So what kind of racing is this? I am too lazy to look it up, and was too ignorant to pay attention last time this series was brought up. :p
| jcroy66 | 06-07-2005 10:39 PM |
So since entry fee is $100, you have to place first to break even? :(
And any nationally-competitive STX car wouldn't be remotely competitive in this series. Joy.
Josh, http://www.precisionracing.org/. 3-part event - autocross, 100 yard drag race, and a skidpad.

I will be there this weekend in the AMS car.. we will see how it does with autocross settings and such on it. The prixes look like we can at least pay for lunch or something :)
Do we know when this is going to air on Spike TV?

So, my A Stock legal S2000 collects 690 preparation points and has to run in Modified Sport 1?
This is doomed.

Eh $100 I may get the car aligned and run this weekend.
Jon too bad my new SM car isn't done so I could spank you guys. :D I'm assuming you are going to be in the open touring class or whatever it is.

Three events. Autocross course, skidpad, and a 100 yard drag strip. Autocross is 50% of the score. Even if I don't enter I'll probably stop by on Saturday to check it out. They are running two seperate days up here, Saturday and Sunday. Not many local autocrossers are doing it due to the steep price, $99
Looking over the rules again it would be awfully hard to keep the WRX out of Modified Touring 2, which allows like 1500 points of modifications. Most prepped STX cars would be around 800 points or so.
Actually I take that back, a STX car would be very close to the Grand Touring 3 allowances. You'd have to take some stuff off probably to make it 100% legal.

Yeah, my Camaros are GT2 legal. I plan on running the event in DC.

Hmmm...
Mazda RX8 with Konis, R-Compounds, exhaust. GT1.
Against...
Mitsubishi Evolution VIII and RS
Subaru WRX STi
Those two cars can run R-Compounds, manual boost control and Fuel Cut defenser... and still stay in GT1.
I think I'm sitting this one out.

I know when the car is underclassed against its competition.
If I was new, I'd say... YEAH! Bring it ON!

Yeah, based on the wacky classing, high entry fee, small number of runs, and low contingency money, we may not do any events at all. If we do, it'll probably only be the Cleveland one (which is actually about 4 miles from our house). If we do that, I think we'll ask around, see about borrowing some slicks & a boost controller for the day.
As for the National Championship, February?? Oh geez, I'm trying to count the number of things I'd need to switch TWICE in order to compete (once from the winter setup to the race setup, then again, from the race setup back to the winter setup!) Suspension, seats, battery, alignment, of course the tires (but those'd get switched regardless). I'm pretty positive I'm missing some other stuff too.

I signed up to run the event on Saturday here, since my car is currently eligible for GT3, just barely. Points make the car combinations interesting. I have basically a STX car at this point but it's on STI takeoff struts/springs. You could also compete in the same class in a WRX with coilovers and R-compound tires, but then that's all you could really do, the rest would have to be stock.
| Jsortor | 06-08-2005 10:01 AM |
I think the WRX in GT2 with fat race tires, then suspension mods up to the points limit would be a good car. It is unfortunate that we can't just jump between two different organizations, but I am not at all suprised.
KC, your car's point value goes to show you how "Stock" SCCA's stock classes really are eh?.

KC....I'm just razin ya a bit, thats all.... :)
I dont have the National level experience some of you have, so I am registered for the Atlanta event simply for the fun of it and the experience at a sort of different event.
I'm looking more at the "fun" aspect and hope to have a good time....

I don't get what you're saying.
If the EVO or STi weren't able to up boost, then I really wouldn't have much an issue with it and would give it my best go.. knowing that I'd get trounced in the 100 yd dash.
But since they (EVO/STi) can up boost safely (with the FCD) and still be on r-compounds... (ie: SM car against a BS car) That dosn't say anything bad about SCCA classing.

Here is my questions about the wheel points system:
After market and dealer option wheels may be run with the following guidelines:
50 Per inch of width over factory width or 7 inches, whichever is greater
So with my 17x8 aftermarket rotas I would have to add 50 pts because even though factory is 17x8, they are still one inch over 7?

Well, how about the fact that I don't have to add points for having double-adjustable Konis on my green 1LE Camaro (because they are stock!), but putting off-the-shelf single adjustables on my black non-1LE Camaro adds 250points?
There are certainly some issues with the points system.

I think it means "factory width or 7 inches, whichever is greater". So since factory is 8 inches, you wouldn't be penalized. I think.

I just looked at how classing works. You have a good point.

Springs
15 Lowering the car below factory specifications by factory adjustable parts
15 Utilizing factory springs with non-factory spring perches, perch location, spacing blocks or hangers
50 Aftermarket sport springs that are not adjustable for ride height
100 Aftermarket springs with adjustable spring perches (i.e. coil-overs)
Shocks
5 Reduction modifications or removal of bump stops
100 Nonstandard shocks with up to point of adjustment
200 Nonstandard shocks with two points of adjustment
300 Shocks with remote reservoirs and/or unlimited points of adjustment
Bushings
So.. a standard set of single-adjustable full coilovers (JIC's, Teins, etc) is.. 200? 100 for the springs and 100 for the single adjustable shocks?
edit +40 for camber plates

Like jcroy said...you take the greater of "factory width" and 7". 8>7, so you compare against 8".
I wish they had more leeway in wheel width (25 pts. for 1/2 inch), because I have to take the whole 50 points for my 7.5" wheels.

Would be nice if it did. Since this does not get to Florida until January I have plenty of time to figure it out. Since my car is A-stock prepped I am not planning on changing it for this I just wanted to see what quick things I could do for the class.

Yeah 240 points for a standard coilover with camber plates.
I'm using 16x7 wheels so I have no penalty for that.
The exhaust rule is what might get some people. If you have a catless uppipe it automatically gets you 75 points in the WRX. It's then 15 points for a catback, 20 points for a header. So if you have all three you get bumped into the Modified class for being over 100 points. However if you have the stock header it allows you to run a catless turbo-back exhaust on the car. 75+15 for the catback.

My only question on the header is the FI rules have:
150 Nonstandard exhaust manifold
what does this apply to? Do you get dinged twice for a header on a turbo car?

I think nonstandard means turbo versus NA. IE: aftermarket Honda turbo header. I think there is also another big hit for "putting a turbo on an otherwise NA car". So who knows.

I cant wait to go run this in Chicago.... I think I am running like 240 points... bumped me up a class, but whatever. Im just going for fun! Hope to see some of you there.... we need NASIOC flags or something to identify each other :)

yeah, after looking more, I'm thinking maybe they're talking about a header that is plumbed for an external wastegate.
Either way...I'm not adding 150 points for my Borla header. :)

I just went through the points whith the condition the car will be in this weekend, and the best that I can tell it is in Open Touring. (whatever that is)
The car is in different trim than it was on One Lap, the 2.3 liter engine is out of the car, and the 2 liter is back in with the 3071 turbo.. (spool faster) We should be putting "about" 425 to the ground as it is. We took the big brakes off and have the 17 inch stock sized wheels on it with R compounds which we didn't have at One Lap of course. There is an autocross specific alignment on it, and race seats back in it. I just hope its sorted enough to be competitive. the lack of developed suspension could hurt us here more than I would like.
Rankins was talking about bringing the DSP car up, and I would almost take that kind of handling over the HP.
I see now where it will be on TV.. Spike July 2,3rd 12am Eastern.
