Finished center gauge pod - OEM Look part 1

Finished center gauge pod - OEM Look
I didn't really like the Defi or ATI center pods (not a fan of the Sydney Opera house look), and the Autometer one never looks quite right, even on the "good" installs.

So, I went with the OEM center piece, $63 online. It comes with just a mounting dish and the cover. I fabbed an internal mounting plate out of sheet metal, with 3 52mm holes, and painted it black. I also added an acrylic front to it, with some nice hex bolts to secure it. There is very little glare on the windshield (lets say, 1/5 of the gauge face shows) since they are recessed. Since its OEM, it matches the dash color and texture perfectly.

I think it turned out pretty good:

In addition, it doesn't rattle at all, and I can access the gauges very easily should I need to mess with anything.

well done...that's the route i plan to go.

I wish the defi single din unit cost less - same idea as what you made, except it's a pre-packaged assembly.

wow, thats exactly what i want, what size are the gauges? and how much was everything?

They are 52mm Defi-D Black. The gauges aren't made anymore, but, egauges has some left. I have them mounted without the plastic black bezel.

It's not cheap, and, to be perfectly honest, I wish they had a peak warning. Now that they're easy to get to, maybe I'll try to wire in a peak warning light.

Defi-D gauges are ~$200 each www.egauges.com

Pod - $63 https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=662

Figure $20 for sheet metal, fasteners, paint, acrylic sheet. I'd also recommend a rivet gun, makes it easy to assemble.

I'm not following you...

First off, did you mean "if you can't say something nice?"

Assuming the first is true, are you implying that you want to express how crappy you think this is, or, are you saying to others that you shouldn't post unless you've got something nice to say?

drfrink24 03-18-2006 07:53 PM

Man, and I thought my crappy 1.3 MP camera took bad pictures in the day... This was the best out of 12 shots:

Wow,
I have to spell it out. "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything." It's just not my cup of tea. It's not bad, I'm just not crazy about it. To each his own. I'm especially not crazy about the acrylic plate. But I seem to be in the minority, so enjoy!

I would say its more of a "wow" factor on our part, that someone actually expected such a turd of a post to be understandable.

Regardless, I am literally torn up inside that you don't like it. I may not get out of bed today, as I don't have the energy to face a world where someone doesn't like my modified center console...
oldmansan 03-19-2006 01:09 PM

I'm so torn up you're torn up I think I'll stay inside too. It's your car and there are plenty of positive posts, so like I said, enjoy.

can we get a daytime shot from a little farther back so we can see more of the dash? BTW looks really good!
ChrisL2 03-19-2006 08:02 PM

Looks ok. Maybe paint the bezels flat black or something? The silver bezels make it look odd for some reason.

I was going to do something like this originally, without the acrylic shield, but I couldn't get over the oddness. I love the lock of the pod though. Too bad the Defi 3-gauge DIN doesn't work with the Defi-Link, otherwise I'd probably buy it.

To be honest, I think the bezels match the instrument cluster bezels, and the shifter trim.

The problem with the defi-din, is that they don't have EGT.

I'll get more pictures tomorrow in the daylight.
okaythen01 04-28-2006 03:07 AM

ok I bought the center gauge pod but it's not painted...it's like grayish color kinda like clay thingy....should I get it painted professionaly or just get a paint spray and spray it? but will the sun discolor it or whatever future problems
ChrisL2 04-28-2006 01:11 PM

The OEM one does not need to be painted. The texture/color matches the stock dash. Are you positive you have the right one?

My matched my 05 with no problem.
okaythen01 04-28-2006 08:35 PM

actually I don't have the OEM one I have the one that fits older wrx ok and I am using it for 06 wrx
