HELP!!*!*&^#)#*: HID kit install with JDM headlights
ARGHGHGH!!!
Ok, first thing is, please don't yell at me for not using the search function--I did, and have been for the past few months and haven't found anything that has helped me enough. (I'm just extra stupid I guess.)
The problem is this:
I got the JDM lights to work, but the HID kit dosn't seem to work. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it:
The HID kit is a "closed circuit" right? Meaning all the wires just kind of connect to each other, the starter, ballast, and the bulb are all just connected to each other, and then the only "opening" in the system are the two wires that I suppose you need to supply the power to--which I did, using the power source from the car. I linked the black wires that ground the JDM headlight to the black wire of the HID kit, red wire that goes directly to the bulb of the JDM headlight to the red wire of the HID kit. Yet, it doesn't light up! So i'm a little stuck, and am not sure where to go from here.
I even changed the fuses to 20A fuses (which the kit states to do) and it still didn't work.
Can ANYONE PLEASE help me...these damn lights had been sitting in my closet for the past 7 months...such torture...
Much appreciated in advance...

Harness man to the rescue!:D
I am ordering one off of him when my lights come in. Hey Jim, I am the haggler that Emailed you yesterday trying to negotiate the price on STI harness.
I had to try right?

Haven't had the chance to do as jimhoyd suggested yet, but please give me more suggestions if you have them guys...the more options I have to try, the better...thanks...

what HID kit are you using?

I'm using an H1 Senko HID kit purchased thru Vivid. They haven't been of any help...

would it be advisable to run a 20A fuse? I blew mine trying to install my HID kit so I am going to try again when I get a new set of fuses.

i think u shouldnt, anything over 15 would pop the fuse, and it is like default so u dont blow ur HID ballast or bulb.
| BlueWRXagon | 08-01-2002 03:33 PM |
Well, I did try both on the fuses. I tried it with the stock 15A fuse, then I read the kit's directions and it stated that a 20A fuse should be used, so I tried that too. No go...
So frustrating having a new toy and not being able to play with it...for several months!
Any more suggestions...please?

are you sure you didn't get one of the HID plugs backwards? I had an issue with mine cuz they could've plugged in either way. no good.:(

I'm pretty sure I got those wires right, at least according to the crappy diagram that came with the kit...but of course I'll check again...thanks.

ya, I just purchased the exact same set up that he has (senko w/ JDM headlamp) I am am where he was on this matter... I have it all toghter, I am getting ready to hook up to the cars wires and had a ? as to which wires I use, and where to ground, I have been searching for days on this subject but pretty much came up empty.... theres just the 2 wires from the HID kit (power & ground) & I just want to know exactly how to wire them....????
| STR8OUT | 05-22-2003 01:48 PM |
Ok, here are revised directions. Install your STI lights and HID's in 2 steps. First, Do step 1 exactly as I list below.
Parts you will need:
2 9005 connectors (these plug into the high beam bulb on the STI lights) Pick them up at Pep Boys or something....
Electric Tape
A couple feet of wire thats about the same size as the STI lights wire.
So you dont get confused, the top of the picture represents standing in front of your car and looking at the stock headlight harnesses. The bottom if the picture represents all the connectors coming from the STI lights.
Step 1.
Get started by wiring them up as I have pictured below. I labled everything this time and I removed the - and the + because Im not sure it really matters.

Step 2.
Once you wire them up as shown above, then get started on the HID install. You WILL need to drill a 1 inch hole in the back of the low beam cap because Im pretty sure all HID kits require that to be done. Please check your HID kit before drilling though... The 1 inch hole is so that you can slide the bulbs connectors through the low beam cap. There should be a rubber boot that will seal in the 1 inch hole you drill. If not then maybe your kit is different.
For wiring the HID's:
You hook the power from the HID ballast to the Green wire on your STI lights. The Green wire is the one coming into the low beam cap. This connection between the Green wire and the + HID wire is usually made inside of the low beam cap. You will see what I mean when everything is in front of you.
You hook the ground wire from the HID ballast directly to the cars chassis. This will require you to extend the ground wire so just use some extra wire you have laying around. The ground wire from the HID ballast does not come into the low beam cap. It stays outside of the low beam cap and runs directly to the cars chassis (I used the bolts located on the inside of each fender)
Please let me know if you have any more questions or hit me up on AOL IM.

STR8OUT,
Thx for the diagram!!! a few questions though, do I ground it where you have that little black shaded box where you have it "splicing" from the green wiren from the LBC?? Also what is the LBC?? sorry I am not educated in these areas, so its kinda greek to me..... Next your diagram is cut off on the bottom, what is that box suppose to be? Is it the HID ballast box?
oops forgot one thing, you mention to connect the power from the HID to the green wire, but in the diagram you have the green shown as a ground???

hehe...
the LBC is the plastic cap the seals the low beam projector housing. the other "cut off" connector is the high beam connections. and yes, green should be positive.
man, next time I remove/sell my lights, I think I'm gonna take massive pics.

Good point. I forgot to mention that....
The plug for that is located behind your glove box. Pull the glove box out and you have to look up and on the right side. The plug say DRL on top of it. Its really hidden back there but its in there. To unplug it you just pull down on it while pressing the lock button (not the door lock button, the button that locks the plugs together:) )

thx for all the help, I got them up and running... Man do they look great!!! Does anyone know if the JDM headlight projector is switched around for the american market so the beam shines more on the right side, mine seem to project more to the left (not good for oncoming traffic)?? Yes I did adjust them so they are correct, but the beam pattern seems to be on the wrong side....
| Mulder | 05-24-2003 08:23 AM |
True JDMs have the RHD beam pattern which is indeed reversed for driving in the US. There isn't much you can do about it although some have undertaken the rather risky procedure of disassembling the lights to modify the internal baffle plates that direct the pattern. The only other option, which is a bit late for you since you already have your lights, is to get a set of EDM lights which are identical to the JDMs except for being LHD.

OR, can anyone tell me which one of the 3 wires from the D plug controls the low-beam and i can wire my bulbs directly?
THANKS MUCH.
