How do I clean 300 miles of Maine Forest crotch stank out of my Sparco driving suit? part 1

How do I clean 300 miles of Maine Forest crotch stank out of my Sparco driving suit?
The Engrish in my Sparco driving suit manual is far from intelligible and I'm a little rusty on my Italian...how do I clean my Sparco Sprint driving suit? While Googling I've seen everything from "don't get it wet" to "dry clean only" to "hand wash cold with Woolite" to "toss it in the washing machine". Since I'm sure as heck not going to dry clean after every event and common sense tells me not to machine wash I was thinking of trying the hand wash cold with Woolite.

Suggestions?

I just throw it in the washing machine after hot or muddy rallies.

do what the label says. its in like universal symbols so youll have to search online to decipher them

just dont wash it too often or the fireproofing degrades.

Mines not a Sparco. But I wash it periodically (every 3 events or so) on gentle in cold water in the washing machine. Some of the dirt never comes completely out of the black suit but it looks and smells better

Washing a Sparco
I have a Sparco Xlite suit which I got from Demon-Tweeks. I asked them when I bought it how they clean the suits in the store and was told that we just throw them in a washing machine on gentle cycle with cold water and some mild detergent. That's what my wife has been doing and it works fine. Other's get their suits dry cleaned each time but I don't think it is necessary unless I get some grease or other stains on it.

Aha...sweet...the instructions on the Sparco site aren't broken conflicting Engrish. And duh...Resources was the only icon I didn't click on last night before I posted. ;) Regarding the care icons on the suit itself, the only icon on mine is an iron.

Thanks all!

So I buy an ALPINE STARS suit and then what? Rub it on my Sparco Sprint to transfer all the dirt and grime from the Sparco to the ALPINE? I suppose that would work, but it's a little expensive...

Well, it's obvious to me that you're supposed to iron off the dirt.

I always just threw mine in the washer. Warm water, since cold doesn't get much out. Normal detergent, since Woolite is pretty worthless.

And I put it in the dryer, too. It is fireproof, so I figured it could stand 40 min of warm air.
just dont wash it too often or the fireproofing degrades
I thought that was just for Proban (which is treated cotton). With Nomex the fibers themselves are fireproof, so there's nothing to wash out.
Protege Menace 08-17-2005 01:55 PM

hmm, i think i asked rally peeps a while ago so maybe you dont have to worry.

but the tags say to air dry or use cold air I think, we jsut hang it outside to dry.

also, be careful washing your shoes, mine are the blue sparcos and they bleached SWO bad, the water coming off them was pure purple

Dry cleaning got the funk out of my OMP. Mine was in really really rough shape. It looks so nice now.

rallynutdon 08-18-2005 01:59 PM

Dry cleaning has never made mine look or feel any better than washing. I'll still periodically have it dry cleaned though.
bjorn240 08-18-2005 10:25 PM

My Sparco Top 5, I washed and dried 100% of the time.
My Alpinestars GP Pro LM, I dry clean 100% of the time.

The Sparco wore somewhat faster, and pilled a bit more. Difference in suit or washing method, I really have no idea.

I have nothing constructive to add other than I think it is great that the inventor of the trunk monkey has now brought us "Maine forest crotch stank"

I machine wash all my suits. From what I've found, red fades pretty quickly. My blue Subaru suit still looks brand new.

Important point, I use Shout spray on all the "stanky" parts. I spray on the inside as well as outside of the pits and anything that got dirty. Let it sit for about half an hour then wash cold, zipped up, velcro'd and by itself or with my balaclava.

I don't know if my suit has crotch stank. I've never smelled the crotch of my suit. I think it's due to upbringing...

Oh, believe me, I didn't smell the crotch of my suit. Let's just say that the whole car smelled like mangina after Maine Forest and, well, there was only one thing separating the seats from our crotch stank.

You could always try some feminine hygiene products ;)

See, I don't rally because I'd crap myself. Then have to come onto the forums and ask how to get THAT stink out of my suit. And my seat. And harnesses...

I have an odd disorder called NVID (Nonlinear Velocity Induced Dendrophobia).

I'd sit silly seat in a rally car all day long, but you couldn't pay me to go wheel to wheel with you psychos through the corkscrew at Laguna. :D

I don't know. Going wheel to wheel through a turn with several other cars is nerve wracking but at least they are also metal and moving and then there is runoff and then tires. If I were riding right seat in a rally car with trees wizzing by I think that I would be in the same boat as Gary. Driving would be another story.

A phobic phobia... Isn't that a little redundant? Kinda like having the fear of fear. :p I'd be scared to race door to door. I'd rather be flying solo with a good friend in the car telling me where to go instead of having soomeone kamikaze down the inside. But that may be due to countless friday night runs up dirt roads to the cottage.
Zephyr 08-19-2005 03:32 PM

Right but everyone out there is aware of what the other drivers are doing. Most of the guys who are doing club racing do not want to wad up their equipment. It really sucks to break stuff which I'm sure you rally guys know. I guess it's a little easier to handle if the damage is self inflicted.

GarySheehan 08-19-2005 04:57 PM

Right, at least in road racing everyone is usually going in the same direction and trying to get to the same place at the same time, so it's somewhat predictable.

Trees don't give a crap and will step right out in front of your car without a moment of hesitation.

getting back on topic, anyone know if heat from washing or drying has an effect on the effectivness of the suit? The actually material of the suit is designed to react to extreme heat/flame and basically self destruct via charring and flaking, would prolonged exposure to the heat of water or drying change the Sfi rating? Just curious.
GarySheehan 08-19-2005 05:16 PM

Oh, sure. A guy with "tree" in his name is trying to "get the thread back on topic." You're not fooling anyone!

I never put my suit in the dryer. I hang it to drip dry.
