Retro'd my peanuts... part 1

steverx05 03-01-2007 04:38 PM

Retro'd my peanuts...
It seems like lots of people are doing retrofits these days, so I figured I would dive in and build a set of my own projector headlights for my 2005 WRX. I was originally going to pick up a set of STI headlights and call it a day, but it was too much money for me to spend all at once, so I decided it would be better to just piece together everything I would need for the retro over several weeks. I wound up saving some money doing it this way and I am VERY pleased with the results.

I want to thank Caesar (lightwerkz.net) for helping me out with a couple questions I had along the way too. :) These lights don't look anywhere as nice as his do, but I think they turned out pretty good for my first retro.

TSX projectors
E46 shrouds
STI ballasts
Phillips 4300k bulbs

A couple questions? ;) I could have written a book for this guy :)

Good job! Dont you say its not as good as mine because it looks very very clean and professional. I dont see anything wrong with it and your pics are enough to tell me the story...

You deserve plenty of credit for this job you....

Maybe you can eloborate on how long this took? Was it labor intensive? Etc...Id like to hear it from someone doing it for the first time. Did you get everything right the first time? Thanks!

Haha, yeah you did answer quite a few questions man, I really appreciate all your help through the whole thing.

And to answer your question... I would have to say the entire retro took me about 3 weeks from start to finish, but this was because I didn't have much free time at all and I was basically just doing little bits of it here and there and most of it on the weekends when I had time. Also, my garage is FREEZING and this caused me to give up and quit some nights when even my portable heater couldn't keep me warm enough to work on the lights.

I think I got most things right the first time. I did wind up re-sanding and re-painting my shrouds after I changed my mind on what color I wanted them. I was going to try to keep them chrome at first but I failed at this on my first attempt :p I just took my time and went slow with everything else and it wound up turning out pretty good.
Looks great, but how do you aim them?
The projectors are mounted onto the stock reflectors, so you can still use the stock leveling screws to aim them once they are on the car. Now...getting the projectors lined up on the reflectors when building the retrofit is a whole different story ;)
are your headlights tinted, or is that just the paint?
No tint on the lights, just a combination of a bad lighting from no sun today, the dark housing of the lights, and my subpar photography skills.
washer mod? looks good...
I originally wasn't going to do the washer mod, but when I was testing the projectors, one of them actually needed a couple washers and some experimenting to get the cutoff to look nice and sharp. Just the nature of the TSX's.

Ok...so after I got everything installed and aimed...I noticed my passenger side beam was looking a little weak at night. After driving around some more, I realized that there was something wrong with it. When I was testing the lights during the fabrication they looked pretty good but something was a little off on the passenger side. I thought I had it fixed before I sealed everything up, but after driving with them on the car, I found that it needed some more tweaking.

So...today I did a little tweaking and some creative bulb spacing and finally got the passenger projector to look just as good as the drivers side. Now everything is aimed and looks amazing. I'll get some pictures up here soon to share with everyone :)

Ok... I got a couple of night shots. I think the lights turned out pretty good for my first retro...they're not perfect but they should do until I build an s2k retro :) Oh yeah..and the passenger projector looks like it is way high in the first picture but if you see it in person, its actually pretty close in height to the other one.

(^^In this picture my car is on a hill pointing up at my garage, that's why the lights are shining so high up)

LightWerkz 03-11-2007 11:16 PM

those like amazing. seems like that bulb spacing we spoke about worked out very well..
steverx05 03-11-2007 11:23 PM

Yeah...the passenger side was looking pretty weird before I tweaked it some. Now they look like they're supposed to at night. I love it :)
scarsofterror 03-12-2007 01:41 PM

nice job man!! i like the all black look.
ragnarok 03-13-2007 10:28 AM

looks awesome!, how do you accurately place the projectors into the reflectors? i mean, the lowbeam and highbeam is on the same reflector right? c'mon share some tricks :p
LightWerkz 03-13-2007 11:02 AM

trial and error. you keep making adjustments till its level..

HAHA yeah...LOTS of trial and error. The projector goes into the low beam reflector and you keep the use of the stock high beam section of your lights.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, they're much appreciated :)

nice retro on your nuts. they look solid
