Paint my muffler..? Opinions and/or techniques wanted

Im toying with the idea of painting my exhaust canister to make it a little more subdued to help avoid attracting the wrong attention. I can take the exhaust down at work and really do a good job painting it. What do you guys think? And what is the best way to do this? Thanks!

they sell high temp paint at pepboys in a rattle can. just use flat black, i think it says like 500 degrees on the can or something like that it holds up

Get it powder coated and then baked on. If your looking of cheap go to home depot and get there high temp paint in a spray can. I think that stuff holds up to 1500*

I have done black too. I think you will want to sand with P800 Grit it before you paint. It is just on stock canisters, It looks good well balanced.

Yes, I was going to take it off and really sand it down good, primer then high temp paint. Do you have any photos of yours?
Thanks
oh, and what grit sand paper do you think?

The paint to use is VHT flame proof ceramic. It is rattle can and survives up to 2000 degrees. I painted my header. uppipe, turbo and down pipe with it. It is holding up very well. Use the primer and then the flat black=stealth. You have to bake it to cure it but you can do this on the vehicle. I would have it media blasted instead of sanding. It will create millions of little pits in the finish for the paint to grip. Buy it at Summit Racing. VHT= awsome paint, Good luck!

sandblast it and leave it if it's stainless. less shine will keep it from attracting the wrong eyes but it will still look like an exhaust.

IMO, just scuff it with a scuff pad, wash it with simple green next, take engine enamel paint/radiator spray paint and paint it with their dark gray or black spray paint, easy as that and it should look good, and not bubble off

back in the day i tried to paint a axleback black, worked until it hit winter, then the paint started to crack and come off..
i sanded/cleaned/painted with grill spec paint and it still came off.. so i gave up
probably your best bet is to just switch to a lower-profile exhaust.. unless your car doesn't see that much snow, cause salt will just go through the paint
... thats from my personal experience

Metal polish for tip = 5 mins.
Taping up tip and side/top/bottom =1 min
Sanding with two different grits = 10 mins.
High temp spray paint, 3 coats, in 20-degree weather, then baking it on with coarse lamps = 30 mins.
final product

I painted my stock exhaust black for fun when I swapped it out to a prodrive oval tip. I wanted to see how it would look so here is the final product. Haven't tested it yet so I don't know if it'll come off or not, but I used the BBQ grill paint that withstands 1200 degrees or something. Scuffed up & then painted.

Bump for more pics/info.
I think Im going to do this tomorrow. I had another weird road incident today. I dont know if my area (which Im new to) is just chock full of a-holes or what. But maybe they see the exhaust and tailgate and drive like aholes on purpose or what, but it seems to happen way too often.
Thanks

When i painted my old can i ran the car so the muffler would get hot and than painted it. It kinda baked the paint on, it dried instantly. I used BBQ flat black paint. Just dont be a dumb ass wear some kind of gloves while handling the exhaust.

I used Rust-Oleam BBQ flat black paint rated at 1200F from Home Depot. 5 bucks a can.
The canister was in good condition so I lightly sanded it down to roughed up the surface.

I have a magnaflow custom turbo back, and the muffler shop has several cans of cheap OSH paint. I asked if it will burn off. And the owner said that anything past 4 feet from the turbo on the impreza is not going to burn or flake off. And till this day (one year) the OSH paint hasnt flaked or burned off my canister, just $.02.

I think it would look pretty good and there are a few different kinds of paint out there that would work fine on the application. I have used 2000f ceramic based rattle can on exhausts in the past and it has always worked out fine, and that was in cleveland where there is a lot of salt during the winters. Good luck and post pics if you decide to do it.

Heres mine...you can't see it that well..but you get the idea...I used the same paint....as above....Holding up for almost 2 years with an occasional touch-up now and then...

....if I have a chance this weekend, I'll snap pics of my Prodrive oval tip. I didn't care for the "blingy", polished finish of the muffler when I installed it nor the attention I believed it would likely attract. IIRC, I scuffed it up with 800 grit and sprayed it with hi-temp, flat-black paint. I did it while it was on the car (taping everything off obviously) with the intention of one day removing it and finishing it up correctly. However, I may just leave it "as is" since it's holding up well and looks good ("stockish").

Thats wild this thread re-emerged. I never did paint my grapefruit shooter. I was kind of afraid it wouldnt look that good when it got dirty and would be a pain to clean. You know how spray painted stuff gets that "texture" and then doesnt clean up nice anymore.
I'm lining up a trade for an SPT exhaust. Hopefully that goes down. :D

Custom 3 inch turbo back, 24 inch resonator, magnaflow 3in/3out muffler flat black OSH paint, no flanges so I guess taking out is a pita. Sounds good with a stock look.
