Morette's or STI Grill with headlight mod

Well I have been jumping between getting a pair of Morette's or getting an STI grill and doing the headlight mod and was looking for so opinions on one vs the other. I would probably already have the STI grill but getting one in WRB has not been an easy task. Thus I am think aobu going back to my original ideal of paited Morette's. So fire away with your opinions.

I prefered the STi grille w/the headlight mod. I didn't paint my headlights, just took out the amber thingie and replaced the the turn indicator bulb w/Phillips Silversion bulb. I've really grown to like and appreciate the Impreza's headlight shape. Here's a pic:

I'm thinking of doing the headlight mod. Did you get white bulbs that shine amber? If so, could you tell me where you got 'em?
roybfr 08-30-2002 05:47 PM

Very clean looking wagon, are those Volks?

I just installed my STI hood scoop and CF side markers to day. Should be getting some painted mesh STI fog covers soon. I have been trying to get the grill for a few weeks now but people keep seeling out of them in WRB.

One plus about the grill is that it is cheaper by half. So is the Phillips Silversion bulb bright enough to signal for tuning?

Thanks. Still going paint the brake calipers blue w/either Folia Tec or G2. Gotta break up a little bit of all the silver color.

Yes, the wheels are (mouthful...) Volks Rays Gram Lites. Rota makes a replica but I'm not sure if they have the little blue air valves & caps on the rim. The turn signal bulbs are the Phillips Silvervision. They are fully visible in amber when blinking. I also put in amber bulbs in the front side markers just to stay on the "good" side of the Law (as if that's all it takes for me)

very sweet ride. Silver is going to be my next ride.

I had both setups and ended up going with the morettes. I liked the subtle look of the sti grille, but the morettes definately changed the front of the car more...which I was looking for. Most people didn't even notice the sti grill. I had a few people ask me if I just got the pink badge! (From other wrx owners). With the morettes, I get compliments all the time. I liked how it was a departure from the bug eyed look. It's all personal preference though. Do what YOU like the best. I love my morettes (but am selling them to go towards my UTEC fund :D ) and definately made a difference at night.

grille and headlight mod. definitely. no offense, but morettes look as bad as altezza tailights to me. they just look cheap. sorry to offend anyone with morettes.
roybfr 08-31-2002 10:42 AM

James how much are you selling the Morette's for? Are the painted WRB or are the still black?

I like both and am some what indifferent about one vs the other. The STI grill is more suttle, but looks good and the Morette have this mean look to them that I have always liked. If money was not an abject I would get the grill and add a set of JDM projectors and they are my favorites, but I just cant bring my self to spend $800 on a set of head lights.

Here's another combination of unpainted Morettes with the MRT grill and stock badge. The fog covers are genuine $6.99 a pair JC Whitney with custom hinged mounts (got tired of rock chipped fog lenses).

Which wheels are those on the white WRX above?
lawn boy 09-02-2002 09:28 PM

if youre gonna get morette lights, atleast paint them damnit!!! :monkey:
Golfa 09-02-2002 09:41 PM

i like the black unpainted morettes on white, it gives it a nice flavor, black things on white car really accent the car and stand out, leave them unpainted!

thats my .02

Did you have to do any modifications on the foglight covers to make them fit? Do they look like STIs. And lastly could you post a better pic of the foglight covers. Thanks

Personal opinion...On that white car, I would paint the side pieces of the Morettes (those, between the lights and the grill). It would serve to break up all that continuous black.
roybfr 09-03-2002 12:37 PM

Well the decisssion has been made. Ordered a STI grill in WRB this morning and solid fog light covers. I am stealing H8YNERS look :D except my cars WRB, I am running gold Subzeros and no roof rails.

Where did you get you Phillips Silvervision bulbs at?

Troy
H8YNERS 09-03-2002 06:51 PM

I had to order them. I think the web address is something like www.autolamps_online.com (or something close). I will look at the invoice when I get home from work.

Stephen

I assume that you removed the orage bulb cover as the stock buld is just clear. Did you have to bake the head lights and pull them apart to do that or does it come out with the bulb.

BTW If you find the invoice a part number would be great.

Do the headlight mod! I did it, bought amber turn signal bulbs, and then spray painted the bulbs silver with some silver accessory paint. Make sure you tape up the connector area so you don't coat paint over it and make your new amber bulbs not fit in the socket.

A much more inexpensive way to get silver looking bulbs without spending the money on the SilverVision's. Also, they shine VERY amber when using the turn signal but look silver normally :)

Attached is another pic of fog light cover...sorry, my digital camera has a hard time coping with the black/white contrast. The covers are the 7 inch black vinyl coated JC Whitney 15ZH758SW ($6.98 a pair). They fit just right with the proper overlap, so no modifications are necessary. The mounts are just doubled up heavy galvanized sheet metal painted black. One bolt to release one side and swivels out for cleaning. No more rock chips on the lens!

Yes, that was my orginal thinking also. But, now that they have been on a while, the continuous sweep of black across the front makes the car look much lower and wider. The MRT grill seems to work very well with the brighter aluminum accent that gives more 3D depth and sets off the stock black badge just right. To each his own...
ScoobieSnaX 09-21-2002 08:58 PM

My vote is for the morettes. I get people asking me every day...."what kind of car is that?". The STi grille is sweet but not as much of a change as the lights would be :D :D

That wagon is GREAT! Makes me wish I would have bought the wagon... I could take up kayaking! :D
krazedant 09-22-2002 11:31 AM

I dont understand the appeal of the Morettes (no offense to anyone). I think the STi grill with the JDM headlights look the best.
gtguy 09-22-2002 11:33 AM

It's a question of style vs. style/function. The Morettes will provide more/better light, where the STi grille just looks really cool. I have one on order, but will remove the STi badge when I get it. I just like the looks of the grille, compared to stock, and it should look suh-weet with the Prodrive headlights.
