AAAARRGGGHHH!

I was SO close to the 'Ring a couple summers ago but I just couldn't get up there to see it

I was visiting my cousin who lives in Germany and whose dad goes up to the 'Ring every other month or so with his Nismo-reworked R-34  to play. He was going to take me with him if I could have stuck around for another few days but I had to be back in the States for work by then. I was crushed. It's a dream of mine to do the whole thing, and in a Skyline! *pouts*

I bet you had an awesome time on that course! I like twisty courses, and I also like courses that are long and therefore tough to memorize. Keeps things exciting. Sooo jealous of you ;)

Subie Gal 01-16-2002 07:52 PM

well yeah i liked it... but it was very, very challenging...

but i had Felstead to call out and guide me through every turn...
he knows that place like the back of his hand!!!

it's tricky.... as soon as you think you got a corner nailed...
it drops out on you... or starts bending the other way...

there are loads of elevation changes that really toss ya!

i saw proof of that the few days we were there...
several cars went home with "battle scars"

it was a rush... that's for sure!

Whose Ferrari is that?

I'm a geek and I've got to know whose Ferrari is that???

The sign next to the car is way too blurry, but by the lines and the paint job I'd guess it's Gerhard Berger's 1988 Ferrari F1/87-88C.

Except #28 on the rear spoiler sits right under the Goodyear sticker, where as other pics of Ferrari F1/87-88C show the # about 6-10 inches below the Goodyear logo.

Uggggh

Max.

You can buy track simulators that will teach you the turns before you go. You can also buy onboard cam track runs. I have a couple on "Lap of the Gods!" that I saved for the big nascar changeover at speedvision =(. this is what bigscreens are for!:) Isn't the 'Ring about 78 turns? PS can I have your autograph?
Subie Gal 01-17-2002 10:20 AM

no idea who's cars those were in the museum...
there were too many for me to remember! :D

it was 3 stories high... TONS AND TONS of stuff!

78 turns? felt more like 150!!!!
and John drove that 2.0 Subie Sport with 4 people in the car and STILL managed a 10min lap time... NOW THAT was fun!!!

Autograph? erm... hehehe funny :)

LMAO;)

so what was your time!

I really do have to go some time. But where to find a WRX rental in europe?
But where to find a WRX rental in europe?
Good question. I was wondering specifically: is there a company near the 'ring that will rent you a decent car (pref with a cage and harness) for a day of fun?
JamesC 01-17-2002 01:43 PM

Most of the ringers who can't bring their own cars rent regular street cars. Nice to start with low power anyway :)

I rent from AutoEurope look under Sports/Premium for interesting offerings. TDi's are fun too though! I'll ask on the list and see if anyone knows of anything.

If you didn't meet the GT3 owner, Subiegal, then it probably wasn't Anders (who I believe John knows well from the ringers list).

There are a couple of videos of laps of the ring at this site.

http://www.8200rpm.com/index.php?p=1&t=3&lang=en

You'll probably need at least a cable modem to view them due to the size. The one of the Impreza is shakey because it looks like the passenger was hand holding the camera. There used to be one of a Lotus Elise chasing a Corvette around the ring, but it isn't there anymore. It's possible I saw that one on another site though.
JamesC 01-17-2002 04:30 PM

I think that Joerund's site is the best by far:

Video Downloads here

He's the R1 rider in most of these.

I looked at that auto europe site - you can rent a diablo from them! Only $16,000 a week!

I had like 20 seconds to view this thread in Monte so heres a more complete posting.

The GT3 isnt Anders car, i tried to get him there but it was snowed over in sweden so he couldnt make it down.

I loved taking you to the ring Jamie, very few places that i find a real challenge and still exciting to drive, the ring is the ultimate for me.

There are actually 177 corners on the track which is 13.5 miles long. The aim in my scoob was just to have some fun as it was completely standard on brakes etc and we had a week and half of the UK/NetworkQ to drive ahead of us. I still did a 10 minute lap which isnt bad in a 115BHP scoob 4 up. We managed to pass an ex works Renault Alpine rally car too, that was funny.

Best fun on track has to be when we were going through the Karusel, that was just one big giggle every lap. :D You drove the track really well Jamie, glad you listened to me about the tightening corners, they dont half look deceptive! ;)

Bitburger kicks ass :D The Lindenhoff bar was great fun too. We arived at 7pm and left at 3am. That was a fun night, even with me burning holes in my coat with home made explosives out of matches and foil. Wish i could take you there more often, that track kicks ass and the social side is great fun. :D

P.S On joerunds web site there is a video of me doing an 8 min 10 sec lap in my westie.

Here is jamie driving my scoob on the ring. I think the grin tells you what fun it really was. :D
Arnie 01-21-2002 02:11 PM

How much is a lap nowadays? last time I went, it was about 20DM.
stiguy555 01-21-2002 07:36 PM

:( The closest I will ever be to the Ring is on Grand Prix Legends.... its sad really...

:(
Arnie 01-21-2002 10:59 PM

A European trip isn't that expensive

stiguy555 - Doing something like this does not have to be a pipe dream. It really is pretty affordable. I've seen round trip flights to Duesseldorf for under $400. If you find a small B and B or cheap hotel for a week it'll set you back maybe another $200. Or you could do the the youth hostel thing. Then there is the car rental which is also not too bad for a week. Really, for a little over a grand you could do the ring for a week. One just has to get over the mental hurdle that going to Europe is this huge expensive deal/dream. As long as you aren't jetting all over the place and planning to see all of Europe in two weeks it is very do-able. Just stick to the ring and a few blasts down the autobahn and you'll be more than satisfied. There are lots of cheap travel packages out there, just go out and do it. Of course, if you're unemployed...

One thing is that you don't need a performance car to drive on the Nürburgring. You see all kinds of stuff out there. Granted you will be passed by lots of Ferraris, Porsches, mantas, and what not. But I have seen your basic Golf, Clio, Polo or Lupo out there. It is challenging enough just getting your normal econobox to its limits out there while avoiding being run over by the big cars and bikes. I went out in my Nissan Micra and it was a blast. That little car only had 75PS but was such a blast all the same.

Save your lawn mowing money this summer and head out in the fall!

Arnie,

You have inspired us all!

Thanks for the post. You are absolutely right.

Woohoo! I'm goin' to the 'ring!

I can't believe it...

My job is taking me Dusseldorf for a tradeshow in April! i checked the map and concluded that my silly butt is gonna be driving the 'ring in a rental car! (muahahaha) :D :D :D :D :D

what should i rent? i got stuck with a diesel fiat minivan last time i went to europe. this time I'M making the rental car reservation!
Arnie 01-22-2002 09:34 PM

well what you rent depends on how much you can spend. Check oout your budget and go to Europcar or Budget/Sixt or even Avis and see what they have to offer in your price class. A fast car is nice but not necessary. Even a ford Focus is pretty good out there. If you are serious about doing the ring I can contact some of my german Impreza club members to see if any will be out there when you run. Perhaps you can arrange a ride!
