Article about :Travis Pastrana: Complete Nutcase Finds The Hill, Goes Over It
http://www.mph-online.com/mag/features/0060

At the ripe old age of 22,Travis Pastrana's knees bear the scars of 19 surgeries. He's lost count of the number of concussions he's suffered. And a week before we sat down with the motorcycling legend and X Games lunatic showman, he crashed hard during the final lap of the 24-hour Glen Helen off-road motorcycle race, breaking his collarbone and suffering a second-degree separation in his left shoulder.

The racer's string of injuries is as legendary as his bladder-draining stunt work. An innovator of the motorcycle back flip (among other stunts), his aerial tricks have battered his body.

This is why Pastrana has decided to downshift to a safer, more relaxing pastime: sliding a car sideways, often at speeds of more than 100 mph, between trees, rocks, sheer drop-offs, and various other immobile objects. He's a rally racer now. And after only one full season driving in the Rally America Championship, Subaru has signed him to a multi-year contract to race a WRX STI.

Pastrana comes across as the human incarnation of a golden retriever puppyloping gait, wide smile, and ever-enthusiastic demeanor. But this weekend, as Pastrana prepares to hit the gravel on four wheels at the Lake Superior Rally, he's uncharacteristically subdued. He seems tired. His smile is a little tight around the corners. He winces when a fan gives him an overzealous pat on the shoulder.

His doctor told him it would take three months to heal from his week-old injuries, but that wasn't an option he was prepared to accept. At Pastrana's urging, a medical team cobbled together his shattered bones with 13 pins and an extra-thick titanium plate. "The doctor still recommended taking a month off, but I wasn't going to miss this race," says Pastrana.

A newcomer to rallying, he's nonetheless a contender for the top spot at any race in the United States. He finished second at his first race of the 2005 season, battling his way onto the podium beside 59-year-old former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist.

The sport holds an obvious appeal for the extreme-sportsman. Rally races are long and tough, usually lasting a day and a half over hundreds of miles on courses that visit every condition imaginable, from snow and ice to mud. "Most of the guys in the X Games have a passion for rally," says Pastrana. "They all have WRXs at home, and we all race rental cars on the weekend. Sorry, it's probably not good. But,I mean, I've bought a few rental cars, most of the guys on the circuit haveit's just something that happens. So, of course, if you could be given the opportunity to have a really high-horsepower, roll-caged, meant-tobe- jumped rental carI mean, that's basically every action-sports guy's dream."

Ever since his first real effort behind the wheel of a rally car barely two years ago during a lesson at the Team O'Neil Rally School in New Hampshire, Pastrana has exhibited serious, champion-level talent. His hand-eye coordination is uncanny, and,of course, his experience on two wheels has prepared him for some of the challenges of four. "He's used to being sideways, he's used to being in the air,and he's not scared," says Lance Smith, a rally veteran whose shop, Vermont SportsCar, has backed a succession of American rally champions before Pastrana.

At an event in Colorado mid-way through the 2005 season, Pastrana aptly demonstrated his particular brand of fearlessnessor at least physical resiliencewhen the back wheel of his Subaru WRX STI slipped off the road at 113 miles per hour, launching the vehicle into a spectacular nine-and-three-quarters rollover. Before the car had even stopped moving, Pastrana turned to ask navigator Christian Edstrom if he was alive. After receiving a groggy affirmative, Pastrana joyfully slapped the wheel of his crippled car and exclaimed, "That was a hell of a ride!"

Smith,a mentor and friend to Pastrana as well as his team's principal, was horrified to watch the accident unfold in metal-twisting, brain-sloshing real-time from his vantage point at the side of the road. The car was obliterated, but the grim incident didn't appear to faze Pastrana. "This kid gets out of the car like it was an amusement park ride," Smith says. "In some sense,he's a complete nutcase."

But Pastrana clearly feels safe cocooned inside a car. Safer, at least, than on the motorcycles on which he's built a reputation for riding to the edge. At 14, Pastrana became the youngest-ever World Freestyle Motocross Champion and he's a three-time X Games gold medalist for freestyle. He was go-karting at age two,his parents bought him a 50-cc motorcycle when he was just four, and by the time he was seven, he was competing against teenagers and winning.

But as injury compounds injury, he's already accepted that his long-term future on two wheels is limited. He's simply not built for it. He's six-foot-one, while the best freestyle competitors are at the shorter end of the five-foot range. "At almost a foot taller than the rest of the top guys out there, stuff gets pulled and twisted. Most of the tall guys blow out knees and have short careers," he shrugs.

"I love racing. I can't imagine living without racing. I'm hoping rally will be that for me," Pastrana says of his opportunity to extend his sell-by date in motorsports. "But in motocross, you couldn't be competitive at 40. Not that 40 is old, but you just don't see it. To see a guy like Stig Blomqvist still very competitive and winning the U.S.Championship at the moment, it's promising."

And Pastrana certainly has the people skills to keep himself a fan favorite well into middle age. Consider that after several grueling hours in a competition car during the average rally, he may have 20 minutes to recover before the next leg of the race. While other competitors hide out in their trailers to rejuvenate, Pastrana signs autographs and gives his trademark "thumbs up" for cell-phone snapshots. "He's very easy to get along with," says co-driver Edstrom. "He's probably the guy out there who had the most fun all year."

Pastrana will eventually get to see how fun the big leagues of rallying are. He'll compete in a handful of rallies as a rare American on the ultra-competitive Production Car World Rally Championship circuit. His first world-rally event will be this winter's Corona Rally in Leon, Mexico; his ultimate goal is to compete in the top-shelf World Rally Championship. Pastrana has as good a shot at getting there as anyone on the American rally scene, but even if he doesn't make it, he'll still be racing.

And at least he'll have more metal around him if and when the inevitable crashes come.

I hear his co-driver hangs out around here.

Nice article, though I resent the use of the word "groggy." I was anything but groggy.

HAHAHAHA! You'll have to refer Mr. Pastrana here then. ;)
He sounds like a great guy and I'm sure many people would like to meet him (it's not often there's an American in the WRC...). You also get an extra +10 points in my book for being a longtime NASIOC member.

I assume you're going to be his co-driver for the WRC as well?
I agree, getting all pissy when I was hanging out with Petter's wife and kid on Sunday, because I didn't have the proper badging. Dude, maybe Glen Invited us in when we found his cell phone.
I didn't get pissy, I questioned you on it because I knew you did not have credentials and I lost all respect for you after you were being a tool telling me about how you plan to make counterfeit credentials for you and your friends next year  I certainly was not going to let you get away with sneaking in after that crap

And you were not "hanging out" with Petters wife and kid, you rudely invited yourself to sit with down with them

And BTW people later asked me if I knew who the obnoxiously loud Americans were

And very nice of you to bring this up here, Wagon and I hang out often and he was just teasing me

It could go on and on until a mod locks a good thread so I am pulling down my comments.
shoracer 03-10-2006 02:35 AM

Back on subject, Travis Pastrana is going to do great things for rally in America. He just needs to stay away from the pasta in Mexico.
Subaru RT USA completes Mexico reconnaissance.

Subaru Rally Team USA drivers Travis Pastrana and Ken Block successfully completed the reconnaissance portion of the Corona Rally Mexico - round three of the FIA World Rally Championship, last week.

The team performed two days of reconnaissance in order to develop their skills at creating pace notes. This also gave the duo the opportunity to look at the Mexican stages which they plan to compete on next year. The American team, run by Vermont SportsCar, is exploring a possible entry in the Production Car WRC in 2007.

The two drivers have little experience with pace notes because their Rally America National Championship events supply identical stage notes to all competitors. Therefore this trip to Mexico represented an important learning experience towards developing the skills necessary to successfully compete in the WRC. To accelerate the learning process the team brought with them expert WRC co-driver Jakke Honkanen, who runs a highly respected rally co-driver school in Finland. Honkanen, along with US rally legend John Buffum spent the entire week with Pastrana and Block along with their co-drivers Christian Edstrom and Alex Gelsomino, ensuring they got the most out of their time spent in Mexico.
Travis is a cool guy, but the internet is not his bag. In fact, when I email him, I have to text him to tell him to check his email. Practical, that! And yeah, unless he fires me, I'll be his co-driver in any WRC events we do.

And thanks for the low-member-number props. It's so very OT! :D

Yes, great post on Travis, he's quite a gentleman. But don't forget it takes two to win a rally... Both Travis and Christian hold great promise in bring more US attention to the WRC; I predict 2007 will be a very interesting year in world wide rally. I hope they can learn to aks for Redbull in Finnish :)
...plan to make counterfeit credentials for you and your friends next year....

Yup very uncool on both accounts; behavior is everything in life.

Yep, nice writeup on all accounts. As Peter Griffin likes to say 'Pretty freakin sweet!'
I hope they can learn to aks for Redbull in Finnish :)
It's said/aksed like this: "Can I have a Redbull, please?" They all speak pretty fluent English in Finland. :D

True, its amazing how everone over 50 in Finland speaks engrish there, and, yes, better than I do...

IIRC its: Toisiittiko Redbull huvaa

Based on lingering lower GI side effects from Mexico, I think next years WRC trip will be back to Suomi-land.....

He also crashed in the whoops which I could not find a pic of. That is what kept him out of the main.

Here is a near crash... pretty cool http://discount-poolsupplies.com/pastrana_loop.wmv
He won his day qualifier and tried a backflip over the finish line, crashing in the process. The AMA was not amused and gave him a stern warning-even making him sign something acknowledging he was aware his pro license was at risk if he tried it again. Then in the night show, he got into a long and tight battle with Ivan Tedesco in a heat race, which ended in a spectacular crash in the whoops in front of the grandstands.
It's going to be a Duke's of Hazzard horn. You know, "doobie-doo-doo-doobie-doobie-doo-doo-doo-doo!" The horn button in the new car is supposed to be on the co-driver footrest, so yes, hopefully that'll be under my control. I assume the standing rule will be anywhere I see (spectators) in the notes, I hit the horn...
