What is the big deal about the STi grill?

Other than the STi badge(s) ("STi makes parts, so it's not like Type-R"), what are the differences? Just how dense the honeycomb is?
Just curious...

Instead of going up and down and being three pieces like the stock one..The sti comes out at a angle to the front bumper,is one piece..mesh is thick and tough, its factory jdm, comes with a lil badge and changes the look of your car..second thing I bought a year ago..looks great..check out subydude for a cheap one.

The biggest downside is the one-piece design - effectively eliminates the use of Morrette headlights. Plan accordingly.
There are STi clone grilles that are also 3 pc. I think the STi is the nicest of the replacement/aftermarket grilles, though

I think the Syms V2 grill is much nicer ...
It also happens to be over double the price which means you don't see it on too many cars

The USDM model 3 piece grill portion is plastic honeycomb styled. I lost a part of it to road debris. The STi JDM grill portion is metal with a rubber coating. I don't anticipate having a problem with debris. I took off the pink STi emblem. Much less "active" looking upfront. I found my car having too much STi up front. I have the foglight covers (two giant STi emblems), the V2 lip (one tiny STi emblem) and the Carbon Fiber Blinker Covers (two medium sized STi emblems). Looks silly when you can count the STi logo 6 times in 6 feet. I am thinking about the replica CF covers without the logo to get rid of two more advertisements upfront.
Someone posed a good question to me. Why does STi insist of marking every piece they make with the logo? I love the parts and the look but can you imagine if every part you put on your car had a huge adverstisement for the manufacturer?

Yeah but then how would people be able to tell it's not a cheap knock-off? :D Spending $300 for foglight protectors kinda says you want to be noticed!

That's because that is the JDM look. Technical + industrial looking with form.
It sounds like you are more into the "Euro" clean, de-badged look which is fine. There are STI replica grilles with no badge but the badges are one way used to tell if your part is real or fake.
I've seen many replica WRX grilles and many of them sucks in quality and fitment, figures for $50

I never said I don't want to be noticed. I like it when people look at my car and think it's sharp.:disco:
I just think it can be overdone. And when I put my STi Grill and STi Front lip both on the same day two weeks ago I quickly realized there was way too much stuff going on up front.
Oh and I got my grill covers from Subydude on a day that he must of felt generous. This was well before he was even close to being a vendor on I-Club about a year ago. Only thing I'll tell you is they were well under $200;) And I got them painted for free cuz some idiot backed into me and I was having the bumper redone anyways.

STI stuff cost an arm and a leg because they don't produce the items in large quantity like APC does, they are all "Made in Japan" and the quality is much highter.
Guy I know bought these replica STI front lip, the thing cost only $150 but it broke easily because it was made of fiberglass and it will cost him another $150 + $100 to paint and install another one.
Why not just spend the $ and buy the real thing. Fog covers is not important but some things are..

Let me start by saying that I love my WRX...but lets face it putting a STi grill on a non-STi WRX is just as pretentious as the Honda guys putting fake 'Type R' decals.

Why do people think putting STI stuff on the car is like putting Type R stuff on a honda civic. Type R is not a parts and development business for Honda, its a type of car. STI is a parts and development business, which also happens to design/create parts for a Car with a full name of "Subaru Impreza WRX STi". If you put STI parts on your car its like puting Mugen (I think they are the honda parts division), or TRD things on, not like Type R stickers.

I like the way you think Hank 3 ! ;)

OK so someone actually made the "but STi is a parts manufacturer" argument...
Here's the difference - the STi grill isn't just some aftermarket replacement grill, it's the grill for a particular car (the WRX STi) and it has particular badges in particular places. The STi grill doesn't have STi on it just because the grill is MADE by STi, it has those badges on it because the grill is designed to BE ON an STi and indicate "hey, this car is a WRX STi". That's why it's different and why it doesn't feel right to me on a WRX. (And is why I would only get replica mesh covers.)
If I did get the STi grill, I'd strip the STi badge off. I think there was a guy on the board who replaced it with the WRX letters, which would be kinda cool, albeit a little too busy for my tastes.

Argument makes some sense but why is that the reason you would only get replica grill covers. The STi grill covers aren't made for the STi. Their made by STi.
And I suppose if I were to have a fresh new set of STi seats front and rear you would probably turn them down in a trade for your WRX seats:lol:

OK, so good point about the fog covers. I guess I wouldn't feel right having them on there with the STi logo. I'd feel even worse if I spray painted the logo on there with a template :) The replicas are so much cheaper, which is nice since the fog covers aren't that hard to steal...
And yes... I would turn the STi seats down... I spent about a million hours installing seat heaters in my stock WRX seats and I'll be damned if I am doing it again :)

Yah I hear that too.
My point that I try to make to a lot of people is this. STi is first and foremost a performance parts manufacturer. But like you said this argument is probably the most overplayed conversation on all the forums. But it comes back to the truth. STi was started as a performance divison to help drive the sucess of the Impreza in the WRC. And no matter what anybody says Mopar is to Chrysler just like STi is Subaru. Or very close to that idea.
Bottom line is this. I think Subaru just plain screwed up naming a version of the Impreza WRX model after this division. I think it ruins it for anyone wanting STi parts cause you run the risk of someone trying to say you're attempting to fool people into thinking it's an "STi". Just not the case for me.

I think that's true of things like the suspension bits, the short shifter, yada yada... but when you have a big honkin STi logo on the front of your car even though you're not driving one, that's where I get righteous :) No one would accuse you of all-show-no-go with the STi suspension kit for instance... but the STi grill isn't really an upgrade, and does anyone buy the STi fog covers because they really think that STi makes fog covers that are worth $100/each?
Anyhoo... My question has been answered and I don't want to rehash the Type-R debate again :)

This debate is always amusing,Im almost thinking like wrxified because our cars sound very close with the STi parts on the front end.Im going to replace the replica STi carbon blinker covers for plain ones i think also lol.
But,1.considering i have the full STi RA suspension do i qualify to wear the badge on the grill?
2.Would having my STi intercooler and JDM uppipe help?
3.Would i embarass myself because my car is probably faster then an STi?
4.And most importantly,,most people around here dont EVEN know what a WRX is,,, let alone an STI
Rudy;)

I think the mesh is a bit different and the replica doen't come painted or with an emblem(sti or the stars) other than that I don't know having not seen the replicas in person.

These STi's don't seem to come stock with the STi grill. Does anyone know for sure if the grill came standard on the MY02 (our MY03) but on the MY01 (our MY02) it was an STi part not stock on the STi version7?
Moral of the story... Do what you like to your car! :D You're not going to please everyone, so you might as well please yourself... errrr... ummmm .... well you get the gist.

I have to agree with WREcks, on the STI's some of the parts might actually be options at the dealer. Mesh foglight covers for example, these are an option as a STI part and not standard issue on the WRX STI car.
I think it comes down to, a lot of the STI parts look very nice and people just want to make their car look a little better and STI sells the parts for that reason. And if a STI part looks good, buy the part and put it on. I mean you can get the STI short shifter as a dealer option, but I don't see any honda dealers putting on type r stickers as an option. I have people come up to me and ask me if my car is an STI, and I say no. I will never say I have a STI because I don't, doesn't mean I won't support STI and their great parts.
