Cost of new 2002 rear bumper (painted)

Could some one possibly tell me what the cost would be of a freshly painted (new) 2002 rear bumper? A tailgator tapped my rear bumper today and the owner's father asked if I could get an estimate and give it to him before reporting it to the insurance company.
How much does a painted MBP bumper cost to replace?
Thank you.

You cant buy a bumper pre-painted. The bumper will cost the same at just about any Subaru dealer and the cost to paint it will vary considerably from body shop to the next.

That's fine. I figured the part would not arrive painted. Local Subaru dealer said $188.95 + tax for the rear bumper. And I'm guessing about $200-$250 to get the part repainted. I'm wondering if I should just call it into the insurance company and let them handle this. Afterall, I was rear-ended straight on. Hmmm.. what to do...what to do.

$350 for a repainted bumper > $50 a month more in insurance for the next X years IMO.

The injury is so very minor. However, it means a new bumper. And the nice thing is that I had 2 fairly large scrapes on the rear bumper from when I purchaed the car (from fellow NASIOC member). Those will no longer be there. Awesome.

blending the paint to match MBP might prove to be a PITA= more money

I'm guessing they (body shop) pull the paint code from the door jam and have it matched.

/\ still, a 2002 black, pearl paint car is gonna require blending, more than likely.
It will depend on the body shop and painter and quality of canned paint and paint on the car already.

Okay, so what would you recommend I do? What shall I ask the body shop(s)?

The body shop will have to color match your current paint because of fading. They can't just pull the paint code from your door jam and paint it the same color unfortunately.

Pretty much any bumper replacement I've seen that requires a paint job and blending is going to run at LEAST $400, more like $600 from a good shop. GOOD being the operative word there.
Good means that they can match the color accurately. Good means that they lay down both the base and clear coat with minimal orange peel. Good means that IF they blend it into the body that they don't leave tape seams and overspray... If you have their insurance do it, find a body shop that works on show cars and classics IF you want the best possible job. It'll cost more, but you're not paying for it, right? :)

The kids father has until next Friday (Oct. 7) to get me a check for $650. If it's not in my hand by end of day Friday, I'm calling my insurance company and the guy can kiss his insurance rates good-bye.
The damage is ever so minor. And thankfully it's JUST the plastic bumper (nothing else -- not even the styrofoam behind the license plate is damage) will be painted and installed.
I hate tailgators.

Yes - If you are certain $650 will cover it, then have them cut you a check now - otherwise, I'd call the insurance company. If daddy is asking if he can pay rather than the insurance company, then daddy should cough up the cash now. I would advise against waiting on this.

Damn sound like you bumper can easily be fixs for like 179 bucks threw me.
Ive painted my front lip and side skirts with out blending and it looks perfect.
I would get a 04/05 rear bump and tails with that money but anyways good luck and hope everything turns out good.

$584 and $585 are the two estimates. I called the father thursday evening and he wanted to simply have the car fixed and he'd "pick up the bill". I said "no way." He didn't seem anxious to cooperate either. He has until Friday to put a $650 cashier's check/money order in my hand. I'm half tempted to throw in the towel and let the two insurance companies battle it out. Because frankly, I don't trust anybody.

Really, from his end it makes sense to get insurance involved... Just as a CYA type thing. Unless there's some sort of written agreement, you could still get insurance involved AFTER he gives you the check - especially if it's cash or a money order.
I'm not saying you would and definitely not saying you SHOULD, but I've seen just how f'd up people can be in these really minor situations. Seems like the worst side of people always comes out. I know if I were in his shoes I'd just take the hit and let insurance work it out. Make the kid pay for it.

how bad did he hit you? i got rear-ended 2 days ago, i didnt file a police report because i knew him, i got 2 quotes so far around $600 for a new bumper painted, however his dad wants me to get a quote from "his shop" so we can come to a reasonable amount, there is no way in hell im getting it done at "his shop" i dont care how good it is.
anyways, the point im trying to make here is, after i got his, my exhaust became louder and is making popping noises, ($350 for a new exhaust from dealer), and also i realized my rear springs have been squeeking after he hit me (questionable amount), im getting my car checked on tuesday, their might be even more damage.
my point is, dont just take the check for $650, because their could be more damage, go to a dealership and get your car inspected.
these things are such nightmares, i really wanna just call their insurance, but i feel bad for screwing him over, if they get stingy on me, im just gonna call their insurance, he rear-ended me, easy win.

Honestly, we weren't going over 10-12mph. It was very low impact. So low that the only damages are directly related to the plastic bumper. There is no uneven gapping where the bumper meets the trunk or rear quarter panels. Hell, even the cheap styrofoam behind the rear license plate frame isn't cracked. The bumper just looks like it was parked in NYC for the evening and driver's had their way moving in and out of the spot behind me.

That's cool. I'm keeping it original. I honestly can't see myself in this Subaru for more then a year to year and a half. :)

I just did this to my '02. New bumper, new foam insert, paint (White), Statefarm wrote it up at $667. See if the at-fault will cut you a check for this amount, if not go insurance.
