Damn Subaru paint jobs part 1

Hazdaz 04-02-2002 08:23 PM

Damn Subaru paint jobs ...

... I walked to my car to drive home from work, and saw 2 white-ish dots on the door. Thinking that they were either dirt or salt or something, I rub them off. Or atleast I was HOPING that I was gonna rub them off - they were 2 chips right on the door - right through the clear coat AND paint - you can see the bare metal.
I obvioulsy am NOT happy about that, but I am also afraid as hell to even wash teh car now - I am afraid that all the dirt spots are going to end up being chips. After all, doors USUALLY aren;t hit by that much sand/rocks. Its the front of the car that gets the most abuse - I get the fealing that my hood is going to look like swiss cheese (AND the car is not even 4 months old!).
ImprezaSTIVI 04-02-2002 08:25 PM

sorry to hear best u can do is touch it up so u dont have any rust
Hazdaz 04-02-2002 09:18 PM

oh yeah... and thats ANOTHER thing - if Subaru's are "known" to have really thin/cheap paint, then why the hell don't they supply a small touch-up bottle with the car (like most makes do)???
North Ursalia 04-02-2002 10:12 PM

Um, no Toyota, Audi, GM, Chevy, Olds, Chrysler, Peugeot, or Ford I have ever known of comes with a bottle of touch up paint... care to relate which manufacturer's "most makes" would entail ;)? I have seen some Subaru's with truly bad paint (sections popping off and such) but a stone chip is a stone chip- really deep paint chips off just as readily as thin paint ;).

My Dodge (thus Chrysler) had a bottle of touchup paint. My mothers current used Honda did. My fathers old old Ford did (back in the late 80's), as well as i THINK my mothers old old Nissan did too (once again, late 80's). If THAT doesn't cover "most makes" then not sure what would (ok, never owned a GM car - Subaru is closest - but i'll ask tommorrow if my boss's new Olds came with one).
And like I said before - the door isn't even a part of the car that USUALLY takes the 'full-force' of a rock or sand or whataver, which makes me ever MORE shocked at the 2 chips on the door ( I don't want to imagine what i'm gonna see onthe hood). Also, I have touched-up chips like this before, but alot of the time, it might chip the clear-coat, but still leave some paint behind (those are "easy" to fix - LIGHT sanding and a shot of clear-coat usualy fixes them up). Not this time ;( straight through to the metal.
kenchan 04-02-2002 10:46 PM

i wouldnt get so tied up on some chips. sooner or later everyone gets them. just keep the car clean, touch it up as needed. just a part of owning a car...
Hazdaz 04-02-2002 10:52 PM

KENCHAN: I hear ya, but it IS the first chip on the car, so obvioulsy i'm alittle upset (and it just seems like if the paint was of a better quality, it would not have gone to bare metal) - just trying to vent some anger out....
breathe in... breathe out...
DDMan 04-02-2002 11:30 PM

I got the exact same thing, but I have a BLACK car (which it REALLY stands out on). I think it was caused by someone opening their door too quick and tapping your door.

Oh well, time to go to Subaru to pick up some touch up paint!
LVSUBARU 04-03-2002 01:07 AM

I have about twenty chips on my right front and rear doors. Down to the metal!! Only on the right side though! I do alot of off roading and wanna be WRC driving!:p :D
cowgrrrl 04-03-2002 03:50 AM

Um ... maybe you guys already know about this, but when I was at the dealer today I noticed the showroom cars had something called a "clear bra." It was like a transparent sheet of sturdy polyeurethane or something that adhered to the hood where a bra would normally be.

There was a note on the car that said the bra and window tinting were new and not to touch them, so I'm guessing both were applied at the same time by the same place.
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 07:18 AM

COWGRRL: Well just to add insult to injury on my car, I already bought that clear bra stuff, but have not had the chance to put it on yet - ofcourse even if I had, it only protects the lower hood.
Samirr76 04-03-2002 09:11 AM

Most cars do NOT come with a bottle of touch-up paint. Are you on crack? In my family we have had two Nissans, two Fords, one Mercedes, two Subarus, and one Pontiac (a 1973 Lemans with a 350 V8, not one of the new, ribbed-for-nobody's-pleasure Pontiacs). NONE came with touch up paint. Maybe some dealers throw in a bottle to be nice. And Captain Morgan there is right, thicker paint doesnt prevent chips. :o
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 10:55 AM

SAMIRR76: Well either I'm on crack, or the dealers you've bought your cars from are. Like I said before, Most of the cars that I or my family has bought in the last +/-20 years have had a nice little bottle of touch-up paint (and thats from 3, possibly 4, brands). Unless the 'tooth-fairy' has a day job in the automotive industry, SOMEONE must have put it in the glovebox, cuz we didn't buy them.
And more importantly, we have RARELY really needed to use them (let alone after 4 short months). The hood on a car is an understandable place where chips can occur - fine. Thats why I bought that clear bra thing. But even on my old 7 year old car, I NEVER had a clip appear on the door (and that car was dark green - a color that would show the bare metal below it VERY clearly). And even though its 7 yaers old, it still has a very nice shiny paint job - I hope my WRX is as nice in 7 years.
If it was a 'freak-accident' then FINE, HOPEFULLY it doesn't happen again, but I have heard enough other people complain about Subaru's poor paint that I just had to vent. Or are THEY on crack too, and all these complaints are totally unwarranted??

DDMAN: Dude, sorry to hear about your black car's chips there. Thats probably one of the reasons why I would never own a black car.
Samirr76 04-03-2002 11:12 AM

yup!

Yup! You're on crack :D
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 12:33 PM

Well, I got my crack and my touch-up paint from our old cars.
Mmmm crack....
ezatnova 04-03-2002 12:58 PM

I don't care whether the car "comes with" touch-up or not... it's not that hard to deal with.
"Ok, here's the $25,000 for my car. Now, give me a bottle of touchup paint free please."
The salesman is going to lose some major points if he doesn't hustle to the back and grab you a bottle.

Bad expierence with Paint Job

Case 1
I left my car in long term parking at the airport completly clean just after I bought it about 2 weeks ago. When I had gotten back I found a bird had done it's business on the top of my car and well I figured it wasn't a big deal. I went to the carwash and washed away the derbris only to wash away the whole paint job underneath! TO THE METAL! I was very very unhappy about this and took into Subaru and they said it must have been a battery leak from a car that was above yours in delivery. That wasn't the case but that's what they had convinced themselves in order to do something about it. They repainted the whole top of my car as a result. I have several chips and lots of door dings, because people just aren't curtious anymore!

Case2
I just found a rust spot within one of my Chips just above my wheel wells. I haven't taken this one up with Subaru yet but you can guarantee it will be. I will let you know what happens with that.

Has anyone else had any extreme conditions with thier paint jobs like these?
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 01:09 PM

EZATNOVA - totaly agree, just never even thought about it at the time (cuz I thought ALL cars came with them already).
Anyways, i've calmed down from the day before when I first saw those chips :(
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 01:12 PM

GETYUP: Holy (bird) crap! Damn, dude, thats the first I have ever heard of that. So does it look good now that its re-painted?
GETYUP 04-03-2002 01:14 PM

Bird Crap

Yeah the top looks brand new from the factory, they did an Excellent job. I'm not sure if I got a clear coat in the first place. I may have gotten a lemon of a paint job.
kenchan 04-03-2002 01:14 PM

hazdaz- yah, i hear ya. :(
GeoT100 04-03-2002 04:51 PM

some bird dropped a few on my roof on the way to work, then at the end of the day i took it home to wash it and it had already ate the clearcoat , i was pissed, then two days later some kids thought it would be funny to egg every car in my neigborhood and i was one of the unlucky.....three eggs hit my driver side door and where every egg hit had completely chipped the paint, the damage of each of the three eggs where identacle, my dads toyota truck, and my mothers camery were egged too, not a scratch.......that just goes to show what a crappy paint the subaru factory has.

damn kids .........
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 05:54 PM

After hearing GEOT100's story, I wonder why people still have kids? Same thing happened to me like 7(?) years ago with my old car. It was Halloween - was driving to the gym and BANG some f****en kid threw an egg at the door. And didn;t just THROW it, he must have WAILED it at the door (was sooo freakin loud) - I had no idea what had happened at the time - I thought someone had shot at the car. On that car, the clear-coat chipped, but the paint below it was intact - I get the funny suspision that if it happened in THIS car, I'd be lookin at bare metal (just like GEOT100's).
Damn kids.
CTKAG 04-03-2002 09:00 PM

I received a bottle of touch-up paint with my '99 Ford Ranger - although it came as part of a dealer appreciation kit about a month after the purchase. Kept hoping Subaru would do the same.

Hazdaz- what clear kit did you get? You just got the lower hood? You're going to put it on yourself? I only have 2,800 miles on my car and will probably have to get the nose re-painted later this Spring(damn sand in the HOV lanes!) and am seriously considering one of those kits afterwards. Let me know how your install goes. I've heard the lower bumper is a bear - may consider having it done.
Hazdaz 04-03-2002 09:19 PM

CTKAG: The clear bra I got is only the lower hood and mirrors and a small section of the front of the quarter panels (right next to the headlights). Its one of the 3M ones (damn, that company makes so many cool things). I actually bought it almost a month ago, but have had NO time to even atempt to put it on - I think I am also slightly hesitant to try putting it on.
When I went to go pick it up, the guy was actually putting one on another silver WRX (just like mine), the guy that owned it had attempted to put it on himself earlier that morning. It totaly didn;t work for him and he went to the shop and had to buy a whole new one and pay the shop 2 install it for him. He defintly didn;t seem like a happy camper (I don't think he's on the I-Club). The shop guy was bascially laughin at me at even attempting to put it on and really warning me on installing it and that its tough as hell.
I would LOVE to prove him wrong, but the only way i'll find out is if this weekend has nice wweather so I have like a full day to mess around with it if need be.
Wish me luck - i KNOW i'll need it. I guess I should also do a search on that clear stuff to see if I can read some hints on how to apply it.

This is too funny -- as I was preparing to drive my new 98 Impreza off the dealer lot today, my salesman handed me a free container of touch-up paint. I hadn't asked for one or even commented on the couple of small chips and scratches on the car. He just said, "Here, you'll probably want this at some point."

I thought it was interesting in light of the conversation in this thread. So, maybe it varies from dealer to dealer. Having spent time in California and Florida, I can definitely say Montana businesses tend to have much friendlier and more generous customer service. Maybe it's not a Subaru corporate policy but an individual dealer decision. Or even just a thoughtful salesman ...?
Frederf 04-04-2002 12:56 AM

It's not a good sign when a dealer hands you touchup paint and says "You're gonna need this."

For us they should hand us a bucket of 'touch up' paint.

how many people would buy a 'paint chip' warranty? Get a chip, bring it in, and they professionally touch it up and buff it out. sounds like amoney maker to me!
Tex-WReX2 04-04-2002 09:52 AM

Another one here. Don't get me wrong, I love my WRX, but the paint is really poor. I just used the Mothers clay bar system, and being so close to the car, I could really see some other poor qualities. Orange spots under the clear on the bumper, too many chips to count(yes, I know, it happens, but all of mine are down to the metal), strange spots under the clear, and a few drip marks as well. Oh well, what can you do? I just keep it clean, carry around a bottle of water and some quik detailer spray for those bird terds you find.
cowgrrrl 04-04-2002 09:53 AM

I don't know, I figure paint chips are just a fact of life. Especially in Montana, where the roads are sanded -- more like graveled -- six months out of the year. And lots of roads are still unpaved. My Accord had dozens of little ones on the hood. The new Impreza has several little ones on the hood -- it's no biggie to me.

But having heard the horror stories in here about chips and bird poop, it does sound like maybe Subaru's paint is not as good as it could be. I plan to be extra vigilant!

BTW, ChosenWon, I think a chip warranty is a great idea.
