seibon make crap hoods carbon fiber then they must all have issues. I was going to sell my OEM stuff but I think I'm eventually going to put them back on.
MikalsWRX 02-10-2007 06:17 PM

Maybe you got a bad batch. That happens sometimes. Ive had the same Seibon hood for 3 years on 2 different cars. And still no problems. Did you buy the one with or without UV? How much did you pay?
Matth3w 02-10-2007 06:47 PM

I wasn't told if it had or didn't have UV protection. I think I paid 5 or 600 from a vendor on here.
wrxzboost 02-10-2007 06:53 PM

wow...good to know. i've always heard of cheap hoods/trunks having issues, but wouldn't doubt these more expensive companies. personally, i'd never settle for cf because of those possible problems. i guess it was inevitable that replacing a hood which weighs almost the same as carbon fiber would bite you in the ass!
Matth3w 02-10-2007 08:54 PM

that's what i was hoping (when i bought a seibon). but it sucks. the vendor tried to help me out, but the problem is the hood has an unrelated rock chip and i sold off the cf scoop (i use my wrb scoop) so it is too much of a hassle to return, or try to return.

Alot of times you will get a hood without the UV protection and will go bad in a few months. But the Vendor should know this. Also the vendor could have just said it was a Seibon just to get rid of it. That really sucks. The only reason I went with a CF hood was I was tired of all the dings and the paint chipping of the stock one. I knew I wasn't going to save any weight.
Matth3w 02-10-2007 11:33 PM

I can't remember which vendor it was to be truthful. Honestly, they were trying to be a help when I first had problems but the scoop is gone, I have a rock chip, etc etc. And they weren't even sure Seibon would take care of it or not.
Matth3w 02-10-2007 11:47 PM

CVR Motorsports is who it was. Good people, bad product.
subaru3169 02-11-2007 03:46 AM

ya my seibon hood is kinda getting there.. it's not cloudy at all, but the cf is fading.. and i mean FADING in color.. it's turning into a dull yellow.. i guess i could leave my car out in the sun all day<if it doesn't rain> for a while and tell ppl it's actually carbon kevlar
Matth3w 02-11-2007 09:49 AM

Truthfully I forgot about that. THe hood has large bubbles on the sides that are yellow. They arent completely noticable because of their location.
Matth3w 02-15-2007 04:47 PM

Bump so you can see the nastyness.
Matth3w 02-15-2007 06:22 PM

ttttttttttttt
CVR Motorsports 02-15-2007 09:03 PM

After I re-read your post, it definitely had to be a bad batch. Out of the dozens and dozens distributed since we havent had any reports about fade or anything similiar. As I had pm'ed the OP, a lot of factors come into play when things like this happen but we dont want to seem like we are sticking up for anyone for the sake of sales. We back our customers FIRST before any manufacturer, no matter what. Matth3w, my offer still stands if youd like, sorry you had to go through the inconvenience but just say the word :)

Chris @ CVR
Matth3w 02-15-2007 09:11 PM

What can we do if I am without the original scoop?
CVR Motorsports 02-15-2007 09:13 PM

Read my last pm again :)
Matth3w 02-15-2007 09:14 PM

Plus, I can't be without a hood on Fort Hood the military police will eat me up.
Evol 02-16-2007 01:17 PM

didn't you say you still had your stocker?
AlxSti 02-16-2007 01:19 PM

damn im glad i didnt buy a cf hood when i had my accident. fitment issues.. fading.. keeping it latched.. oh.. and the stock sti hood is actually lighter AND disperses heat better.
Matth3w 02-16-2007 02:10 PM
didn't you say you still had your stocker?
locked up and stored away
Matth3w 02-16-2007 04:33 PM

Ok, need your opinions. The guy who cleared my hood said there are some bubbles that he can soft buff away when it gets warmer. Is it usual with three coats of clear to get small bubbles? I haven't seen it yet, but just curious.
Matth3w 02-16-2007 05:41 PM

well i picked it up and put it back on. he definately had me pick it up too early as i got fingerprints lightly in the clearcoat putting it back on. however, he said that those as well as the bubbles will easily buff out when he lightly sands it and buffs it once it is completely hardened in a few days. i guess we will see.

as for the clarity, the cloudiness is completely gone so all in all, if the stuff buffs out it will be decent looking minus the bubbles courtesy of seibon and the small crack, also courtesy of seibon.
FWD WRX 02-16-2007 07:13 PM

i had the Seibon CWI hood for over a year with no issues, still looked shiny as when i first got it used. The only bad thing was that i swapped the reverse scoop out for their CF STI Hood Scoop, it didn't sit flush so there were stress cracks in that area. the hood scoop hazed up pretty bad every few months but some rubbing compound and wax took care of it
Matth3w 02-16-2007 07:15 PM

i think once he buffs it out it will be pretty nice. im still bummed that i had to pay the extra money to make it look right. even still i would only say its maybe 85%. i might be picky though. we will see and ill post pics thurs/fri when i have it buffed out.
subaru3169 02-16-2007 10:11 PM

i guess that's what happens when you get cf parts for the exterior=/

personally, i'm gonna paint my hood like wrxguyinusa when he had his bugeye.. the full cf look is kinda icky on me now
Matth3w 02-16-2007 10:12 PM

eh i like the look. always have.
2slofouru 02-16-2007 10:17 PM

Perty parts FTW. Sucks about the crack, but did you buy it for looks or performance? If it is lighter than stock (don't think it is), why not paint it to match the car, then you have high performance with stock looks. Otherwise, ouch.
toulakid 02-16-2007 10:23 PM

how much did u pay?
NewSTI 02-16-2007 10:25 PM

that's werid.. my no name SYMS replica spolier still good...however, if you really want good product , then you should got for some JDM CF hood, it'll cost alot more, but better quality for sure...either way, all CF under the sun for a long time will do the same thing.
Matth3w 02-16-2007 11:11 PM

read the thread. first off, youre wrong. ive had CF parts on my last two cars for years. second, it wasnt under the sun for a long period of time.
