How to reduce weight while keeping the seats/carpets? part 1

How to reduce weight while keeping the seats/carpets?
Does anyone have any idea what I can remove (besides my own body fat) from the car without having to remove the carpet and the rear seat to reduce weight?
Subie Gal 01-10-2005 08:11 PM

what are you planning on doing with the car?
how serious are you about this?? :)

you can swap wheels, control arms, suspension bits to lighter pieces
front seats weigh a ton (rear seat doesnt weigh much at all)
you can remove spare tire, spare tire jack

there's loads to do...
but most of the things you can do are not asthetically pleasing ;)

just trying to unload some weight from the car. i have gotten lighter wheels, waiting on the control arms, going with STi laterals. i like to keep the side airbags of the front seats - there must be a way to reduce the front seat's weight, right?

spare tire and jack are coming off soon...

but i would just like to know what i can do to keep the car looking...not stripped.

jdm bumper beams, remove ac and cruise control
mcowger 01-10-2005 10:26 PM

2 letters:

CF

Hehehehe.
Uncle Scotty 01-10-2005 10:38 PM

Light battery.....header/exhaust....loose the front U brace....light bumperbeams...light pulleys....intake...coilovers instead of struts/springs....no AC....no cruise....
cboggess 01-10-2005 10:47 PM

glovebox door, dash panels, door panels, trunk liner, hood liner, underbody trays, dump pipe straight out of turbo, roof liner, pillar covers, radio, speakers, speaker wiring, lightweight pistons, crank, rods, wrist pins, CF prop shaft, 2 pc. rotors with aluminum hats.
powerslide23 01-10-2005 10:52 PM

In addition to all above: A/C compressor, radio and speakers, only fill the gas tank with 5 gals (less than half a tank); any junk in the car you don't need.

i was gonna remove the ac compressor in my 97 impreza but it looks like thats whats supporting the ac compressor. am i wrong here?
linsavy 01-11-2005 03:11 PM

the a/c compressor supporting the a/c compressor? Huh?
ycatsce 01-11-2005 10:29 PM

:)
lol. i was trying to figure that one out myself. :)
t3hWIT 01-12-2005 03:13 PM

lol sorry. i was doing 10 things at once. :-/

the ac compressor appears to be supporting the ALTERNATOR(!!!!!!) on my car.

duh. im stupid.

Not to pull the search Nazi crap on you, but there's a lengthy thread (worth reading the entire thing) about this here.

P.S. I searched the key words "weight reduction weight down."

get aluminum suspension. suspension is really heavy so that would make a big diff too.

guess they didnt :-P
t3hWIT 01-15-2005 11:13 PM

ok. i looked into it. the alternator and the ac compressor are conneted to a metal plate. to get the compressor, there are five bolts on the compressor you have to loosen, 4 you get to from the battery side to the intake side, the other from the top down.

10-15 pounds, depending on what else you do.

i didivorced my blown compressor, and did somewhat of a grounding mod. 16 gauge wire, battery->"frame"; alternator->strut tower; intake manifold-> strut tower

i am currently loking in onto everything you are supposed to ground for this mod, but i have noticed a pretty decent difference in driving, both quickness going straight and quickness to the left and right

i can post pics if you need ne more help on this, so let me know

Actually, good CF body panels aren't that much lighter than the very thin sheetmetal we got right now :(

Also, my '04 WRX seems to already have an aluminum hood? It's very light weight, so no need to go CF there.

CF trunk: does it really save weight?

Spare & tools are in storage.
Icon25rs 01-16-2005 06:43 PM

Is the WRX hood lighter than the RS hood? Cause if it is I might have to switch.
AlucardR 01-16-2005 07:27 PM

GC RS hood is heavy..I forget how much, but it's made of steel. I'd like to switch that up, not sure about bumper beams..I mean you're comprimising safety for weight reduction.
Uncle Scotty 01-16-2005 08:13 PM

WRX hood = aluminum with a big hole(for the scoop) cut in it...

RS = steel, no hole...

WRX hood = a LOT lighter than the RS hood.

A) you will never find one for trade :)

B) they dont make WRX hoods in your RS color

keep in consideration guys, when comparing the carbon fiber and wrx hood is prices

WRX- hood+painting
CF- hood

when i wrecked my car, i needed a new hood. another RS hood wouldv cost me $550 after sourcing used and painting.

my current carbon fiber hood cost me $450 plus another 200 to install it and make it look pretty. never go to ABS dynamics.

neways, the stock hood wouldve sone 550. a great quality VIS hood is the same. granted the installation is not included, but why not pay a lil bit more and get carbon fiber over stock?

for the GC/GM, i agree with you... but for wrx owners- the aluminum hood is actually less than four pounds heavier, and you don't have an aftermarket part dragging your resale value down.
Diversion 01-16-2005 10:31 PM

How much does the cruise control components weigh all together? I have a smaller/lightweight wheel on the way and i'm thinking about just ditching the cruise components instead of thinking of a way to retain it.

Diversion 01-16-2005 10:32 PM

Ouch, $200 to install a hood.. me and a friend did the job in 10 minutes for $free.99 ;)
t3hWIT 01-22-2005 04:20 PM

well im a lil ~ when it comes to drilling into carbon fiber. that and the fact that the car was in the shop missing the whole front end cuz of an accident... well i figured id let them do that part as well.

it cost 200$ thoh cuz they have every certificate you can get, guarantee the paint for the life of the car, and overall do an awesome job.
GlobalWaste 01-22-2005 04:33 PM

you could also try losing some weight yourself :P
t3hWIT 01-22-2005 05:23 PM

lol. im 5'8 and 118 lbs. i dunno about you people, but i cant afford to do that.

maybe someone should come out with a thread of the weight of sneaks. then maybe itll branch out into different types of clothing...
