Grand Am Cup - Barber Motorsports Park - SPOILER!!@
Congrats to the ICY team for their 2nd place finish!!

gotta love the rain
trhoppe 07-30-2006 11:03 AM

Actually it didnt rain during the race. As soon as it started raining, the race got called by the officials. The people that made their 2nd pit stops before the race got called got own3d by the people who didnt.

It was kind of a shame for Grand Am to call the race for a bit of rain.

you mean someone other than NASCAR called a race due to rain
M 07-30-2006 01:27 PM

it's the same owners in grand am. france family owns nascar and grand am. ALMS >> grand am
Rally_wgn 07-31-2006 12:03 AM

actually it called for a tornado / severe weather warning. apparently Mid-Ohio shook them up a bit. They considered a restart but with only 20 minutes left they decided otherwise. It was a great race! Unfortuantly the GoTo crew had car trouble but Gary and Brian were tearing thru the pack, especially at turns 5 and 11. Both Leggys were able to outbrake nearly every competitor at these two turns.

Frankly I have never cheered for a car more in my life, it was great fun!

The Goto crew was really great to me and my dad and buddy Fred. They made us feel like part of the crew. I wish we could have stayed for the cook out on Friday. It was also great having met Tom, Tom and Nathan who had a team radio for spotting on turn 11 we got the inside scoop on the action on the track including Brian's near miss on 11, whew it was a close one.

Too bad someone threw the gremlins in the trunk before the race.

The ICY team drove a great race and as Tom pointed out above, they used the time they gained to their advantage when the dark clouds of doom started to roll over the paddock area and sent the spectators scattering.

We helped GoTo secure the car and talked with Steve and the crew before they packed up the new race rig to head home. I hope the gremlins get lost before Miller MP in Utah. I would love to see them on the podium with ICY.

I'll post pics as soon as I have some.

Grand AM >> ALMS (not subies in ALMS :) )

Yep. The clouds heading towards the track actually looked worse than what hit Mid-Ohio. I believe that the track lost power between the time the race was red flagged and the race was called, which may have contibuted.

Congrats to ICY on their 2nd place finish. Hooray for anyone but the Cobalts! :D

(Unoficially now back within striking distance of the ST championship, as well as having the two cars tied for first in the GS championship)

EDIT: GS cars are 1-2 seperated by 1 point, ST car in 2nd, now 9 pts out of first. Coming into this race, there were 4 GS cars (7 GS drivers) within 1 point of the championship lead. The cars finished 4-5-6-7, and are now seperated by a whopping 4 points. This is totally nuts to be in the middle of)

^lltybillion. I met them at Summit Point at Hyperfest few weeks ago and the one driver was a real dick at the drivers meeting after practice. Apparently, it came back to bite him in the ass because he was DQed for saturdays race even though he took home first. :D

Just for clarification, the Saturday race in referece was at Summit, right? AFAIK, there were no legality issues with the Cobalt at Barber, they were just having all sorts of mechanical issues.

I don't have any personality problems with the drivers I have met. Eric Curran was my instructor for my SCCA Driver's school, and has driven for Turner Motorsport before, and Jamie Holtom, his co-driver, seems to be a nice kid from having met him through Eric. We're usually paddocked near them, and we have both helped each other out if needed. For example, we let them borrow or welder this weekend. Of course, it could be the other guys that went to Summit, who I haven't met.
Bonzo 07-31-2006 04:29 PM

did you see that one DP car take that digger? Holy sudden stop batman.
Rally_wgn 07-31-2006 06:01 PM

Hey Bonzo, no we left about 10:30 local for VA. It was been televised and the GT and DP cars arent subaru's so we werent as interested.

Actually, the race was called a few minutes prior to the rain but the Mid Ohio incident was definitely the reason why it was called. There was a full course caution do to an incident on track and then it was unfortunately red flagged because of threatening weather rolling in. It look nasty and poured for quite a while, making packing up interesting. The lightning was wicked!!

As for the teams who got owned, that was all just a losing gamble. Some of them were just making their first pit stop under that last full course caution before the race was called and that is what cost them the race. (For thoughs who do not know, Grand Am requires you to make one pit stop w/ driver change) Endurance racing is 30% car, 30% driver and 40% strategy. You have to have all the right equipment, superb drivers and great minds working in your pits to make a good finish possible.

It was great to get a Suby on the Grand Am Podium. It just goes to show you that a wagon can go FAST!!!!!

Yeah, but since they were no where near second earlier in the race; the results may not be the best measure of 'fastness'. I understand though that they qualified top 10 and top ~20 were all with in 1 second so the wagon is fast, but not becuase of their finish. ;)
Sharky NRK 08-01-2006 09:32 AM

damn I should have gone out to see that one as it is extremely local (couldn't be helped but I can still be :( about it )

the ICY team qualified 6th for the race... fell back a few spots in the beggining, but took good advantage of pitting/driver change under the full course yellow ~ 52 minutes... when they got back on track, only one car in front of them had pitted... so it was just a matter of time until their car found it's way to the front... and if the race had continued for the 12 or so minuted that it was cut short, there was a good chance that they would have won (even more so if the rain had come and everyone pitted for rains)... that said, they finished third behind turner, who was taken out because they had yet to make a driver change.

endurance racing is strategy, and the ICY team seems to have a good amount of experience in getting this done.
kfoote 08-01-2006 11:03 AM

Turner/Salama did finish 4th in ST, and both got points for it. A green flag pit stop was made just before the race ending caution came out, and got trapped a lap down when that caution came out, not that losing a lap made any real differnce in the final standings.

The race had ~45 minutes left when the race ending yellow came out...it may have only been officially called with 12 min remaining, but that was well into the red flag.

franzd: are you saying there wa a 52 minute yellow period??!!? :O
trhoppe 08-01-2006 01:05 PM

AT around the 52 minute mark :)

-Tom
Rally_wgn 08-01-2006 02:03 PM

that doesnt include the nearly 18 min yellow at the beginning of the race when a 'Stang and 997 mixed it up on turn one and into the gravel pit. I'm glad I made it to practice on Friday and Saturday, it was like going to three extra races. As I missed the GT/DP race on Sunday I think I would have been a little disappointed if not for the practice sessions and qualifying sessions.

My Dad said he will now just Tivo Fast Fwd thru the first 20 minutes when the race airs in August LOL

Thanks again for that help. The rain sure comes fast back east. After this and Mid-Ohio, we are starting to get really gunshy about weather. But your help was nice to have, it kept us from getting any of our equipment wet.

Thanks also for the encouraging words. We are 110% amped for Utah. We know our podiums are coming. Running half a season just gives us fewer chances. We are already very exicted about next year too, because we are pretty high in the points standing after only 4 races. Who knows where we could have been if we were at all the events.

the icy camp came in on the second yellow which was around the 52 minute mark...

yes, race was called ~12 minutes from the end which was well into yet another yellow...

needless to say, it always good to see a subaru up front... even more so when it's a station wagon!
Rally_wgn 08-01-2006 10:08 PM

Hey Chris, I assume you guys got home o.k. I hope the new rig was comfortable. I wish I could make it to Utah. I guess I'll have to catch it on Speed, assuming they actually showing racing by then...

I dont know if you saw my note on the ICY rig driver, we saw him broken down on an exit ramp in Virginia on our way home. I hope he got a new tractor and made it home alright.

See ya next year!

The ICY rig did indeed make it home, slightly delayed due to an overheating tractor but home none the less. Made it home with the same tractor though, he just got stuck in a huge amount of traffic in the god awful southern heat and over heated sending the tractor's engine into protection. It was hot though, I don't know how you guys do it down there with the humidity!!!!!!

It was an outstanding weekend to say the least though.

BTW, qualifying a Legacy station wagon in 6th position in it's third outing amongst the SEASONED competition that is in the ST field does indeed constitute a fast wagon, podium finish or not!! Not to mention the Legacy is competing with cars that weigh hundreds less such as the RSX Type S and the Mazda RX8. I think that we should ALL be proud that Subaru is successfully invading the world of professional road racing. Cheers to many successful year of road racing with Subarus!!!

P.s. This is what the Red Flag conditions looked like prior to it all breaking loose. Pretty scary looking stuff....... NOTHING like Mid Ohio though (thank god!!!!)
