Auto Dimming Mirrors part 1

Auto Dimming Mirrors
I read from this website regarding the Auto Dimming Mirros (not the Subaru OEM) but when i tried searching for it, i can't seems to get anything.

I am wondering if there are any other auto dimming mirror that is better than the OEM dimming mirror and of course compatible with the 2004 STi

There are two main manufacturers - Gentex and Donnelly - the Gentex has a display in part of the mirror (upper righthand corner) for things like a compass or outside temp, while the Donnelly puts it on the bottom, below the mirror itself. Both are rebadged by a number of other companies (e.g., Cipa for Donnelly). The OEM mirror is a Donnelly. Any mirror which has a camlock style windshield mount will work on the Impreza - any other style mount, and you need to remove and replace the button on the windshield for it to work. They all use the same wiring scheme (switched power, ground, and an optional reverse inhibit), so they are all compatable with pretty much anything.

Why not go with the OEM? I have one in the WRX. It has made night driving less of a headache with all the Ford F150's around here
chaddeus 03-17-2004 10:22 AM

Yeah.. I just got the OEM mirrors from www.subaruwrxparts.com

Too bad they don't make the side mirros like that. Or some kind of blue tinting- that's where the redneck truck lights always get me.

Is www.subaruwrxparts.com the cheapest place to get the OEM auto dimming mirror from? I am looking to get one as well...Thanks in advance.

Get Zoom wide-angle replacement mirrors, they are cheap and tinted blue for reduced glare.

I got the ones that a vendor was selling on here a couple years back for the WRX. You just stick it onto your side mirrors with heavy duty double-sided tape. It has a nice blue tint to them like you see on the luxury cars and it's wide-angled so you can see your blind spots too. One of my favorite mods so far!!! :)

Here's a thread that may shed some more light on the subject:

I did not really search but i compare it with www.subaruparts.com and www.subaruwrxparts.com and wrxparts.com seems to be cheaper

The Gentex mirror has a teal display while the OEM or Donnelly mirror has a green display. The Gentex needs an adapter as Subaru uses a cam lock system for mirrors and gentex is not.
They are also different internally. The Gentex uses a liquid material to dim while the Donnelly uses a solid film.

What do you guys think of the Auto-dimming/compass mirror with the Homelink system built in? I am looking to get this to rid my car of the annoying garage door opener on my visor...has anyone tried this? All input is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance.

Here is what it is...

Homelink is definitely cool - I am not a big fan of the Gentex mirrors, though - don't like loosing a portion of the mirror to the compass/temperature display. If you really want homelink, you can always pick up a transmitter on eBay for $30 or so, then wire as many channels as you need to a switch - that's what I did (one channel for the gate to the neighborhood, and one to the garage door)

I am installing a Gentex today. I will come back later today or tomorrow and give feed back on this issue.

The reason I am getting the homelink one is because my stock autodimming mirror was broken by someone, and they are replacing it...so I figured why not get the Homelink one since it is being paid mostly by that person. Do you have pictures of your homelink setup? What pieces do you buy? Would you recommend just having the person replace the stock mirror, and then just install the homelink somewhere else? I was thinking that if I just get it inside the mirror...I don't have to modify anything...and it will look factory. Thanks for your input...Let me know what you think...

Awesome, which one are you getting? Please post pics once you have it installed, and also let me know what you think of it...thanks in advance!

I'm looking for a new mirror because mine rattles so much when my subs hit!
Anyone know if any of the listed mirrors are better with rattling?

Thanks,
Mike

I installed the Gentex auto dimming mirror today. The display
(direction and temp) is translucent and not opaque so you can see right through it. When looking through the mirror it is not even noticeable and does not block the view. To see
the direction and temp you have to focus your eyes on the square. I also wanted to mention that although the display is Teal it still has a green status light..I havent tested the autodimming capability yet.

Here are a couple other options for you as well if you feel like a DIY project...

I bought a homelink transmitter (on eBay) from a late model Lexus and a spdt switch from Digikey (momentary-on - off - momentary-on). I wired the switch to two of the channels on the transmitter (one for a gate, and one for the garage) then grabbed power from the cigarette lighter. I ran the leads under the center console, put the transmitter on the backside of the cupholder and put the switch in the dccd blank.

there is a pic of the switch mounting in this thread
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=442695&highlight=digikey

I didn't take pictures of where I put the transmitter before buttoning everything up - I did more or less the same thing as the description on scoobymods.

What you do really is up to you - the easiest thing is to buy the all-inclusive mirror (assuming the display square doesn't bug you) - hopefully the buttons are sensitive, so the mirror doesn't move when you press them.

AFAIK - the vendor that was selling them left the board a while ago. I got fortunate and bought them off someone that never used his...

I'm not a big fan of the OEM auto-dimming mirror. I'm on my third one and its dying too....

When I first get them they darken so dark all I can see is headlights in the rearview. Then over the course of a couple months they lighten up to the point that I can see everything behind me at night and headlights are blinding.

Subaru checked the wiring to make sure it wasnt something causing the mirrors to die. Then I checked it, and it did appear to be fine, voltage wise. This mirror I'm going to take apart and see if its the eye or the film or what...

Wow, this thread got dug up from the past...no worries though.

All of my cars have auto-dimming mirrors and I have yet to have problems with them. Surprised to hear that you, CynicX, have had three now fail.

I bought a Donnelly with auto-dimming, compass and temp in 04 for my WRX since Subaru did not sell that version with the outside temp. Used it with no problems, sold the car and removed the mirror and installed it in my F250. Still working great.

My 07 STI came with an auto-dimming (most likely Donnelly because it was cam-lock) and I purchased the Home-Link version (non-cam-lock). My wife also has one on her car but I am not sure of the maker.

So far no problems. The Home-Link version is nice to not have multiple transmitters on my visors.
AardvarkWRX 12-16-2007 04:06 PM

I wasn't sure if i would like the auto-dimming mirror, but it was already installed in the 08 WRX that I purchased. After having driven the car with the auto-dimming mirror for 6 weeks, I feel that the concept of the auto-dimmer is good, but the technology is too young to be as versatile as the good old fashioned flip-mirror.

My main issue with the mirror is how quickly is rebounds from dark to light. This has been a problem for me driving in the city because the mirror returns to full-light after driving a few blocks but then a truck gets behind me and the mirrors take a while to go back to dim.

I want to hack this mirror. My idea is to add a button that would put the mirror in full-dim mode so that I could drive through the city without getting surprise-blinded.

Before I start this, can anyone tell me if the '08 subaru oem mirrors are the same as the ones from previous years? Is there any information that can be shared? I would need to know where the light sensor is, if the mirror assembly could be disassembled without being destructive, if anyone has already done this?
Hank3 12-17-2007 10:33 AM

I believe Subaru contracts with Gentex these days for their auto-dim mirrors. IIRC, there should be sensor in the vicinity of where the buttons are on the bottom row?
pityr 12-17-2007 10:49 AM

Im going to be selling my auto dimming mirror here shortly since I upgraded to the homelink model. If anyone wants it PM me. I have the wire, trim and mirror.
